Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well that isn't good, no issues with the 20MB. Maybe it would be a bad idea to upgrade then.

I have had issues all weekend with 20 Meg...disconnections from Steam and high pings.

I did many speed tests from here: http://top10.com/broadband/speedtest/#speedtestID=15567354&products=postcode=WA5+9JG&advanced=1

and here: http://www.speedtest.net/

and here : http://www.pingtest.net/

Downloaded a fair sized file from here: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/pc_update/index.htm

And instead of getting around 19 meg, )can sometimes achieve this ) I was getting 6meg.
:eek::mad::(
http://picasaweb.google.com/110217776149809078048/Pictures?authkey=Gv1sRgCNKUn9SwxseNoQE#

I took screenies throughout the morning and afternoon,...but it didn't improve.

The next hour I spent talking to a idiot in Bangelore which ended up unresolved, so I ordered the 50 Meg Upgrade over the web, free install, but on Sunday morning they had again screwed my connection up, again disconnected from steam and 200 ping and 6 meg connection tested speed

Rang them again, only to be fully disconnected, in error, and I had to phone a different department (down the hall in Bangelore no doubt)..to be reconnected to the service I had been on for the last several years !

So I told them to stuff their poxy 50 meg upgrade and to get there Ar$e into gear and fix my 20 Meg connection....they can't so an engineer is coming out on Saturday...yay, should get sorted then

Funny thing is...whilst I did all my Speed.net testing, if I slected Manchester to be the test server my download speed as around 18-19 Meg...anywhere else in the country or in the world, it went down to 6 or 10 Meg.....why should it differ so drastically from Manchester to Aberdeen to Dublin?

And being an online gamer connecting to servers all over the place, London etc...it is not promising.

PS: If I did a ping test to the netherlands I began to get packet loss too....:(

One final thing....the number the he gave me for Customer retentions doesn't exist.....I guess he felt I would RANT !
How well he read that situation !

Maybe getting the 50MB installed would have been a good idea in your case. I expect you'd get an engineer quicker who'd as part of the upgrade would likely swap the modem and check the line.

Well, Just been on the phone again to VM.

This time to Customer Retentions, guy took one look at my account and said....

"I bet its that old modem...do you have a black NTL 250?"

Erm....yes.

He stated
"those things are coming to the end of their life, they are fine for pootling around on service upto 10Meg, but are starting to struggle on the 20 Meg service...especially during peak times."

To which I asked, are you sure it isn't anything to do with your traffic management?

"no...honestly, it will be your modem"

An Engineer will come on Saturday and install new modem and check everything, further more their top IS Problem fix guy "Mr Ramsbottom" will call me at home next week to go through my PC, settings, and see if he can improve things. yeah...whatever ! :p

I mentioned the VM forums and the bad press the service was getting at the moment, he then gave me his contact details (Email and direct phone number) to see what deal he can cut me for 50 meg service.

Thanks Shaun, but I an not sure I want it...if my 20 Meg will bloody work as it should !;)

Hmmmm....not sure but will reserve judgement.....FOR NOW.

Sounds about right, I remember when they upgraded the 10MB service to 20MB they did a whole modem check, where you could order a new modem if you needed one.

got my install today and wow, love having 6000KB/s at my ready :D, coming form 20mb but the jump is immense. installer was telling me about the 100mb line he is trialling and said it was unreal having that sort of speed available.

also got chatting about the new tivo cable box's, very impressive by the sounds of it, hopefully my sky sub will be up intime to grab one.

My upload has been upgraded but I haven't managed to get over 3.5mb/s out of it from the tests I did last night, will keep an eye on it and reoprt it if it doesn't improve.

Speedtest.Net showing 50.37Mb/s but can only get 1.5mb download through Newsleecher & Giganews Using SSL - Annoying!

Tried port 443 / 563 Using either 20 or 50 Connections still can't get over 1.5mb - Can download from Micrsoft's Eopen at 5.5Mb/s

Ha! I had a small queue of 30gig queued on newsgroups and was downloading at 350k/s. I'm on 50mb.

At the stroke of 00:00..... 5.80mb/s

I'll be making a phone call in the morning. I don't even download that much, this is just a rare occasion.
