Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I didn't want the mess of wires around the skirting boards

Then you'll have to live with the instability and limitations associated with wifi. Virgin said there is nothing they can do to help with your situation because that's the truth. Wifi is inherently subject to all kinds of interference.

For reference, I get 40Mb of my 50Mb over wifi (5Ghz) and that's more than 10ft away. I get less over 2.4Ghz for whatever reason. If you're really unhappy about it though you can try speaking to retentions. I got an upgrade from the original Superhub to the Superhub 2 and then again to the 2ac due to a common fault.

Managed to get full speed now brought a high power usb eithernet adapter.

Anyone using the latest Superhub AC?

Got issues when I set the wireless speed to 1.3Gbps, keeps dropping out, otherwise works fine when set to 600Mbps(albeit slower network transfers).

I've had my new router for about 40 minutes, it has dropped out twice now. I wasn't sure if it was doing some updates. I've got it set to 1.3Gbps. Will see how it goes over the next few days. It is certainly faster than the 500MB powerline it replaced.

Mine drops out copying large files or streaming HD media. However it seems "ok" when set to 600. Annoying as the higher speed is why I wanted the new hub, although the 600 is quicker its not AS quick as it could be.

My pc has an asus 802.11ac wireless card.

I did a test from my HTPC downstairs which is connected by ethernet cable to the upstairs PC via wireless ac and I was getting 25-27 mb/sec. My internet is only 152mb so this is fine, also streaming movies should be okay but transferring large files could be painful. I'll do some more large file tests and see if it drops out.

Hi,

Just thought I'd run a Broadband Quality Monitor to see how it compared to others.

Possibly a noob question, but once created I just use the internet as normal i.e. Gaming, browsing etc?

How long should I run it for, 24 hours or longer?

Thanks in advance.

Run it forever, it doesn't cause any performance issues with your connection as it's only pinging you once a second with a tiny packet.

The BQM's are helpful to get an overview of the connection health, but they don't really tell you everything as connection performance can be poor even with the BQM looking fairly decent.

Does applying for the free 50mb upgrade lock you into another 12 months contact?

I've just had the letter and they are increasing our packaged by £3.99 p/m

It shouldn't do, no.

If you ring up they might try and con you into one, but there is no requirement to take a new contract to get the free speed increase. If you try to haggle the price then they might require you to take a new contract though.

Regarding ongoing Youtube issues.

A user on VM forums said:

Call the phone team reference Ticket Number: F003429494 and ask if it's relevant to you and check out my post history.

I phoned up the support line and quoted that reference. The lady said the engineers are still working on fixing this and that they are working through to middle of January 2015.

Now I quizzed this asking if that meant there's a chance I could be without functional Youtube and other media sites until that time, the answer was that it could be fixed before then but obviously they are working on it.

I've asked for credit to be put into my account in relation to this as it's not fair to be paying for a service I cannot make use of and she promised that a request has been made to the accounts team for the necessary credit to be applied to my account because of loss of quality of service.

I will keep an eye on my account billing area online come the next billing cycle to ensure that this credit has been applied and continues to be applied for however long this issue goes on.

Bloody hell mrk, what on earth could be so wrong on VM's end that they've got engineers working on it for a month to fix YouTube/Video streaming?

All sounds a bit dodgy and comcasty. Will be keeping on eye on my streaming speeds, not had any issues with HD netflix on my end that I'm aware of.

You'd think they would just undo whatever they did at the end of November because the "upgrade" in the area done then was the route cause!

I lose my head with this TiVo box so much.

It's garbage isn't it.

I mean it's got potential. But it's Virgin Media at the end of the day, they probably got one of their apprentices to do it. I was expecting huge improvements with this software update they rolled out but all the kid has done is change the colours.

Navigating the UI - still utter **** and slow.
Iplayer - still broken
Netflix - never works

I cant even believe the development process behind this update. It's like they had a meeting about the millions of complaints about **** & slow UI, netflix, iplayer, and everything, and then just decided "you know what **** all these basic UI problems lets just get one of the apprentices to change the colours."

Joined VM again six months ago. Headline speed brought me but even though I'm in a on congested area, the service is pretty poor at times. Will be glad to go back to FTTC when I move in a week.

I find the ui much quicker after the update to be fair. But stuff like netflix and iplayer is nothing to do with virgin. This tivo update was all about enabling html5 apps - its up to the bbc and nextflix to sort themselves out and release html5 apps.

Yeah, I've found the new UI a lot snappier.

The one thing that really annoys me though is the fact that the channel list resets to the start every time you load it up again. It needs to jump to whatever channel you're on.

It makes browsing and channel surfing a right ball ache
