Can someone enlighten me please. Last i checked we were on 2mb and then got upgraded to 8Mb (just checked router, says 8128 Kbps for downstream).

Im looking at this traffic shaping malarky: M, L & XL - where does 8Mb package fit into that?

When i enter our post code in Virgin's website - says we can get BB and offers either 1Mb or 8Mb - no M, L or XL

Contridicting themselves surely?

Ooopps, made a bit of an idiot of myself there! Thanks again tolien ;) (When did you become a don?)

So all this stuff is for ex ntl/cable people?

Thing is, for an 8Mb package im getting ridiculous speeds since i came back from uni. Half the sites i try from will do <50k sec, some around 70K sec, few times in the hundreds. All my previous holidays back from uni werent this bad!

Yet when i use FlashGet - seems to behave its self a LOT more

:( Testing right now and I'm getting 3mbps if I'm lucky.. something is definitely weird :/

I read on a different forum that sometimes your router can make a difference, think I will try plugging straight into the back of my modem without the router and see..

it can make a difference if it's an older router or has only got a 10mb WAN port.

What's your router?

WRT54GS, a look at the specs shows the wan side is 10/100 so it should be alright :)

Seemingly I can push 1500kbps if I download two or three big files at a time, but I can't find a single file to do it.. even from the MS servers or various mirrors :/

Dudley might come under the banner of Birmingham (which has now been done) or Wolverhampton (which has not). If you're still on 10Mb I suggest you're classed as Wolverhampton by VM.

Got my new modem from VM this morning and got through to their MAC address registration people straight away so only took a couple of minutes to install. Everything seems fine and downloading a Debian DVD iso from ftp.blueyonder.co.uk @ ~2100 kB/sec so I'm happy. :)
