Vista Beta 2 Goes Public Today

Damnit, the download had about 800mb to go and the whole file got replaced with a 15mb ISO for some reason.

Now I have to start it for a third time, damn I hate having such slow internet. 576k sucks.

Craig.

Downloaded it last night. Got major graphics corruption even in safe mode (dual-booted) yet XP is fine. Can't log into Vista at all now and didnt even install any Vista ATi drivers. :(

How do i go about safely removing vista so that i dont get the dual boot option etc with all the windows files? Surely just deleting them would cause major problems? :o

boot from your xp cd. press 'r' at the first screen to access the recovery console. once logged on, run these 2 commands

fixboot
fixmbr

type 'exit' and that will reboot your pc. it will go straight into xp and you can safely delete the vista partition. :)

Ah ok thanks matey. :)

After i reboot, do i just simply remove all the Windows files on the partition/hard drive? (also have some important data so i'm not keen on formatting it) :)

Just a quick update for anyone who's having the same problem I am...

I was trying to download the x64 version using Firefox and the download would terminate at 99% with an error message like this one: -

I just tried downloading it again with the download manager Microsoft recommend and it worked fine. I'm off to install it now. :)

It's asking for an admin password now :(

Well I finally managed to get it working. I have 4 Sata drives installed as 2 x RAID 0 drives, the idea being to leave XP on drive 1 and install Vista on Drive 2. The problem for me was that I had all 4 Drives on my Sil3114 RAID controller and it just didn't like it at all. Eventually I moved all drives to the Nvidia RAID controller and after a bit of fiddling with drivers it worked.

I must say I'm fairly impressed so far, I certainly like the user interface, especially the 'windows key + tab' for switching applications.

If only I could get my Audigy 2 to work I might even try a few games out.

Anyone tried running doom 3 in this? For me it looks kind of weird like everythings lacking shadows and bright, the performance is also pretty bad as well. Obviously its a beta but im wondering if it has proper opengl support and not that layered thing ms were talking about.

yup. it will want the password for the default administrator account you specified during windows xp setup. if you've forgotten it, you should be able to change it with your normal xp account in windows (assuming you have full admin rights). :)

People running x1800 or x1900 radeons might want to be careful btw, i was running hl2 lost coast and noticed the fan wasn't spinning up or down while playing it. Not sure if that means it was staying in 2d mode or went to 3d mode but without the fan adjusting itself.

So who's gonna keep keep using the Beta then, or are you going to go back to your previous OS?

i'm going to stick with it for now. i've had to make a few compromises though....

using foobar 0.83 as 0.9 does not work
no sound in pro evo 5 (bizarre as sound works in other games i've tested: hl2 and gta:sa)
using an old version of daemon tools which only support isos (i've converted my other image files already so no problem there)
don't like ie7. sticking with the 'fox.

that's about it. frame rates in games are no different and the only other stuff i do on my pc is surf/email and listen to music. :)

you have the vista catalyst drivers from ati?

well so far so good, started downloading vista drivers and then we will se how it gets on.

i thought it would be using more system memory, only 844mb used when i have 2 ie7's up, mp11 and 6 tabs in the first. :)

I found why my previous 2 downloads were ghayed up, the download manager screwed it up for me both times.

I have some different things happening, firstly I get no dual boot option it always goes straight to Vista, then after setting it up a bit was having a game of freecell when BSOD then on reboot it loaded XP and no way can I get it to load vista, it's there on the drive I can see it from XP as I could XP from Vista.

No idea why I get no dual boot, I used to have xp64 and xp on dual boot with no probs.

And Vista isn't half slow compared to XP I'm running a Opty X2 @2.8GHz with 2 GB ram but it runs slower than my other machine with a venice @ 2.7GHz with 1 GB of ram.

I don't know whether to reinstall or not I did expect it to have some hiccups but after all the downloading and installing taking 14 hours then I didn't even have it running for a hour before it's dead.

Vista working great, feels finished, well what ive seen on it, obviously it isnt or it wouldnt be beta :o . Dual booting with XP and vista working fine here...

Shame the driver support is a bit crap, one little snagg and thats installing vista drivers for my aging Soundblaster Audigy Player, looks like i cant get them, dang :/

Unless somone else has it working, that can help ?

v. strange. that's one beasty rig you've there.

i only have a dothan @ 2.4ghz, 1gb ram and an x800gto (128mb ddr1). i have all the visual affects on and it's fine for me. can't really tell the difference between this and my xp setup (which is heavily tweaked with services disabled etc).
