Vista Beta 2 Goes Public Today

I'll be installing the 32-bit version using VMWare later this week. Although I do have enough space to install a dedicated version, I'd rather virtualise it.

I've got my version at home running on VMWare... it's been awful for me. Impossible to sort out driver issues etc. My work PC, where I've been able to stick a different HDD in my PC has been great, apart from the sound issues I meantioned earlier in the thread.

I've had CTP1 (legally) running in VMWare for a while, so I'm not expecting any major issues (apart from the fact that CTP1 ran as slow as a dog due to the old hardware that runs my virtual environments).

Finally managed to get the x64 version downloaded. Was having the 13.7 meg file problem up till now, then it just decided to work.

Anyway, mounted it with Daemon Tools and get told "X:\ is not a valid Win32 application".

Obviously I've made some noob mistake but I can't work out what...

Had a play with it for most of the day, not that impressed, a few problems with drivers for my 3Com Gigabit onboard Lan which is causing the occaisional blue screen. When I try and open a file on my other Hard drive, explorer crashes and restarts.
It looks nice but it just feels slow and bloaty compared to XP at the moment.

EDIT

Seems the correct drivers really change the system, I installed another Gigabit network card that Vista had drivers for and the system is now stable and working better, explorer working ok now.

you cant install vista 64bit thru xp as xp is a win32 operating system

you will have to burn the ISO to a dvd and install via dvd/cd boot

Pretty sure you can only run the x64 Vista installer from a WinXP x64. Try booting from the DVD instead, that should work.

EDIT: meh, beaten to it :p

Yup. That was pretty noobish :D

Didn't help though... set to boot from CD and all that, press any key... do so and it just loads XP anyway. Just ignores it like the drive is empty.

Just meant for people who are having a lot of hassle trying to DL Vista. :) It's a good option.
stigggeh - it'll be because it's a large file - infact it's 13.7Mb over the 4Gb limit which is why it's showing as 13.7Mb so as Berserker mentioned earlier (eventhough he nicked his explanation from me and beat me at the maths because he had the figures quicker than me and he's just a meanyyyy) you'll need something which can download large files, and onto an NTFS disk.

Works in Firefox 1.5.04 here - haven't tried anything else (don't have IE6 anyway) - on standard XP home 32bit + NTFS - so I'm not sure what it's playing at - possibly a retarded download manager :)

i will try to grab it off torrent (never used it before either  )

Just wondering, did clearing your browser cache help or was it still being silly?

I'm having the same problem with the 64bit version.
Iv'e tried several different things to download it with, and it's always 13.7Mb.

Cleared temps etc etc and this is onto a NTFS partition. (even tried doing it with Vista x 86 on a different partition)
Thing is, when I open it in IsoBuster it shows...

Somethings getting very confused here as you can see the 3.71gig WIM file (black cross just means it needs a password to open it)

Well this is a little different. I ran 3d mark 2006 in vista at default settings with no overclocks and got a score of 2226 with an Athlon 64 3200+, 3Gb ram 6800Gt. I've just re run it in windows xp and surprisingly got a figure off 1375 with the same hardware... The only score that the vista run didnt beat was the cpu score and that was only a small difference...
