Vista Beta 2 Goes Public Today

Sorry, but this is a quickie, and not found anything specific from searching the thread, though not got a clue what term I should use, anyway:

I'm just getting round to installing this. If I install Vista from XP, over the top of it, is it a complete wipe of the HDD as such? Or is it just an upgrade, keeping all programs etc installed?

Doesn't really matter either way, as I'm due for a reformat anyway, but thanks in advance.

Dave

if you install vista from within xp, then it would (try to :p) upgrade it and keep your programs and settings. as with all previous windows versions, this is not recommended and you would be better off either setting up a dual boot setup (you'll need a spare partition with at least 16gb free space) or burning the iso to dvd and booting from that to perform a clean install. :)

Well, installed it over the top, and the majority of things are running fine. Will do myself a reformat sonnish and do a clean install, as it's definately hogged down by all the rubbish on this installed at the moment.

i have been looking around at why i cannot get the x64 one (13.7mb problem)

word on cable forum says

For those of you trying to download the 64-bit version and getting a download size of 13.7 Mb, the cause is what I beleive to be a fault in NTL's proxy servers. See the following two posts I have made about this issue:

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=469703

The bottom line is, NTL's transparent proxies can't handle a download of this size (greater than about 4 Gb). Doesn't matter what browser or download manager you are using. Since NTL customers are forced to go through the transparent proxies, we are in trouble.

i have tried on all three of my pc's with winXP and both firefox and IE as well as a few download managers. i even asked my mates on NTL to do the same and guess what.......

13.7mb

well microsoft your plan has worked :D

i REALLY like this.....dont know if i can go back. installed on my sn25p and it found every driver except audio. no problems so far (btw this is 32 bit version still cant get x64)

its really nice to use imo

Anyone got any Alcatel frog modem drivers for vista?

lol I cant activate it to get online....

Hmm and theres no X-fi sound Vista drivers :(

Guess can wait till April 07 for Full Vista.....

whenever i try to download the 64 bit version of the file my browser (or download manager) attempts to download a 13 meg iso containing only a readme

ive flushed DNS

CTRL + F5

cleared history and cache

but stil it continues to think the Iso is 13meg

what have i missed ?

Most of the thread?

It's either because you download manager/browser doesn't support files over 4Gb, or your ISP uses transparent proxies (e.g. NTL) that don't support files over 4Gb.

The question you should really be asking yourself is do you really need 64-bit? 32-bit would be most advisable due to higher compatibility at this stage.

how do install x64 vista

hi,

i've played around with Vista x86, so now want to try x64 vists as I have 64 bit AMD processor.

I want to try Far Cry and Half-Life 2 out in the 64-bit environment.

Anyway the question is how do I install x64 vista as I can't do it from inside Windows XP, its gives me error messages "D:\ is not a valid Win32 application"

Thanks in advance

You need to burn the image to a dvd and boot from the disk. :)

Just a reminder:

Microsoft are flicking the switch to "OFF" from today/tomorrow (30th June PST)

So if you're still struggling to download the file, better be quick otherwise you'll have no chance other than a torrent.
