Vista keeps on crashing...

I tryed installing JTF and it came up with a similer error saying that the source was corrupt, and said it could be caused by a corrupt disk, bad download source, or a virus.

And if i think about it I've only just installed MTW 2 on my old computer about 2 months ago.

No its really best you reinstall dx as its missing a lot of dx9 stuff causing problems in games, the problems should only come up when trying to play not install tho. As when i installed vista company of heroes didnt work, snowdog (from here) told me to install dx9.0c as the dx10 direct x has lots of files missing or very old. So i did what he said and it worked.

Also download performance and fix packs, theres a few out there just look for them.

how will install updates/patches for games, if I can't even get them to install in the first place?

and another thing it seems when it installed windows, it didnt install windows media player properly, it says I need to download it because it is corrupted.

All i can say i guess is try to get a new dvdrw drive and perhaps if after vista still corrupt then get a new vista disc or somit.

I mean if u cant even install dx from a game cd like medievil war 2 then its gotta be a drive prob i would think.

I have already tryed with my old IDE DVD drive, which works fine on my old PC, but not on my new one.

and I can't afford a new copy of Vista :(

I'm just gonna ring up Scan and tell em it still isn't working, there phoneline isn't open till monday though.

Btw what does start/controlpanel/admin tools section/event viewer. Then application or system, on the left menu say when u try installing or playing a game or installing new dx9.0c u downloaded etc.

Btw can we get some screenshots of stuff like device manager, event viewer partiton magic to check drive paths (not just the letters used by drives) and can u still not do a dxdiag report (start/run/dxdiag)

Also will you try what the forth poster was getting at in this topic. It may help. As im not sure what u did when u set ** comp up, did u format fully before installing vista, how did u format, did u make a partition if not do so to see if it works.

Does any of ** games install and play, what games have u tryed.

Heres somit off total war forums if its just metw2 problem.

2.3 - CRC errors
Quote:
If receive a Cyclic Redundancy Check error when trying to install Medieval Total War 2

1. First, check to see if there are any scratches, fingerprints, or marks of any kind on the disk surface. Something even as small as a piece of hair or a very light scratch can cause this error. If you find any fingerprints or debris try cleaning the CD with a dry, soft cotton cloth.

2. If you do not find any scratches, fingerprints, or marks of any kind on your CD, try renaming the InstallShield folder located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield, to InstallShieldOld. Start the installation again to reinstall the InstallShield components with the newest version.

3. Close all background tasks

4. If you have any virus protection programs like Norton or McAfee, temporarily disable them by right clicking on the icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the desktop) and selecting "Disable" or "Exit". Also be sure to end all background programs before attempting installation, this is best done after a fresh reboot of the PC.

5. Download the SafeDisk update from the Macrovision website here

If the above does not work, try the following:

6. Make sure that you are logged in as the Administrator (for Windows XP Professional) or Owner (for Windows XP Home). This will usually be the first account that was created once Windows XP was fully installed. If you are not certain, contact the manufacturer of your PC for assistance in finding your Administrator/Owner account.

7. If you have an Administrator account, create a new account with Admin rights:

- Click Start
- Click Control Panel
- Click User Accounts
- Click Create New Account
- Choose account name eg. Games
- Click Next
- Choose Computer Administrator as Account Type
- Click Create

After the account has been created, Log Off via Start and Switch User

Choose the new account eg. Games to log in and install under this account.

8. If the previous steps did not work and you have sufficient hard drive space available, you can try copying the disk files to your hard drive and installing without the disk.

- Create a new folder on the desktop (just right-click on a blank portion of the screen and select New then Folder)
- Name the folder MTW2.
- Double-Click the new MTW2 folder to open it.
- Insert the 1st disk into the DVD-Rom drive and if the auto play starts, cancel it.
- Double-click My Computer to open it.
- Right-click on your DVD-Rom drive and choose Open
- When you see the contents of the disk in the Window, click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Select All
- All the contents of the disk should now be highlighted, click on Edit at the top of the window again and choose Copy
- Click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Paste. This will copy the contents of the disk into the MTW2 folder on your hard drive.
- Follow the steps above to copy the second disk - Once all the files have been copied, remove ALL CDs from any drives.
- Run Setup.exe to install the game

To save disk space, you can delete the MTW2 folder after the installation has completed.

If you cannot copy the CD contents to your hard drive or get the same error message when installing the game on another computer, then there is a possibility of the discs being defective, if you suspect this may be the case, please return the disk to the original retailer for a replacement.

Supose u can go through that list.

yep I did partition and format my drive like described by that 4th post, and I will get a dxdiag report for you, and some screenies of the above, but it will take a while as I'll have to put them on a CD/USB stick then onto this PC, because the internet isn't working on my new one.

I've done the first 4 on that, I'll try the rest of them, and the games which I have tryed are UT3, AOE3, MTW2, JTF, Soldier Front, KwonHo, and none of them work.

Also handy to know, what exactly u have done since vista finished installing on ** hdd. Name each software/driver/version etc. Need to know if ** installing somit u shouldnt u see. Also would be handy to know does games worth when u try to install straight away the second vista had installed wihtout installing drivers (apart from gfx driver perhaps and sound) but only them 2.

RAM!

It definitely sounds like ram!

However, I think ram isn't at fault but a possible incompatibility problem? It had happened to me before...

@ skeeter...

I'll give it a go, and I'll do all of the above to, i'll do it tonight and over tomorow morning probly, then i'll post my findings tomorow, to save keep going backwards and forth with my memory stick, because my two pcs are no where near each other.

thanks again.

could you possibly go into a little more detail please?

yanto.
Ok, a year ago or so, I tried to install XP on a machine, there was a random problem like blue screen of death and even if XP was installed successfully, some file download would turn out corrupted. Tried Memtest on the ram, it passed. I had tried everything but no luck.

In the end, I swapped the ram and the problem disappeared. The first ram was supposed to be compatible with motherboard but somehow it's not.

I was earlier suggesting in this thread that it could be ram but after reading your post, it has to be ram!

Look up memory website for a suitable ram or borrow off your friend.

Exactly but have they installed Vista on it? I doubt it...

I think they may have tested it with Memtest and it passed but who knows?

hmmm.... well ** right, they may not have tested it with vista, but I don't want spend money I havn't really got if it isn't going to help, because if its different ram I won't even be able to use it with my current stick to make up 4GB ram.

the gigabyte site says it is compatible and so did sxxx.

Ok, what you have said earlier in posts give a strong impression that it has to do with the ram.

What brand of ram is it? Just curious to know. It is best to borrow a stick of ram off a friend or maybe local shop if they can lend it to you.
