Vista RC2 Released

does anyone know if vista stores some of the old xp opperating system when you do an upgrade , kind of like xp did, just that looking at freeing up some space in the vista drive and that might be an option but I can't find the option for it in control panel.

Got most things working now, just one last thing and thats Daemon tools.
Had a look on the Daemon website and apparently the new version 4.* whatever works in vista.

I've done an upgrade from xp which when installing told me that Daemon tools wasn't compatible so I uninstalled it and downloaded the new version, now it gets as far as the SCSI screen about SPTD then when I click ok the installer closes thats as far as it's getting.

Anyone else had any look or know a working alternative ??

Cheers

How did you uninstall it? not even that would work for me in rc2

i've managed to get it all working now perfect.

Download the new version of Daemon tools first.
Then go to My Computer > program files > locate your daemon tools folder and delete it as it doesn't show up in programs and features in vista.

now you need to go into Control Panel > user Accounts > Turn User Account Control Off > then untick the option for it.

Now restart your computer.

Now put this code into a .bat file , just call it anything such as test.bat open that up in notepad and copy this code into it.

Code:
@echo off
setlocal
set sptd.sys=%windir%\system32\drivers\sptd.sys

cacls "%sptd.sys%" /G Everyone:F
attrib -r -s -h "%sptd.sys%"
del /f "%sptd.sys%"

sc delete sptd

Once you've saved that bat file run it and confirm anything it asks.

Now reboot the computer again

Now run the installer you downloaded for Daemon tools and it should work this time and ask you to reboot. Do as it asks and reboot etc.

Once you reboot and your happy it's working re-enable that user Account Control.

And that should do it.

Only thing I can't get to work is my sound card (Audigy SE), there doesnt appear to be a driver for it, anyone got any idea's?

for anyone having network issues, vista rc1 and above has trouble comunicatiing with some routers, i have a belkin one (dont laugh) and when hard wired there was nothing i could do to get them to talk properly.

For some reason my wireless adapter does talk to the router ok, but i did some research and on the msdn forum there seems to be a few people with this.

Well RC2 wouldn't seem to upgrade the 7428 (?) issue (post RC1). Came up with a "Windows can't install message box".

So I installed again rather than upgrade. Aero seems OK.

- audigy beta drivers
- office 2005 beta
- bluetooth dongle
- iiyama driver
- radeon 9700 pro
- ASUS P4P800
- AVG 7.5 beta

all work. Haven't tried Visio beta as this "broke" the security centre before.
Had to fool network adaptor with "any old driver" to get online to install proper driver.

not too sure here not getting that problem, might be worth having a play with the power settings in control panel as by default it's set to turn drives, screens and everthing under the sun off after so long.

Spoke too soon - "blue screens" on every shut down and security centre "broke" (now says no antivirus (AVG working) and no Defender (working).

Another thing for those of you with Logitech devices. Mouse/Keyboard software works fine but for webcams, download the latest quickcam software, right click it and set compatibility mode to XP SP2, the software will then install correctly and setup your webcams as normal.
Is this ALL Logitech software or just Setpoint? I have the MX700 desktop combo and the Logitech drivers will not install. Most keyboard functions do work of the bat mind, but I cannot configure my mouse or keyboard at all.

ROFLMAO. Guess what arrived in the post on the same day as the RC2 release.

Official Vista RC1 CDs from Microsoft.

Nice one Microsoft. How about trying to keep up eh? :D

Setpoint should work by default if you have the latest version, it's Vista compliant, works for my G7/G15. You could try the compatibility mode for it though, may make it work :)

When I installed Vista RC2 everthing worked out the box. all drivers for me was installed with it. including aero effects e.t.c just like it should be :D was a great install only took 8 minuits to install too from scratch. Not even raid drivers needed

anyone else got problems with displaying your desktop on a tv as a 2nd screen. Its just black and white, can't get color. tried with vista drivers and the nvidia drivers. x64 version. :(

RC2 x86 downloaded last night, installed Nvidia and Audigy 2 ZS drivers fine.

Firefox 2 working fine

Spybot isnt working (obviously)
Razer Copperhead drivers not working

A lot faster then RC1

Will update more later when i install things.

Right, why can they manage to fix one thing and break others!

5728 and now RC2 work with the vista nVidia raid drivers from booting off the dvd, which is great.

Now since 5728, which I removed and went back to RC1 for, and now still on RC2 there are problems with copying files over my network. It will just come up with the calculating time box and never do anything. Locks up explorer and I have to restart as it also kills the network card meaning MSN logs out and all internet is dead.

I've tried copying a large file, small file, multiple files but all the same. I've also remote desktop'd onto my server and tried to copy the file from on the server from the vista pc and it also locks up.

Bizarre. I would not mind if I stored everything on my main pc, but all my files are stored on my server so I can play with vista on my main pc and not risk anything.
