VM 20 > 30 meg upgrade

yeah that's what I figured. I think the reason I'm still using it instead of upgrading to a gigabit/wireless N based router is because I love the firmware so much. I wish they'd release an up-to-date version on a newer device that had the above :)

Still, I don't mind not having full 30meg on my laptop, I only use it for web browsing so not an issue. As long as I have full 30meg on my desktop and download box i'm happy

There is the Asus RTN16 which can run Tomato :p Although there are other high end routers too but none of them are anywhere close to the price of a WRT54GL but that's expected given how old the WRT is now!

Ooooo I didn't know about the Asus router. almost looks too good to be true?! wireless N, gigabit, USB Support AND tomato firmware?! may need to do some research into that :)

Thanks for the tip there Khaaan!

I have a RT-N16 and its great, solid as a rock.

Does anyone know if I can use my Ambit 256 modem or do I HAVE to use the superhub? Its coming on Friday. Would my internet still work, just not hit max download? I wouldnt mind if I only got 25/1 if I could still use my Ambit just because its easier, smaller and neater.

Well I'm having a few issues, download speeds are great but some sites just won't load until you hard refresh them about 10 times. Will have to investigate more. Maybe the SuperHub isn't playing nice with my Linksys WRT320N.

I think that's VM in general, I had this on my 20MB connection on the old modem sometimes too where some sites would take a while to load or not load, a refresh solved it. This was using Google's DNS,. OpenDNS and VM's DNS although with Google DNS the resolving issue was far less I found.

I've never had this problem until now, maybe I should try Google DNS then. Could be that I was using some other DNS but now I've switched from my old modem to this it has gone back to the virgin one.

I have just called up and cancelled my upgrade, I was told by the sales team I could use my current modem and not have to use the superhub. Going to give retentions a call tomorrow as well.

Sorry I don't follow, you've cancelled your upgrade because they said you can use your current modem?

No, I want to use my current modem and I was told by CS that I could, and that I didnt HAVE to use the superhub, but that I would need to keep it if I wanted 50meg later on.

I want to keep my current router/modem config and dont want the superhub.

What's so special about your current modem? It won't support 50MB+ and the Superhub can be used just as a modem and you use your existing router - This was the crux of the discussion earlier.

I think the main idea is to get as many people as possible onto the SuperHub as they can, which isn't great for many customers who are happy with the setup but want a faster connection. However from a business standpoint it makes good sense.

So have CS changed their tune? When you speak to retentions mention what they said, they will have a record of the call and you could always request the modem they used to give out with the 50MB service. The VMNG300 I think it is, sure it isn't as small as the earlier ones but I'm pretty sure it is smaller than the SuperHub. I think it is good for up to 300MB like the SuperHub.

I was tempted to pick one up second hand but although the SuperHub is bulky, it seems to work alright in the modem role. I just black electrical tape *modded* it and stuck it where my old one was down the back of my desk.

There is nothing wrong with it at all. I just dont want to use it, my current modem fits perfectly in a small gap behind my desk, out of site. I am almost certain the new one would not fit there, so I would have to re-locate the modem as well. Why dont virgin do a Modem and the superhub as an option? Many people like me just want a modem.

Edit; I have been looking at the VMNG300, If its been already registered, can I register it with my account? Or does it have to be new and un used?

The SuperHub is on DOCSIS3, something your old modem is not so either way if you want >20MB then you'll have to upgrade the old modem really.

Got the SuperHub last night. Fitted, activated. Informed line should be working in 10 mins after activation, it didn't. Waited half an hour still nothing. Called up again and activated a second time.

Currently managing 31.61 down, 3.16 up according to Speed test.

Those lights are too bright! will be putting some tape over them this evening.

I wanted just a modem but it really isn't any hassle making the superhub work as just a modem, granted it is a bigger than the ambit 256 (I also had one of these) but cancelling your upgrade because it doesn't fit where your current modem is sounds a bit extreme? Surely you can find somewhere else to put it for the sake of getting faster/potentially more stable internet and a cheaper monthly bill

VM customer service is terrible. The woman I spoke to wanted to charge me £2.60 a month + £30 activation if I were to upgrade to 30mb.

I explained to her that their website stated there is no extra cost to upgrade to 30mb but only £30 for activation. She was having none of it and still insist of charging £2.60 a month. They wouldn't wave the £30 activation fee and I only ungraded to 20mb on the 31/01. I'm going try to again later this afternoon.

The superhub arrived a short time ago. Didn't take more than a few minutes to remove the old cable modem (small thin black one) and put this one in. I replaced the original coaxial cable as well, as it has been there for over ten years and looking a bit worn in places.

Activation took a phone call to confirm the account number and MAC address. It then came online a few minutes later.
