VM 20 > 30 meg upgrade

so using the hack on the first page to disable all of the superhubs features should let me use my current network setup without hassle?

I use a WRT54GL with Tomato on currently and have never had a problem with it. I have everything configured exactly as I need it with port forwarding and dhcp-booting to a linux based pxeboot imaging service, plus wake on lan which I use a fair bit over the internet.

Yes you won't need to change a single thing on your WRT, just do the steps mentioned on the superhub and BAM, everything is back to normal.

well the steps suggest I should set the WRT's IP addy to 192.168.0.10 which will generally mess up my whole network setup as I have static IP's set for certain devices in the 192.168.0.2-10 range. I'm wondering if I can alter the IP of the superhub instead to something else like 192.168.0.100 then just set the DMZ to point to 0.1 which would be my WRT.

I'll have to wait and see :(

No you don't change the IP in the WRT but in the VM SuperHub for the WRT, this is an internal thing that only the SuperHub will see and use. Nothing changes as far as the WRT is concerned. Your connected computers will still route the same as before as they will be connected to teh router as nothing has changed past the SuperHub :)

Once everything is done you can log into the WRT same as before using the same IP as you have always done and you can log into the SuperHub via its IP of 192.168.0.1.

ahh that makes sense, sorry I just re-read the steps and saw it said to plug the WAN port of the WRT into the superhub's LAN ports. For some reason I was thinking of plugging a LAN port of the WRT into the LAN port of the superhub.

No problem then :)

I been reading up about the Superhub, a lot of mixed reactions out there. I think i will test the superhub as it is, if it does out to be rubbish ill go back to my WRT160N and put the hub into "modem only".

The SuperHub is a Netgear Gigabit N router but a very basic one, I don't know what Netgear model it borrows the internals from but not going to be a high end one that's for sure :p

Also the data usage reporting according to the SuperHub is inaccurate, apparently over the last 19hours this is what the hub reports compared to what the actual usage is on the right:

If VM got their numbers from the hub then that would be nice :p

The only trouble using the 'hack' method is that its double nat'ing and this has caused problems for some users and slowdowns.
If you need to upgrade to 30mb now thats the only option you have though if you want to use your own router.

Im holding off as i need WOL etc.

Double NATing? This isn't an issue if you follow the workaround correctly. Remember you're connecting the hub to your router's WAN port, not LAN port. There shouldn't be any such issue. Plus you're disabling any routing aspect of the hub anyway and it's only acting as a modem.

As posted above or more details and same guide here:

http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co...onnect-a-router-to-the-virgin-media-super-hub

Using this method my connection and devices are exactly the same as before and everything is working fine from VOIP phones (Vonage IP) to consoles and digital set-top boxes.

Virgin are wanting to charge a £30 fee to upgrade fom 20 to 30Mb

Your up to 20Mb broadband is fast, but we're writing to let you know about the launch of our new up to 30Mb broadband speed. The good news is that we're offering it to you as a valued up to 20Mb customer first, for a one off fee of just £30, and no extra monthly cost.

..yep?

Surely the upgrades won't be happening any time soon? They still haven't done the upstream upgrades yet, and that must have been going on for almost a year now at this rate.

It is unlikely you NEED a super hub, but the offer from Virgin requires you to take it.

I guess from their point of view they are giving you a free 10MB speed increase in exchange for getting you onto the 100MB capable modem. That way if you decide to take faster speeds, it is easier and cheaper for them to switch you and start discontinuing the older kit.
