VR for Star Wars Squadrons

shouldn't matter, don't start steamvr when you start the game and toggle vr in game

Just tried that - it looks identical. Everything is overly bright and the textures are all blocky, seems really low res.

Edit: HDR was on in VR! Turned that off and things are far, far better! The textures still look quite low res though; GeForce Experience reports than the resolution is set to 1280x720 - that can't be right?

I tried it for myself on the rift S. First tried on my laptop thought it would handle it but it looked and ran like crap. Very blurry like the other guy said and there seemed to be a big issue with motion blur making it even worse.
Went to the main PC and seemed better straight away. Performance no longer a problem. Image quality was much better but still a bit blurry in the background. It seems to me the game is automatically applying some kind of reduced LOD for distanced objects depending on your spec. Anyway after applying 1.4ss the image quality improved a lot to the point I'm more then happy with it. Still getting about 20% headroom. With 1.6 its perfect but it's pushing it for the 5700xt as it starts reprojecting a lot.

Pretty big VR update for this today - stars are fixed and things look a lot crisper. Its okay now for me to play through the campaign.

From the patch notes:

VR
  • Skyboxes now have increased resolution for high-rez VR headsets
  • Added an option for PC players to adjust their VR resolution scaling
    • Players using high resolution headsets (such as the Valve Index) should be able to enjoy higher frame rates without requiring the most powerful GPUs

  • Added an option for PC users to use forward rendering, potentially improving their VR performance
  • The game now uses less intensive forward shading when using the "Low" lighting quality setting in the graphics options, allowing VR to be used on mid-tier and even some lower-tier PCs
  • Fixed an issue where black bars would appear when transitioning out of a PvP match if the player died at the same time.

Sounds pretty promising, nice to see they are still committed to improving the VR experience rather than it just being a tacked on afterthought.

The Reverb delay may have worked in my favour - by the time I actually get it in hand, this game seems it will be a substantially more enjoyable experience than it would have been at launch!

I only got it yesterday and performance is up a lot already with the update. Now it runs on my laptop.
Good news for Reverb2 given how high the resolution is.

Is this a recommended buy then now do you think? Quest getting replaced with G2 on Tuesday, had written this off but perhaps too soon

It looks a lot better now, but I still have issues trying to get a decent framerate on my 1080ti and a Valve Index. GPU is maxed out all the time and it's going into reprojection constantly, even with the detail levels turned down.

When it does work it's a very immersive experience. I prefer the gameplay and flight model of the original X-Wing and Tie fighter games, but the detail levels on the cockpit, ships and environments make this an incredibly immersive experience - if I can get a decent frame-rate!

For context - I have been running on a 3090 with everything ultra 135%SS and 90 fps hitting with very limited reprojection 1-2% (mainly CPU bound by my 7700k). In fact I turned the reprojection off as the 3090 did not seem to like the sudden step change in resource that was being requested - it was making an odd clicking sound every time it would drop to 45 fps:eek:.

We swim in the same circles Keyman. Last night i fired up Squadrons on the G2 with the same settings at the native res, performance doesn't drop off. Of the few games i tried on it, this was the one that made me go wow.

Not everything looks all that much different when you max out on the Index, but anything with sharp detail like the cockpits in Squadrons just looks on another level.

greetings folks, quick question.

I am getting the quest 2, I have i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz (4GHz turbo) 16 g ram and i need to choose between a 1070 or a 1070ti (wondering if theres a significant difference) Anyhow, will i get reasonable settings and FPS with those components ?
Thanks a lot in advance
