VR... wait or invest now?

I loved my Rift and I didn't even play that many games. I only sold it due to space. My PC desk is in a corner with not a lot of space around me so I didn't get the full use out of it. If I had more space I'd definitely get one again. I found once I was in game I didn't notice any 'SDE' at all. You quickly get into the immersion.

You need to think about the games you'll be likely to play as well. If you're a huge FPS or third person action game player and rarely play Space sims like Elite or have no interest in racing games your use may be limited.

I'm a huge FPS fan, I've been playing onward and a bit of pavlov for the last 6-8months with no flat screen use basically at all. If you are going to be serious about playing FPS in VR though you do need a rifle stock of some description or build your own.

I wouldn't be buying a rift or vive at this point though as there are several new headsets on the horizon that look to be a significant upgrade - I have a Pimax 8K-X on order but StarVR also have a teaser image up saying they have some sort of announcement coming next week too.

Loved the Rift but still struggling with the motion sickness, really puts me off using it even though i want to.

Here is what you do to get over the motion sickness. Play games that don't make you sick until you get your VR legs under you. I am presuming that there are some games that don't make you sick? If you get sick no matter what the game, then try using apps like medium and quill. What you are doing is getting your body, eyes, brain etc used to feeling good with the headset on. When you get to the stage where you can comfortably wear the headset for an hour, then it's time to move onto games that make you sick. The trick is, the second you feel nauseous stop, don't push through. IF you push through all you are doing is training your brain to equate VR with feeling sick. So, the moment you start to feel sick, stop, take the headset off and go do something else for a while.

It's a mistake everyone does, try to fight the sick feeling and play on. It doesn't even take that long. It only took me a couple of days until I didn't get motion sickness for the most part. A nod time when a new game or experience comes out I can start to get queasy again, but, I just do the same thing. Stop, go do something else, and come back to the game later.

Just buy a rift and have fun with it. Even the demos are worth the money you pay for the rift. Me and the wife are on it every night since I bought it. I've had a few people round from the pub and the neighbors. It's great fun. Even if you had it for a few weeks you could sell at a £100 loss but for me that would have paid for itself is the fun we had.

TBH I actually prefer the PSVR headset to the Vive, Oculus and WMR ones. The optics are way better quality (Less Screen Door, no God rays) and it's particularly good value now you can buy them for under £250. Also, the ergonomics/build quality of the headset are the best of the current crop. Plus there are quite a few Sony exclusives like WipeOut/FarPoint/etc which are genuinely amazing.

The only real downside of the PSVR setup is that with just the one camera the 6DOF tracking isn't as good as the other VR systems. I still think that for the money it's the best all round experience though.

@aoaaron : Do you have a PS4/Pro or a decent spec gaming PC already?

im trying to trade in my ps4 500gb OG + 250£ atm for a PS4 pro

PSVR over any PCVR? Not a chance, the ps move controllers are terrible, the tracking is awful due to the single ps camera. Room scale, is VR, the sense of presence it gives is amazing, moving around your play space is just brilliant, the PSVR can’t do it anywhere near as good, despite the games flaws, Budget Cuts is a perfect example of VR, I recomend trying it if possible. I’m not a huge fan of the Vive Wands, I would rather use the oculus touch controllers any day, but even the Vive wands are miles ahead of the poor PS4 move controllers.

Wipeout on the PSVR is excellent though.

The WMR headsets can be had pretty cheap (around £200) if you search for refurbished or eBay(new), In the USA they are regularly available for $150ish, might be worth trying to get one and paying for shipping?

Thanks man!

What are the best VR games? I'm shocked how AAA have neglected VR. :(

AAA doesn't really mean much, not to me at least, for the last few years AAA games just means sequel after sequel with flashy graphics. Don’t get me wrong I would love to see some big budget VR games.
As far as the best VR games go, that’s subjective, for me I would say

Bullets and More (low player count)
Pavlov
StandOut
Onward
Echo Arena
Lone Echo
Robo Recall
Beat Saber
Elite Dangerous
Dirt Rally
Skyrim VR
Budget Cuts
Rec Room
SuperHot VR
Brass Tactics

That’s off the top of my head, I haven’t played much VR over the last few weeks purely due to the hot weather we have been having, there some really good VR titles in the works too, A Township Tale (you can get access to the very very early access pre development by joining there discord and asking for a key, along with Star Citizen it’s my most anticipated title) and a couple of Oculus funded titles, Defector and Stormland, Valve have 3 VR unannounced titles in development too.

Despite the ‘walled garden’ dislike towards Oculus, Oculus’s exclusive titles (funded by Oculus) are amongst the best VR games, which is partly the reason I went with the Rift over the Vive and a WMR.

There’s some VR focused websites I like to go on, Oculus’s Reddit site, VRFocus and RoadtoVR, there a good source of information, also YouTube, I like Paradise Decay, FacePa1m and Node, they offer great VR content, particularly FacePa1m

Some people on here will be better qualified to give you a view as to whether you should buy or not. For me I finally got an Oculus Rift on Thursday last week and it's been an amazing experience, I'm finding there are no true games for it but more experiences to play around in which is still amazing and worth the money. I have absolutely no regrets, there are gripes with the system sure but the experience far outweighs this.

I don't feel it's a gimmick and that VR is genuinely going to be the future of gaming but ultimately your next question is likely to be "When do I buy?", as with everything in technology the moment you buy it will immediately be outdated by something newer... with the Rifts pricing whilst expensive at £399 it's not the most ridiculously priced VR experience and is comparable to the Vive in some cases. Nuts to it, buy one and enjoy it!

Only way to tell is to buy.

The response is 50-50 between "great, amazing, life changing" and "meh, not ready, good for 5 mins".

I was a day 1 purchaser and a massive fanboy in the build up. It's now been 1.5 years since I put the Vive on.

It's a mix of many things:

- the need for space
- the giant clunky controllers (not an issue for rift ofc)
- the annoying lead
- the low resolution
- the narrow fov
- no platform-defining games

A lot of that will be fixed in time and I'll get into it then.

Well, the response isn't really 50/50 though. Most people who actually try it like it. The majority of people are still enjoying their headsets.

Need for space: That's not really a fault of the headset though? If that's a problem for you now, it's always going to be a problem.
clunky Controllers: as you say, not a problem with the Rift.
Annoying lead: There are fixes, you can buy the wireless addon for the Vive, or setup a suspended cabling management system, which is what I did.
Low resolution/narrow FOV: Some people just can't get past these things. So I understand you completely. For me, I just get so immersed in a game I don't even notice.
Platform Defining games: Robo Recall? Lone Echo, Echo arena? Beat Saber? elite Dangerous? Project Cars 2? Rec Room? I could go on.

Neither of us have any figures for this but I can say I read just as many people lauding it as dismissing it. Most dismissers (myself included) have had fun with it, but just do not think the experience is worth the hassle at this point in time. I'm glad there are people sticking by it though, since it won't mature otherwise.

All subjective choices.

All subjective choices.

All gaming is subjective, some gamers didn't like any of the Witcher games or Skyrim yet people would class them as platform defining games. I don't even like Lone Echo, Echo Arena or Project cars but I would be fool to deny the impact they have had in VR gaming. I don't know how much more platform defining you can get than those games.

If you got bored of it, fine, happens us all, but to say "no platform defining games" is not really true. I mean if you haven't touched the Vive in over 1.5 years, then you haven't played Robo Recall, Lone Echo, Echo Arena, Moss, Budget Cuts, Beat Saber, Skyrim VR, Star Trek Bridge Crew and so much more. Oh man, you have missed out on so much!! Not to mention all the improvements that have come to other games.
