VR - What are your thoughts?

Nope. In its current incarnation it is far, far too primitive. You can dismiss my opinion if you like, but I don't think you actually need to try it to make a solid judgement about it. I've read articles about it, seen some of the software developed for it, and... I'm just not impressed.

It's far, far too primitive.

Holodeck/Matrix, or don't waste me time :p

I would say you are wrong and it really does need to be tried to form a proper opinion. I read a lot like yourself and my opinion of VR was not good. It only took me 30's to totally change my opinion.

I think it may become a fad for a short while, it might be decent for certain games but not all.

I'm thinking it could be more of a novelty more than anything, at least at first, that is until it becomes fully immersive or matrix like, as someone above said. It's a bit like having a toy robot, very cool for a short time but we all know we'd want it to be fully autonomous with consciousness :p

You're right about that.

But the hype train surrounding it and the startups developing for it are pushing it to replace just about everything.

That's what I find most annoying. There are blatantly places where VR is not going to be of any value whatsoever, but that doesn't stop people pushing VR as the solution to everything.

Like that stupid VR crime scene software they are developing. I for one don't want the police wasting time and money with that sort of thing.

With the crime scene it's a good thing as they will be able to go back and look at the crime scene the way they found it for years to come. I see that as the added benefit. Another is too many people going around a crime scene can destroy evidence.

I totally accept your opinion.. But I do feel you need to somehow test it out to make your own choice on what the experience is like.

I am also on the fence atm about VR they is questions I have that I can only answer once I have a set myself and that kinder puts me off.

My other worry is that lots of new games decide to go first person so they can support VR headsets.
Especially early on while games that support it are limited, makign a game that does is a good way to eek out a few more sales I expect.

You can't really pass proper judgement on something unless you've at least tried it.

For someone who thought that 3D was just a fad this is far different.

It's a game changer. Probably the biggest upgrade to PC gaming since the advent of the GPU.

I don't care, VR is old hat, I had a VR setup around the year 2000, headset complete with motion tracker. The only thing the new gen of VR really offers that the older gen didn't is affordability.

Graphics of older stuff may look rubbish today but it was fine then and that wasn't the problem, not being able to see the keyboard/mouse is the main issue with VR, it pretty much limits you to FPS/driving games (stuff you can play blind) and for stuff like RTS/MMO a regular screen is much better.

The wow factor of my DK2 was only there for a few weeks for me, the best experiences were cockpit games.
I was surprised that other than me, most people were getting sick pretty quickly while using it in anything other than cockpit use even with a steady 75 fps.
I managed to get my money back a few months ago, i may dip in again, but i feel the tech has a long way to go, a lot more FOV and resolution and a lot less bulk needed to tempt me back.

Keen to experience it myself to see what it adds to immersion. Only problem I am worried about is any motion sickness you may get from it. I remember playing Tomb Raider and could not play that for too long because the motion sickness was unbearable.

I'm looking forward to exploration simulators (I like nature from afar, but I hate living things) & surgery training. That should be fun.

Still very early days from what I can tell from seeing so many youtube videos about where the industry is at the moment.
The rift seems the most polished but they still openly admit to having technical challenges coming for VR which they have not solved yet.

Racing games look amazing with it. Being able to look around when fighting for a corner instead of crossing your fingers because they are in your blind spot. Mirrors could actually be useful instead of just a visual to make it seem more real.

Wide spread consumer availability will be a very good first step anyway and it sounds like AMD are on the way to bringing the hardware support to back up the visuals required to give immersion.

Hololens is augmented reality, not virtual reality?

Well you see...

I'm a believer! :D Game changer for me.

As well as the cockpit-type games i can see a whole variety of 1st person style games (not shooters) with very strong stories and ofc because you feel like you are there the epicness and atmosphere is x about 50.

Played on a DK2 for about 2h.

Felt utterly sick..... Nauseous sick that is :P

Excellent fun though. Its still got a couple of years to mature. I hope it doesn't die out through lack of interest.

Mechwarrior type games, any kind of Piloting type games like Elite or Flight sims.....
So good.....

I'm sick of it. Specifically the hype, and constant talk of VR this and VR that.

To me, it's useless. It's like a glorified Wii-mote, only you flail your head around instead of your arms. You still can't go anywhere tho, just look around.

I've seen some ridiculous concepts coming out of it, like a VR headset to help officers "explore" a crime scene. You know, for officers who can't just get up and go the crime scene, and want to stand in one spot whilst looking 360 degrees. Only instead of using their mouse, they'd wear a bulky headset and move their head around. For the lulz.

Everything to do with VR seems to me to be a gimmick, and a pointless one at that. Why so many companies are throwing money at this I have no idea.

Give me a mouse+kb, or controller, plus a normal 2D screen any day.

This has to be coming from someone who hasn't tried VR yet. VR is going to be an absolute smash. I bought the DK2 on May 19th. I sold it on May 26th.

Why?

Because I saw half of one of the 980ti's sitting there that I would want for the CV1. Yes, I can wait 6-9 mths for the CV1, knowing im going to have the absolute best hardware for the experience.

Unless you've tried VR then you really have to concept of the HUGE impact it makes on games, especially seated games ie.. flight sims & racing. You really are 'there'. Seeing is believing. This isn't going to be some 5min splash like 3D was. This is here to stay and will only get better.
