VX220 or S2000 - in 18 months time :p

Had my S2000 6 months now and its a joy to drive most times. I imagine it might be easier to control on the edge with the engine in the front compared to the VXs mid engine.

Don't the 2.2 engines have problems? It is better than the K series engines but if you buy a Toyota powered Elise then it won't keep up. My turbo dooesn't surge all that badly, not compared to previous cars i've driven, but yes it does have lag and needs to be in the right gear for the right speed - ie) no torque whatsoever below 2,000rpm...but then again I don't drive it slowly, so never been bothered about economy.

No, they're pretty much bullet proof. A minor issue with a revised oil jet for the timing chain is the only problem I have ever heard of. The engine should go on for ever really without any problems.

I wasn't that impressed with the Toyota powered Elise in terms of the engine, it has less torque than the VX does. The Toyo engines as I understand it also have some reliability issues.

Dogbreath - Yeah I'm aware it is heavier, how does it compare to the weight of the Toyo engine?

Hes looking at a two seater rear wheel drive convertable and you recommend a DC5?

Hi im looking at buying a Fiesta, how about an icecream cone instead sir?

enough of the attitude mate, no need to be a jerk, read the first post again...

Are they practical as "my only car" kinda car.

Also, what other suggestions do people have? Doesn't have to be a soft top, but I don't want a tank. As you can tell I don't know much about cars

lol the ice cream cone comment just made me giggle.

I was always under the impression that the valves needed replacing on the 2.2 engines? That's why no one bought the 2.2 Astra Coupe and the Turbo was much more popular? Dunno, I just went for outright performance and he Turbo is considerably quicker than the N/A

well yes it has a 1.8na instead of a 2.2na or a 2.2 turbo, i think you would expect it to have less torque...

cant think of any particular reliability problems for the toyota engine at the moment... maybe there was something on early models (im talking 99/00 here) with lift bolts wearing down too quickly. or with a bad cylinder (due tothe oiljets not spraying cy3 properly or something).

the engine doesnt seem to have any inherrant faults otherwise.

the 2zz toyota engine with gearbox weighs very little; i think ~ 115kg...

its a high rever, the power band is 6200-8200.

it can be supercharged, to 220bhp or u can buy a pre supercharged version.

i wouldnt expect the maintinence to be any higher for the lotus than a 220 or s2000.

The 2ZZ compares favourably in terms of weight. Not really a contest though considering its a 1.8 alloy block versus a 2.2 iron block.

The 2ZZ does have a small number of flaws but they are very rare and generally only surface on cars that are used on track frequently without the correct precautions (such as a baffled oil sump) or by over-revving them.

The 2ZZ is similar to the Honda VTEC's in that they have little torque until the revs get past a certain point. It's actually very fun to drive as the rev limit is so high.

That 2.2 GM motor will never get any support because, at the end of the day, it is a 130bhp (?) motor that needed 2.2 litres of displacement to achieve it. And on top of that it weighs a ton. It may be reliable and I'm sure its tunable but given it fails so miserably on the first hurdles it tends to get ignored by the enthusiasts and tuners as an "also ran".

This.

Either car as a first car is liable to kill you. I would seriously not recommend a RWD sportscar to someone as their first car.

I' am 26 and don't drive dangerously. I haven't had a "performance car" before. I had a Renault Clio "99 when I was 18 and at 22 bought my Fiesta ST. It was a huge step up but never nearly killed myself init. I am a sensible kinda chap so should be ok with a RWD car.

hhmmmm that 350Z someone got looks nice :p

if you're looking at the S2000, take a look at the DC5 too, has rear seats, so a bit more practical

Thanks Bledd, never seen one of those before! Looks comparable to a Celica, will have to investigate it! The Integra looks a little sporty without looking to loud, need to be taken seriously at work & avoid the "boy racer" look. Some people at my old workplace commented on my Fiesta ST when I got it :(

Personally I dont think the S2000 is twitchy, I think it is an excuse for people who crash them.

I drive a 2000 model too which is the most severe.

As for car choice, I considered both. I saw the S2000 as a car, the VX220 was just a fancy go kart.

I have to agree with this, the S2000s handling is great, people should try a Rev1 MR2 with cheap tyres if they think the S2000 is twitchy.
