VX220 Turbo's are...

VVT just lets the engine carry on pulling instead of dropping off like it would without VVT, hardly makes the engine suddenly turn into a race engine. Infact that's what it's trying to avoid.
actually you're quite wrong.
VVT/VTEC etc are a means of allowing an engine to not only behave like a race engine, but to be tractable, smooth, reliable and generally mild-mannered when required.
these systems exist to give you the best of both worlds.

He meant race engine as in no power low down and 2500rpm idle i suspect. VVT gives the engine a race cam profile yes and a lovely wide torque curve.... unlike a race engine. As they dont turn it into the forebreathing race engine type of engine and thats its exact purpose.

Yea they take vtec off sometimes when they tune hondas heavily

Yeah in race series. A good race driver doesnt care for sub 5k performance, its never there. But by removing the VTEC you can reduce valvetrain mass and help keep the oil pressure system more stable, perfect for race engine.

Are the VX220's as awkward as Elises to get in? Id never have a elise as id never be able to get in and out comfortably :(

yet simon replied to disagree with me when i mentioned you really have to work them hard to get them to do anything.
check out Will Gill's post RE Honda S2000 and you'll find the same opinion there.

Nigh on identical, if anything slightly more difficult.

Its okay, hes drove my Teg and is a VTEC appreciator, just can take that statement either way. I suspect the term 'race engine' was meant as in 'it only just starts to make decent power output' when of course thats not the case, it just carries the torque curve further into the rev range

I just dont think a silly light 2 seater sports car really needs working hard to get shifting regardless what engine, a simply 1.8NA sufices in an elise, let alone VTEC, VVT or Turbo.

You get used to it. I can almost look cool getting in/out of my S1 Elise now and, supposedly, the S2/VX220 is easier to live with (girls cars).

You get used to it, every owner does, even the "largest" person soon gets used to it.

You havent had metal bit put in your spine and taken out like me :p Ive lost a certain degree of flexibility.

With the roof off, it's just like getting in and out of a bath. You could always get a 'federal' roof with the gullwings on it.

Didn't realise that had ever made production (Last i saw of it was when the S2 was first launched then it was never mentioned again). Will have to have a look next time i'm over that side of the site.

Isn't that accepted though when you want to go fast without the help of FI ? :)

hasn't the 1.8NA in the elise got the VVC instead  ;)

In the S1 you can get the standard 1.8 with 118bhp, the Sport 135 1.8 with 135bhp (actually closer to 145bhp), the 1.8 VVC engine with 143bhp, the Sport 160 1.8 with 160bhp and VHPD 1.8 with 190bhp. That's before you head down the turbo route with ~215bhp from the 1.8.

As far as I know it was a factory option in the US... I'm prepared to be proven wrong however.
