Warhammer 40k book recommendations

Dude that is a harsh spoiler

I agree it doesn't spoil the books knowing what will happen but if I didn't know by now I wouldn't go out of my way to find out now, just enjoy the series.

You are kidding, right? :p

It is no spoiler, it is common and accepted knowledge as the entire game is and has always been set in the 41st milennium,
where the Emperor is a corpse on a throne, and Horus does not exist!

That information is years and years old, forms the foundation for the whole universe, and really is not a spoiler in any real sense. The HH books came long, long after, and are intended as retrospective insight into that common lore. :)

Well it is, I would wager that a lot of people that read the HH books don't (and possibly have never) played the games. It's like revealing a Game of Thrones spoiler in the TV thread from the books.

No, it isn't. This is a Warhammer 40k book thread, not a Horus Heresy book thread, and the HH series came way AFTER Warhammer 40k books that already provided the lore I am talking about. Just because the HH is your first experience of the universe and the way you choose to find out about the series does not mean that it is in any way the normal way to do it, or that the rest of us should not enjoy the universe as its intended to be enjoyed. It really is expected by the authors that you know this information before you start the books, as the whole series is intended only to further expand on existing knowledge, so apologies if you didn't realise that already. :)

It didn't spoil anything for me, I was just messing but it might for others.

All i know for sure is:

Horus and the Emperor have a showdown. Big, huge battle on earth and also come to know that Sanguinus pops his clogs. I read that somewhere by mistake. But I have no idea about which loyal legions make it back to earth and the fates of the Primarchs. I think knowing this would ruin the suspense of the whole saga for me.

Well it's not my first experience of the universe :p

But for the benefit of others it's best not to reveal spoilers, we even have spoiler tags now so you can still discuss things without ruining it for some.

And by your logic it would be fine to post GoT spoilers because the tv shows came way after the books? I think not (in fact people have been suspended for this)

Well, for me that logic doesn't fit. We are talking about existing books already out long before the HH series that already give you that information, and as I said, its expected that you already know the situation with the current universe before you start the HH series, it was only ever intended to expand on previous backstory lore and canon, and nothing else. It can't be a spoiler if it's already been common knowledge in all its publishing for about 15-20 years. The HH books are relatively new, and the whole universe from its very conception started with those two facts set in stone before almost anything else was though of!

Why is it expected? Because you say so? It's a completely different series. No prior knowledge is required (and the way characters are introduced shows this) You only have to look at the sales of HH to realise there are going to be a lot of people reading that haven't been buying the other W40K books.

Well lets agree to disagree because despite what you think, it is expected that you know the basic premise before you read the HH series. It is an expansion and backstory series, and the whole universe has been around for years before they even came out.

However, I will add spoiler tags to stop the outcry, even though they are not technically spoilers. :p

I have just read something that the Black Library are going to start doing, beginning with the Angel Exterminatus Horus Heresy novel.

Basically, all HH novels are going to be released in hardback format (which you have to buy from Black Library, at a higher cost).

The big kick in the teeth is this: if you want the normal, cheaper paperback, then you'll have to wait 3 MONTHS after the release of the hardback version.

I think this is a truly awful thing to do to HH fans, as I'm not bothered about the format, I just want the story, but now it looks like ill be waiting 3 months for the soft backs!

Not happy.

Typical. Anything associated with GW and it gets milked for every penny. I am very annoyed about this.

To be fair it's obvious GW don't give a Todd about the fans, they are just milking a cash cow. The books are puddly as it is and one of them in hardback is laughable! Maybe collections of 3-4 in one hardback but one each?!?! Lol!

Only thing I wouldn't mind them milking is if they re-released rubbish audio books in print format. That I would buy as I hate having gaps in the story but I don't like audio books :p

Buy an Ebook reader, it's worth its weight in gold. ;)

My problem is that I love owning the physical book. It's a nice collection to look at :D

Been there, done that, thought exactly the same. However give it a month and you may never want to buy another physical novel ever again. They are pointless nowadays imo, they take up physical space and resources and are about 5x more awkward to read than an ereader, especially in bed.

And trust me, I thought I would never give them up. Now there's no going back, and the only books I do buy now are reference books that can't be reproduced on ereaders. Not to mention that you can potentially save hundreds of pounds. ;)

I'm sticking with books, over 400 in the house now and no intention of stopping! :D

Thanks, does seem like a money grabbing move, expect nothing less from GW (only have to look at their rip off ebooks.)

I'll still get the paperbacks for half the price they're charging even if it is 3 months later.
