Warhammer 40k book recommendations

Have to agree with a lot of the people in the thread and recommend Dan Abnett's Gaunts Ghosts series, love them.

Other series to look out for are the Space Wolves series (first few are by William King) or the Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchell. Think the Ciaphas Cain series is a lot more fun than the standard noble stuff of the marines as you get to see an imperial guard commissar purely looking out for himself with hilarious consequences :) .

If you want to read more then here is the wiki:

Almost finished Horus Rising, only about 90 pages to go. This is a seriously awesome book, even if you dont like WH40K this book will have you wanting more.

When I bought the Horus Rising I thought it was just going to be some pulpy nonsense, but I was wrong. It really was very good.
Same here.

The disappointments for me being The Dark Angel HH books, and the Battle for the Abyss - which is a shame because I love the Soul Drinkers novels.

Battle for the Abyss was very poor, but The Dark Angels books are some of my favourites of the series. I didn't think much of Descent of Angels first time around, but after I read Fallen Angels, I had to read them both again and enjoyed them more for it.

Horus Heresy False Gods has arrived today cant wait to start reading tonight:D

So the series is 16 books, is that the last one or is still going?

I'm just nearing the end of False Gods and it's pretty epic :) I've recently ordered a kindle and really hope the Black Library crack on with releasing the series as an ebook format.

I have spoken with reliable sources, and the general idea is that the series won't end with the Emperor and Horus showdown, but will go onto describe all the after-effects (Chapters, Guilliman, codex etc).

So in other words, their about a quater of the way through maybe :D

That would be awesome

The after effects have never been explained enough in the 40k fluff, would be great to see that explored as fully as the events leading up to the event have been.

*SPOILER* - well it might be and it might not so just in case.

I haven't read the most recent HH book as I've been working through the Gaunts Ghosts omnibus' but the HH books seem to have passed by the Istvaan V incident. Or have I missed something?

i liked brother of the snake, i hope he writes another book about them
I loved this stand alone book although it seemed to get pretty slated.

This was covered in Galaxy in Flames and Fulgrim.

The series is stunning with about 1/2 weak books in there. The latest - The First Heretic - is one of the best and for me is up there with the first 3 novels which define the series.

I think they're a VERY long way off ever completing them and I read somewhere that several of the authors have said that they'll need at least 3-5 books just for the Battle of Tera!

Here's hoping the series does get that far.

So far 16 but its still going, im only book 2:p But i love it, i read a chapter or 2 before i go bed and i cant wait to see what happens next:D

Now thats cool, 16 books and still going! That's what I've been looking for, a nice long series of books to read :)

Think I'll read a few others before I start on those, maybe these?

Eisenhorn
Angel of Death
Ravenor
Space Wolf

Or should I start with the HH books as someone said earlier that they are set before a lot of the other books?

nah, you don't need to read the HH books first. It's actually quite cool to read the current timeline and see how the existing chapters function, and then discovering later on, when you read the HH books, the origins, history and legends behind the first Legions and the Primarchs.

BTW, those are excellent books, but the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series are awesome.

Currently I'm waiting for the next HH book, Prospero Burns. One week to go for epub version!
