Warhammer Total War Confirmed

Holy crap and God damn it. I just watched some Total War videos on YouTube regarding group movement options, formations and attacking methods and I cannot believe how blindly I have been playing this game. I have been using neanderthal methods of moving troops involving lots of manual clicking with only basic knowledge of how to move larger chunks of armies. I never even used way points and didn't know I could literally draw movement paths ending in attack orders quickly and easily.

I have been massively and unwittingly handicapping myself through my own ignorance and I now realise the tactical options at my disposal. WAAAGHHHHH! :D

Can't you tether your phone for 10 mins to find and download the small mod?

Nope unfortunately :( got roaming cellular data only, its not even enough to get steam to load :(

To be fair I should feel lucky as one of the other guys spent 4 days downloading it and we've all copied it into our steam libraries from him

Playing as Empire, enjoying it a LOT. I'm on about turn 80, conquered maybe half of the empire lands but only just getting stuck in with the Undead. Killed off one of the Vampire factions but now left with Vampire Counts and they are considerably more powerful. Quite often I'm getting my ass handed to me by these guys, they just have an absolute tonne of troops. I thought using cannons might help my armies but nope. Anyone got any tips for battling these guys with Empire? It seems like crossbows are useless against zombies and skeleton warriors btw.

Despite having about 12 settlements in total I can only really support 2 full stack armies - does this sound about right?

Re Vamps, nail the lords ASAP. I found as Dwarves (I know, you are Empire) that the classic artillery/range meat grinder to wear them down then I find my infantry line can easily enough hold out/defeat what's left. Though I don't know if Empire have any ranged as insane as Quarellers :p

Regarding economy I am surprised, as Dwarves despite hardly trading by around turn 70 I had three death stacks in the field and a smaller stack in Karaz a Karak to watch for sneak attacks. As mentioned though it's worth investing early in your tech tree for Tax/income gains and also make sure you build the commerce buildings in your cities.

What you can support depends on your income, so unless you maximise every ounce of income through your buildings and tech tree then your ability to field multiple are will be restricted.

Yeah I've been working to try to maximise income to try to support another stack, not much good right now.

I hone in on their Lords and focus them down. The undead crumbling mechanic does the rest.

Thanks for the tips, looks like I need to focus on the Lord's.

Dwarves just declared war on me, took one of my cities. I sent 2 units of outriders to go duff up a single unit of quarellers on the flank. I got absolutely owned and before I could even run away both units had broken!!!

Yeah Quarrelers don't **** about :p

I wouldn't be hugely shocked if either their damage or weight of fire is tweaked at some point as at the moment both are outstanding and it melts everyone.

What sort of income are folks getting from trade? I'm getting about 179 per turn :/

Looking at my outgoings, army upkeep for two full stacks is just over 6000 per turn.

Ok here is my tip from playing, although I am no expert:

1) Population growth is key. The first building I make either at home or when I take over a new settlement is a population growth building: that means farm or similar. When I capture an entire province, the first commandment I make is the population growth commandment. This simply means you reach higher level settlements as quickly as possible. When your town level is maxed, demolish all of your farm levels to free up a slot as you no longer need population growth.

2) When you have another free slot, build either a mine or tinker where possible. However they do have diminishing returns, especially tinkers, so don't keep levelling them up unless you are loaded later in the game. Trade buildings also help to boost income.

3) I personally always build the Guard Room so I have standing defences and eventually a wall.

4) For the Dwarves tech tree, your first few research areas should be the ones at the top focusing on income and population growth to give you an early income boost. The next ones should be buffing your Dwarf Warriors, Quarrellers and Grudge Throwers, which will turn them into quite frankly scarily effective troops (even more so when veterans) and still cheap to maintain to boot meaning you can have two huge armies of them that have as yet dealt with most things I have thrown at them. I haven't bothered with Longbeards, Thunderers or Cannons.

Using those tactics I seem to have held out ok while generating enough income for two large stacks with cash to spare for building.

It really helped when I restarted the game with those tactics as when you try and do so mid game it's just seems pointless as the damage is already done by then.

Had my best battle ever (which I saved) had 3 smaller armies I was trying to reform to go fight Chaos when Kemmler and a huge Undeas army attacked. They have 2600 against 1700 of mine split across 3 armies.

2 deployed on one side of the map and my smallest army of 500 deployed behind them very close. They attached 2500 against 500 whilst my slow ass dwarfs sprinted (in human terms a slow waddle) across the length of the battlefield to help. My 500 were veteran Longbeards, Quarrelers and a Lord and they held for about 5+ minutes outnumbered 200 or so Longbeards against a full army whilst my Quarrelers peppered them from behind. They didn't only hold they completely gouged them as well only losing 1 unit of Quarrelers. My 1200 turns up and charged them from the rear and for the loss of 300 or so troops I wiped them out killing 3 lords to the man :D

Now on to Archeon!

I know it's early days still, but are there any decent guides out there? Which units to use where etc.

Got my butt kicked as empire, didn't know what I was doing, pretty much declared war on everyone and paid for it.
Starting over as dwarfs now, not had too great a start, by turn 8, I had a massive 20/20 orc army attack my home keep. Outnumbered but I managed to fight him to a close defeat so he run away. :o

Chaos finally showed up last night on turn 69. But i've still not finished off the orcs yet, there is just one province holding out and that should fall tonight.

What is the best way of dealing with the chaos corruption should i be trying to keep it as low as possible or will it level off at some point?

So started 3rd game as Empire, better this time as I have a good idea where to build buildings.

But my god sieges against walled towns. I thought a couple of cannons and a hellstorm would be enough, but the range of guard towers means they can shoot my cannons while I run out of ammo.

How the hell do you take them down quickly? Build an army of pure cannons?

When attacking a town you can;

A) rush the wall with troops and ladders (ladders auto assigned to all siege units) and concurrently try bombing the gate with cannons.
B) build siege engines (you have the option when you first attack) they take a few turns to build but provide you with battering Rams for gates or siege towers for quicker access to the walls.

Option B is probably the better of the two or at least a combo of A & B

You have to rush, you can't hold back, the towers have total range and will smash you. My usual tactic is have 4 siege towers go on the walls and have 2 mortars smashing the troops on the walls. Then have at least 3 ranged units sniping the troops.

Once you've cleared the walls, get your melee troops on the ground level and get the ranged units on the walls to shoot down on the defenders.

Really loving this. So many decisions in this game whereas in previous Total War games the next moves were much more predictable as to where to conquer next and where the next threat would come from.

Currently about turn 110 as Empire. Choas and Orcs are on the move and am allied with most of the Dwarves. Have captured most of the land west and south west. I have the option to get the remaining humans to join me, but am liking having them as a buffer between myself and chaos at the moment.

They really have got this game pretty spot on - Total War is fun again :)
