Warhammer Total War Confirmed

Just installed this, my PC just about copes with this with the settings somewhere between Medium and High. Can anyone recommend any tweaks to settings which will make it run smoother without sacrificing too much graphical detail? Usually in Total War games you can make a big difference by just turning grass detail down, but I think I need some other help with this one.

Also, I think I've messed up! Can someone confirm the criteria for the free dlc? Was/is it free if you purchased the game in the first week? Or did you also have to install the game AND download the dlc in the first week to get it for free?

Ok on about turn 60 on my chaos campaign. Just steam rolling everything with 2 full 20 stack armies with chaos giants, hellfire cannons and chosen. Also helps that kholek is about level 26 and Archaon is lvl 6.

Just finished my Orc campaign on turn 234, simply, wow.

I loved the dwarf campaign but this was completely new, it is just an edge of the seat rollercoaster ride! About half a dozen times I almost lost it as if you are Orcs and you start losing it snowballs, equally though when it goes well and you snowball

Highlight was wiping out the dwarfs with over 10 stacks (5 normal, 5 Waagh) totalling around 21k Orcs, the Vamps tried to get shirty and were dealt with in about 10 turns discounting the Benny Hill-esque chasing of Mannfred as the last lord alive across the Empire :p Chaos got short shrift as well, they mauled me, in the space of 2 turns I fought their 4 death stacks of around 8k with over 18k Orcs and whilst I came out victorious I only had around 5k left :p

It is all about momentum with Orcs, don't defend, accept losses but just come back bigger and meaner and ride the wave :D

I actually feel although I have played a different game despite being the same map, the play style was completely different to Dwarfs. Now I need to choose who to go next...

Amazing game!

I'm kinda tempted to take short campaign victories with most of the races to give them a blast. My empire campaign is.... looking nearly done for a short win (though there's a few units I want to properly test in battle I haven't really gotten into a good fighty stack yet e.g steam tanks). Franz is a bit of a beast in battle though, I made a point of ensuring he gets a good fight pretty much every turn (was lvl 16 by turn 25ish :p ) even getting some cheap anti-rebel fights in when I could have just managed the situation better.
Full HP + armour + blade and most of the next section beefed up and he's generally happy to go toe to toe with a couple of infantry groups and see them off :D I HIGHLY recommend getting a seriously "fighty" lord made (all the first proper row, pick up the special stuff from the top as wanted/needed), they're a lot of fun to watch in a fight (as well as being pretty much "THE" unit to have in reserve).

Undecided if I'm going orcs or vamps next (but I suspect orcs as they're sounding kind fun and I like the idea of a proper fighty warboss) :D
Agreed with No1newts though, this isn't the... most beardy, deeply strategic TW game but it's rather "fun" and accessible if you aren't after bucket and buckets of depth and more than holding my attention at the moment :D.

I had that in my Orc campaign with Grimgor, he would just destroy everything, was a joy to behold :D

Him with the terror causing mask and a Giant counter charging where I was weak in the line was almost instant turnaround :p

Don't get me wrong they have toned it down a bit but I think it is the playstyle of Orcs that is ridiculous (in a good way :D) as opposed to game limitations that made my last game completely bonkers.

My Dwarf campaigin was a lot more measured and tactical similar to past TW games, Orcs though, not happening :D

What's the best way to kill enemy heroes as a dwarf?

I've got some damn goblin killing all my lords and the assassination chance from my thane and engineer are quite pathetic, are rune priests better at killing heroes?

It's not broken, I've been through two campaigns and in the dwarf one you just need to be aware that assassination isn't your strength. Instead just focus on wiping the beggars out or alternatively be levelling your hero from the very start so they come online and are useful when it does kick off.

You basically want to get a hero.... pretty deep into enemy territory early on, make sure he's doing something pretty much every turn and you'll have something that can wreck army stacks and/or deal with enemy agents quite easily.
This TW rewards aggressive play (think all do to a point but it's especially present here).

They shouldn't be in the game imo. They make no sense in the Warhammer world. A goblin walking around assassinating Dwarf lords? Please.

I feel the same. Not happy with the hero mechanic ; I think some balancing is required. I would prefer it if they couldn't wander around the map alone, and had to be embedded in an army. Or, if allowed to exist on the map by themselves, at least allow them to be attacked by armies.

ps. One other thing that annoys me is forever "chasing" armies around the map. So annoying having, say, an orc army attacking a holding, razing it to the ground, then marching away all in one turn. Poor dwarves just don't have long enough legs to ever catch them ! ( unless you wait in ambush, or strike it lucky by intercepting them in the underground ). Apart from that, best Total War game for a long time :D Just needs some re-balancing, in my opinion. Nothing beyond repair.

Sorry guys it's a long thread and stuff changes... I always get strung and buy TW games on release and didn't for this one... verdicts? Worth a play? Are there any real annoying bugs that are kind of game breaking like on previous iterations?

Thanks

It's not such a long thread that you can't read the last five pages. Stop being lazy.

Something I havn't quite worked out, how are ranged units affected when they have to fire at an enemy unit engaged in melee combat?
They seem to shoot slower, but do they do damage to the friendly unit?

There's a mod linked in the last few pages that stops the benny hill run arounds.
As the dwarves if you go into the underground stance as well you can often out range any orcs.
