Wayne Rooney: Has he lived up to the hype

Poor George Best and Ryan Giggs. :(

Ah but they did it against the best club teams in Europe which is a higher standard of football, every player in these matches are internationals but are are more organised than National teams as they train and play together day in day out. And those two really did shine in Europe.

Dubbed "world class" by Paul Merson but Its only Belarus, if he can do the same against Brazil or Italy in the World Cup Tournament then we can all confirm he has lived up to the hype.

He did it in the Euro's and was carrying injuries in the last WC so obviously wasn't on top form

I have no doubt Rooney can do it on the biggest of stages

To be fair to the lad, he's looked sharp the last 3 or so weeks, long may it continue. If he can get his 100th goal against Everton, he'd love that. I'm sure the Evertonians would love that too. :D

Has done ok in the last few weeks, he usually ends up getting an injury when he is in good form, kind of like RvP...

So five years later i will ask the same question again, did Rooney ever turn into a world class player...Is he world class.... Yes over the years he has had his world class moments, and had a 2 or 3 good season but I stand by what i said back in 2008, he's generally far to inconsistent to be world class and he's most definitely has not turned into the player the media hyped him to be as a an 18 year old.

I really cannot understand why people defend him so much as a player.

Also since i started this thread he's now on £250k per week, similar wages to Ronaldo and Messi, its just ridiculous, he's not even in the same league as them two. Waiting for the die hard United fans to defend him now ;-)

I'm sure there's been another more recent thread on this subject?

Anyway I doubt too many United supporters will be quick to jump to his defence anymore so your bait might be sat there a while ;)

And just like 5 years ago the answer is the same, he is still one of Uniteds most important players, I still think he is one of the best players at United, not the best striker, but certainly one of the best players (which statistically he was last season, despite what people think)

I think he was dreadfully mismanaged last season, and I'm very firmly of the opinion that the rift between Rooney and Ferguson is one of the reasons why Fergie has....... Retired.

Personally I don't think he has.

He is a good player and has been turned into a great team player, but SAF forcing him to be a great team player has stunted his own personal development. The player we saw burst onto the scene was potentially world class and truly terrified teams, now? He's decent, can score, will do a job but he just looks pedestrian (whether enforced or his own unhappiness)

I would live to see the dynamic Rooney running at players again and given a free role to express himself. In making him a great team player SAF (IMO) destroyed his world class potential.

Anyone that would take Rooney over Ronaldo is a deluded England fan who think england players are somehow better. I can't for the life of me see how Rooney does more for the team,

Or a United fan that watches them both week in week out

I normally leave you to your little rants but you're talking utter **** there

still think he was talking utter ****e? :D

For six months in 2011 Rooney was the best player in the world for me but since then he has been just very good. I agree that I think United have held him back. A move to a free attacking midfield role would have suited him perfectly but I think the time for that has passed.

A resounding no. As I said in another thread would people prefer a 18 year old Rooney, or a 28 year old Rooney?

Has he ever been world class? Debatable, I don't think he has though. I think he has been very very good premier league player and a good european level player, but world class? No.

There's always been a good 10 strikers I would have had in ahead of him if I had to knock together a squad of worlds best.

I agree with parts of this and other parts we cant (from the outside) know for sure whether it was the chicken or the egg

He IS a good player, and occasionally a great one (but these days are getting few and far between imo), not suggesting world class - but a potential Utd Captain material, and this is what has let him down imo.

On his day he can be unplayable, and really lifts the whole team. However more often than not, he shows little effort to get in the game. Even so, after all everyone has "off days", even when he is playing badly he gets moody and affects those around him rather than trying to urge them on and this is the greater sin.

Now has he been "mis-managed" or is his fluctuating weight etc why he is in and out of the team constantly (this is the chichen and egg part) - I don't think the general public know enough to quantify this personally.

It is a great pity however that so much potential has never quite worked out (even if Utd are unlikely to lose out how ever this finishes from what he cost 9 years ago)
