Hi guys,

My 500GB WD5000AKS drives arrived today. Just to let you know that none of them have 4-pin Molex power connectors so you have to use SATA power connectors with these puppies.

Jack

wish i had saw your post sooner. Got mine today and have to go back and order a sata power adapter now. Probably cost about £5 to ship to NI!

Im after a 500Gb external drive, was looking at the MyBook ones, but would this drive put inside something like an icyBox perform better?

As Slackworth said above, the drives in the MyBooks are the same model as the retail drive on OCUK. Performance will depend on the interface used - Firewire 800 will give you the best (only on the MyBook Pro), USB 2.0 the slowest (expect ~20MBps read/write) and Firewire 400 marginally better than USB.

an icy box would work out cheaper, but are they as reliable with 500GB drives, read a few stories of them and drives within packing in ?
might be wrong place to ask but can i daisy chain icy box's like i could with mybooks or is it only possible with the expensive icy box's ?

Got my drive plugged into my IcyBox now, just cloning my other drive before I swap them round. Seems nice and quiet so far, I'll report back when I get it into my computer :)

did yours come with jumpers?

I got one from a competitor a week before the OCUK sale and it's "Out of Region" á la Canada. No warranty for me, sigh.

Teach me not to wander when buying PC components. :D

You'll need to create and format at least one partition on the drive before it will show in My Computer. Go to Disk Management - right click on My Computer and pick Manage, then pick Disk Management from the left hand pane and the snap in will open in the right. Your new drive will appear as a chunk of unallocated space, right click in this and pick New Partition, check the presented defaults are OK, tick the Quick Format box and hit OK. Once the format is complete (30s or so for a quick one) the drive will be assigned a new letter and will appear in My Computer.

I have two installs of my OS on separate drives. My OS install on my Samsung drive, hasnt got all the drivers installed, keeps complaining of two unknown devices (the hard drives have been installed) but there's two others that still arent.

I've installed the SATA and Raid bits from Abit's motherboard CD and still nothing.

I loaded the OS up on my Raptor drive and its worked fine

Also my burst speeds have gone up a fair amount (60mb/sec plus) but I've only moved the connectors to the SATA 3 and 4 connections. They where in SATA 5 and 6.

Is there something I'm missing here or is there something wrong??
