*** Weekend Football - 14th / 15th ***

Here's a thought for those considering commenting on this incident in future.
Try substituting the name of the team that got shafted from 'Ireland' to lets say 'Arsenal' ;)

I'll even suggest a few comments you can try like;
Stop whingeing
Cry babies
Man up
Move on
Should've taken your chances
Swings and roundabouts

Let it rip :D

Is there a more serious thing in football as failing to qualify for the biggest tournament in the world? Made worse by the fact that they were cheated out of it by one person's actions.

Of course there is seeing as I'm not sure why anyone who is English cares anyway. Unless there are people still bitter over Maradona.

There have been so many high profile instances of cheating or completely terrible refereeing decisions over the last ten years, I'm not sure why anyone is shocked by this.

Sorry off topic, but when is Avatar being released? :D

18th December ;)

those diary entries are pretty amusing

I really feel for Ireland, they played very well indeed - however thats football, what the ref/ linesman doesnt see doesnt count simple as

Ireland can hold their heads up high and be proud - France will hopefully be found out in the first group stage and be out very quickly (if they go onto win it - can you imagine the palava that would cause!!!)

Ireland deserve the place without doubt - but they where never going to get the replay (even though thats the logical thing to happen)

Breaking news on SSN from Fifa saying there will NOT be a replay.

I don't think anyone was realistically expecting a replay in fairness, but it's kind of amusing they're quoting the rules as the reason why (Even though Henry broke the 'rules' to help win the game).

They also didn't seem to have a problem changing the way the play offs were drawn at the last minute?

The way I look at it is this. If England were in Frances position and were heading to the play offs, would've Fifa/Uefa introduced seeds? Not a chance in hell.

Another prime example of Blatter and Platini being a complete pair of *****

I love this, Eduardo dives, world almost ends. People are shook to the core. Ashley Young dives twice one night later, who cares.

Henry handles the ball, football is a shambles and he's a disgrace. I can't wait for an English player to obviously cheat this weekend and NOTHING get said about it (it will happen)

The double standards of English people are the thing that makes me sick

Everyone else (i.e. the English) will have forgotten by then and the only people who will care won't be in the tournament anyway.

Also, I have to agree with the above. Are all the people saying that Ireland deserve to go through crazy, both teams were as terrible as each other and neither deserved to go through really, at least France have some good players though who should be at the world cup for the sake of football, so on that alone I'm glad it was France

Indeed and what makes me laugh is people in here making such a big deal about it....Also laughable is the irish politicians getting involved as well ie the Irish justice minister...demanding a replay.

But Roy Keane on SSN made a few very good points about this whole thing and for the first time i have to agree with him

Its done and over with...FIFA are not replaying the game as much as everyone including myself would like that to happen. It would be a legal nightmare and logistical nightmare plus it would set a dangerous precedent that other teams/nations as they can now ask for matches to be replayed if they dont like something etc...and exactly when are they going to replay this match??

But remember what goes around comes around so just wait till France get royally ****ed by some small football nation in the WC then sit back and laugh heartily...i know i will.

I will admit that as much as i love Henry as a player and a person...im very disappointed in him for allowing it to happen...he should have said to the ref that he handled the ball but then as i have said and others have said it wasnt down to him to do that as no other player would have done so if they were in that situation...this is something that will taint the rest of his career like Maradona but unlike Maradona, who scored a goal with his hand he then went on a blistering run that shredded the English defence back in the '86 WC to score the second...Maradona was a brilliant player who made things happen...Henry never turns up for any of the big games whether it be for his country or whatever team hes playing for.

EDIT: Just having saw the youtube video in Gooner14s earlier post...hmmm what was i saying just above??..oh yes what comes goes around...looks like the Irish have also cheated as well:o

I doubt France will win a game anyway, doubt Ireland would have either, it's not the point I guess but at least the Irish can feel good when they see this awful, awful French team get dominated and finally they'll get rid of the worst manager in professional football

What goes around comes around, why weren't the Irish players surrounding the ref and telling him it wasn't a penalty? Truly terrible sportsmen.

Thats true enough

Not really, they were outplayed in the first game. The match ought to have gone to penalties really. Cheating aside, it was pretty even across 2 legs.

result of first match is irrelevant if you ask me - the French only scored once and thats how the result stands.

I agree with the second leg resulting in penaties - no question at all (however it would have been interesting to see how well the French did against Given in that instance as they may well not have scored more than 2 or 3)

I don't know... ye English really have a dislike for the french!

The idea of a replay is nonsense. What the football world should be focusing on is getting means in place from stopping it happening again.

Instead of replaying the game why not just ban France from the tournament, and then carry out a lotto style draw to replace them.

Oh wait FIFA wouldn't do that... ;)

Can't wait for Platini, Blatter and co. to die/retire so we can improve the game without their ridiculous reservations
