Weekend Football 21/22 & 23rd ***SPOILERS***

Well Congrats Man U, the league is yours (unless you throw it away)

We just aren't good enough, too many average players in the squad that fold when a challenge comes across :o

Next time I hear Benitez say "quality" about our squad, I'm going to smash my head through the nearest window.

God, I was actually willing City to get a point in the end. I feel dirty!

And The house of scouse is not going to catch United the way they're going. They're going on about the match at Old Trafford but they can't win the league there, though they can certainly lose it. Liverpool have 12 games left. They'll probably need to win all 12 and it's just not going to happen.

Even if we did, we need you lot to lose 2 games. We ****ed it up just after the new year, just cant ****ing win at ahome.

Our passing was awful today as was our finishing which has been woeful all season. Without Alonso we have no rhythm to our passing and without Gerrard we have no drive and determination.

We've got some world class players and a good squad but it's the likes of Lucas, Dossena and Babel that bring our level down. Sadly we haven't got the players to cope with injuries and suspensions and that ultimately comes down to poor signings by Rafa.

Uniteds title now.

If Liverpool are ever in with a shout of winning the PL come February/March they'll romp it as they always finish the season really strongly, oh hang on....
Up until this season our best runs have always come in the second half of the season. Now that we need a run like that it's not happening :(

but we also have at least two more matches (Carling Cup Final and FA CU1/4) to play than you do, so Im not convinced we arent going to get more injuries before the end of the season

as long as you have Reina and torres and Gerrard you usually do ok - and Gerrard is due back for Wednesday

Its not over until the fat lady sings - of course it was a blow today only getting a point , but it doesnt make you down and out, until Chelsea drop more points they are still in it also (more likely to drop them than Liverpool are imo)

Dont ever think that now - Utd have to go away to Newcastle, have City and West Ham and boro and Arsenal all to play, and not one of those will be an easy game for Utd no matter what form we have going into the match (or form they have for that matter)

No way is it over yet - but IF Utd can win at Newcastle and then beat pool at OT in the next league game - that will be a huge step towards the title no matter what result Liverpool get in the intervening games (they should have played one more by then due to Carling Cup final next weekend, they could be a point behind us before stepping onto OT - even with games in hand its still that close....ooppsss sorry my maths failed me there, but if Utd drop points against Newcastle it could be pretty close by that time

Its a nice thought, but it smacks of more mathematical theory rather than reality. The kind of talk which TV channels throw out in order to keep people watching the matches.

Time will tell of course, by the end of the season we will know whether or not Utd drop enough points, but if I was being totally honest about it and keeping my feet firmly on the ground, then I would say its over. Any team other than utd at the top, in the form they are currently in, with the options they have for covering injured players and I might agree.

But utd , with their squad and current form, at the top, 7 points clear and it saddens me to say that its my belief that its over. Whether that belief will be proved right or not we shall soon know.

I think Rafa has had a lot to contend with behind the scenes, the in fighting has not helped. Nor has publically criticising the owners and Parry every chance he gets. He went overboard at the beginning of January, and on a weekly basis talks about Man Utd with the word 'fact' in the same sentence. In some ways he shares some traits with Ferguson, that 'everyone against us' mentality and being loyal to players who just don't regularly cut it in the first team. That said, the absolute worst thing Liverpool could do would be to sack him, he's obviously never going to walk out. He's not that type of man. I don't just think he has bottled it, but the players have too. They don't have a winning mentality, and no matter how hard Gerrard tries to carry them over that line, it won't happen until the rest of them truly believe they can win the league. Carragher was in the studio for the Man Utd - Chelsea game, 'we're just happy to still be in it'. Enough said. If Liverpool's most passionate player is just happy to be there near the top of the league, rather than believing they can win it, what hope do the rest of the players have. The players have let Rafa down, and Rafa is letting down Liverpool in the way he has been conducting himself in the media.

What are you talking about?

Why have we got West Ham again do we have to beat them 3 times in the league or something?

I've highlighted some serious flaws in your logic there!;) I'm not saying it's all sewn up already but With our form at current I honestly can't see many points being dropped before May.

Whereas I can't see Liverpool winning 4 games on the bounce, let alone the 12 they'll probably require.

It'll continue to happen until Rafa gets sacked and the Amercians bring in their own yes man or we get new owners. If Rafa goes, any chance of Liverpool winning anything goes with him.

I've said before but the best short-term scenario is for Hicks to get full control :(

Saying that, i don't think any of the off-field stuff is having an effect on what is happening on the pitch. Our squad simply isn't as good as Utd's and the 2 players we rely on the most have been picking up constant injuries. Even during our decent start to the season we weren't really playing well, we were just doing enough to get by and that wasn't going to last.

Today's match summed up the last month or 2 perfectly. I lost count of the amount of times the ball was bouncing around in City's 6 yard box and we couldn't put it in, then Bellamy's goal (De Jong looked offside too) taking a massive deflection and then Dunne's save from Benayoun when it looked as if he was just going to head it in.

sorry was thinking we hadnt played them twice for some reason

Newcastle are the only team to come to OT and get a point - until we play them away (and win) it will remain a tough game , however badly Utd played on the first day of the season :)

boro always seem to nick a point off us somehow - so many close games between us two, as though they only ever turn up for Utd games. City may be **** at the moment but a derby is a derby after all

Linoge is spot on - there is a lot of mentality that is not happening at Liverpool, the odd game you are up for and have resounding wins (like Newcastle away for example), but a lot of the "slog" matches that arent easy there is no belief

I dont really care if my theory is wrong, I would prefer to think of the race as not done until the finishing line is crossed, Utd are still capable of relaxing too early and not getting expected points - its happened before and it will happen again, its also games like Spurs away before Xmas, we should have won that game (Im not saying we deserved it) but given everything we should have won it (being the game just before we went away to Japan) but we lost two points - that could easily happen again anywhere

I think it's the opposite, you need a manager with balls to win the English top flight as managerial weaknesses definitely rub off on players and Benitez just doesn't seem hard enough when things get tough.
If you look at who's taken their teams to the title over the years they've all been the sort of leader who players would go to war for whereas, whether you like it or not, Benitez crumbles in public when he plays mindgames and that can't have a reassuring effect on his team.:)

Which hasn't been helped by all the in fighting at our club. The owners looking to replace him, Parry over ruling him on player purchases and the media seemingly begging for his head.

he does have a bit of a history of airing grievances with his bosses in public though. you put it out there and of course the media are going to seize on it.

Can't believe how crap some of the players were for Liverpool today. When a great ex-Liverpool player is reduced to laughing at the performance of our midfield something is seriously wrong. I've tried to support Lucas all season but at best he is painfully out of form and at worst, simply can't cut it in the EPL.

As for resting players because of Madrid, the quality of the players on the bench clearly shows the relative lack of quality and depth in the squad. We have four or five top-drawer players in Reina, Skeletor, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard and Torres but the rest of the squad is too old or simpy not good enough. How do players justfiy the offensive salaries when they can't even control a ball or simply pass it to one of their colleagues.

Really peed off.
