Weekend Football 21/22 & 23rd ***SPOILERS***

The only reason Liverpool have been in with a shout of winning the league this season is because Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal all started really badly while Liverpool won games we had no right to win. As the others have hit form we have been exposed as having no strength in depth of the squad and average players in the first XI apart from Torres and Gerrard.

I have only seen them play anything like champions should play once this season and that was against an inept Newcastle side.

The blame for poor form doesn't sit with Benitez and his rant or whatever people want to think. It sits firmly with the underperforming players or players who are not good enough be in a Liverpool shirt and the lack of financial backing. Liverpool buy one 30m player a year other clubs buy three. That's the difference at the top.

Getting shut of Rafa wont fix it. Get shut of the owners and bring in some financial muscle to get rid of the dross on display today.

I think it's the opposite, you need a manager with balls to win the English top flight as managerial weaknesses definitely rub off on players and Benitez just doesn't seem hard enough when things get tough.
I said that because the Americans will bring in their own yes man if Benitez goes. They've already admitted they were after Klinsmann because of his corporate ties and saw him as a way of making money rather than his ability as a manager. They want someone to make them financially successful and don't seem that interested in making Liverpool successful.

Rafael touched Pedersons shoulder, no he didnt pull him down, Rafael would have to impede Pederson in some way, what he did was give him enough contact to try and buy a penalty by throwing himself to the floor, what Pederson did was feel the contact and throw himself on the floor, rather than taking the shot.
And that is the be all and end all of it.

Every pundit in the country has said its a penalty, most fans in the country say its a penalty and even a fair few people in this thread have said its a penalty. It seems the only people who don't think its a penalty are United fans, which I suppose it understandable. The simple fact is that Rafael made minimal contact and put Pedersen off balance and we know for a fact that if it had been the other way around or if Pedersen had been a Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea player it would have been a straight pen.

Yes, Ronaldo dived, and yes he got booked.

And Pedersen didn't. Surely he has to if its not a penalty?

you can cry and whine as much as you want about it

Thanks for reminding me why I rarely post in these threads. The lack of civility from some United fans is astonishing and if you can't be bothered to discuss the game without being petty I can't be bothered to humour you any more than I already have.

The difference is we buy these players and get the best out of them. We buy Berbatov and he improves our already quality team. You buy Keane and Benitez doesn't know how to use him.

Pool wont win the league its utd's already. They can play badly and still win and they have too much depth even with a big name missing they can still win games pool struggle in this respect.

1658: "Without Alonso, without Gerrard and with Torres still only looking about 80% fit, you're looking for match-winners, and you can't see anyone. Liverpool brought on El Zhar, and yesterday, Man United brought on Carlos Tevez. That's the difference between the best and second best teams in this division."
BBC Radio 5 Live's Mark Lawrenson

^^ Sums it up :P

1719: "I have a source on the Liverpool board of directors. A meeting is being held tonight in regards to Benitez's future. It is very likely Rafa is going to get sacked and Frank Rijkaard will be his replacement. Sorry to spoil the fun but the Roy Keane rumour is absolute rubbish!"

^^ Interesting :o

How come you're not half as good going forward this season if Berbatov has improved your side

Its your defending that's got you top of the league not your attacking. Berbatov has added nothing to your side imo.

he's bedding in absolutely fine after a slow start. we got the better end of the deal out of the keane berbatov pairing.

Keane was a flop, no doubt about it but in what way has Berbatov improved your side?

You're scoring less than you did with Tevez and Rooney up front last season.

given us another attacking option and scored vital goals in our run of successes which has overturned your lead.

how many supporters where saying Berba HADNT improved our squad though - it was Fergie giving the new guy time to settle (and getting the surrounding players accustomed to his style of play)

Keane was in and out every other week unless Torres or Gerrard where injured, and even dropped in the middle of a scoring run - pure scapegoat imo

but we are also wwinning more matches - because we have a different style of player able to change games - rather than two similar players

I don't think you are a better side than the one you had last year. I think in reality your no closer to winning the league than last year. United have taken a long while to get going and even now they are no where near as good as last year. Arsenal are poo and chelsea are imploding.

Decent evidence of how far the standards have slipped at the top this year is everton. They had a good awful start to the season yet are sitting in 6th not too far off arsenal.

Yeah it hurts that you don't have as much money as the others but tbh just about every single game on here liverpool have the supporters are venting fury at his selections and subs.

He's had plenty of money over the years to prove he's worth backing in the transfer market and if I was an owner I'd not give him 20 million 3 times in a year either.

I must say he result surprised me today at Anfield. Is it over ?? far from it but you got to say that the games that could potentially shape the future of the Premiership are few and far between so the potential for Liverpool to gain ground is fast diminishing. If Liverpool fail to gain anything more than an absolute convincing win at Old Trafford by a healthy goal margin next month then it is over for another year.

As an outsider looking in at Liverpool the buck firmly stops with Benitez. Not with the players because bar a few stand out players, he has bought players who simply aren't upto the standard required either for Liverpool or for potential champions. Between Bellamy, Kuyt, Crouch and Keane, the argument that the money to buy quality simply doesn't wash any more. Bar Utd and Chelsea, I would think there are at least 18 other clubs who would like to have had the supposed financial restrictions Benitez has had to supposedly endure

His famous 'calculated' and 'educated' rant is becoming more Keeganesque by the day. Of course you can't believe 90% of what is written in the red tops but even if some of the reports are true he must have turned down at least 3 new and improved contract offers. What's his next condition for signing a contract, Knowledge into who REALLY shot JFK, Peace in the Middle East ?????

BaZ has it spot on when he says that the two players you rely on the most to pull you out of the brown stuff have been picking up injuries. Again doesn't the responsibility stop with Rafa as he can't get along with players with a decent Premiership Pedigree and get them to perform in a Liverpool shirt!!! lets get some perspective here as well. This would have been a fantastic opportunity for Liverpool to win the league given that this has been one of the poorest Prem's on record !!!!

There is no strength or quality in depth and no plan B!!!
