Weekend Football *Spoilers* inc Carling Cup Final 28/2 - 1/3

No, Ferguson became manager in 1986, and it didnt lift the title until 1993, 7 years after his reign began (and 26 years after Utd last won the title)

As I said before you posted - harsh to count the first partial season as Fergie had no control over the first three months of the 86 season :)

Its also questionable how many present Liverpool players are worthy of winning the league at this time - 5 or 6 at a pinch, most are either too inexperienced or not worthy of the space in the squad , and Liverpool have very few decent subs

of the outfield players - Carragher at a pinch, Alonso, Masch, Gerrard, and Torres and a few of the kids - maybe add to that a few lucky subs (Kuyt has gained you points and CL games you hardly deserved - but seems to be widely derided lol)

The squad as a whole needs a huge amount of money spending on it before it lasts another 2 -3 months until the crux of the season

I agree you can never say never, but I really don't see Benitez having such a long reign at Liverpool unfortunately. With club ownership and fan expectations being so high, managers are under more pressure than previous generations. Ferguson's retirement will signal the end of such reigns. I hope I'm wrong though.

True, but then again, to be pedantic, some people who are saying it arent saying that Benitez wont win the league *with Liverpool* but Benitez wont win the league. So that would be with anyone not necessarily Liverpool :)

I'm hoping now that Benitez finally comes out and says the title is gone, instead of pretending that it will still be won this year. At least that way we can put this season behind us and begin thinking about next year.

Liverpool :D :D :D

My Team = the mighty Sheffield Wednesday gave a brilliant performance away to Burnley and won 2-4 :) double over them and continueing our brilliant form against them :)

Don't think they've beaten us since 2000, Leon Clarke && Tudgay strike again ;)

Up the OWLS

Very rare does a top manager walk out on a TOP side in the EPL and join another top side straight away (ie as his next job - allowing for garden leave)

If Benitez doesnt do it with Liverpool the chances of him winning the EPL at all is drastically reduced

A UK born manager would be more likely to hang around - but still unlikely to get a really top job

I cant see Benitez sticking around in England if he walks out/gets kicked out of Liverpool

Also true, but he is comparatively young yet, its entirely feasible that he might return to a leading english team in 10/15/20 years time and lead them to the title.

unless he has had a stonking success in the intervening years - you are really hopiing for a miracle (after all he is approaching 50, being born in 1960)

Yes its possible - I wouldnt say "entirely feasable" though by any stretch of the imagination :)

If its "possible", then it must also be "feasible" (given that feasible means capable of happening), so in effect you are agreeing with me :)

EDIT : or to put it another way, would you agree with the statement "Benitez will never win the league". Given that is with any team, ever, at any time. I mean would you actually stick money on that statement, again given that nobody would have thought that Blackburn would win the league and that all it would take is particular situational events to happen and the league title could be won (debatable whether or not it would be due to the manager or to other happenings, but nevertheless won. Oh, and not "might never win" or "most likely never win" but "will never win", the difference between might and will not needing explanation obviously)

He wont win EPL for a LONG time at Liverpool (unless Arabs come in and he buys a whole new team and squad in one summer) and he wont win it anywhere else:)

Thanks Gilly - will have nightmares now about Benitez getting the Man Utd job after Fergie

(the reaction Fergie has given about Liverpool trying to buy Heinze, I think its a very safe bet Benitez will NEVER end up at OT lol)

Anyone else seen AW's interview? I think he's realised today that we won't be in the CL come next season, there's no way Villa will drop that many points. The **** has well and truly hit the fan today!
