Weekend Football *Spoilers* inc Carling Cup Final 28/2 - 1/3

No, Loki waffles on a lot when it comes to Benitez. He used to go on about how he had no track record of winning titles let alone breaking the dominance of a couple of sides like Fergie had done in Scotland when he took Aberdeen to the title ahead of Celtic and Rangers.

Are the Liverpool fans on the forums for or against Rafa ?

Because there can not be many managers who could come in, and take the club further.
I think Rafa is going to stay, and probably sign a fairly lengthy contract, He's good in cup competitions, and as long as Rafa is in charge, Liverpool will be a threat in the Champions League.

Rafa's made some poor buys in the transfer market, and has spent a lot of money, maybe a summer clear out would do the club good, get rid of all the dead wood and there is fair amount of deadwood at Liverpool in my opinion, and build a new team.

He's also made a lot of great buys too and missed out on some incredible players through no fault of his own. People go on about the amount of money he's spent but that's down to a high turn around of players because we couldn't afford to go out and buy a Torres, for example, straight away. We had to raise money by gradually improving our squad and making money on the players coming in and out of the club. It's down to Benitez's transfer dealings that we're now able to buy the odd £20m player.

Benitez certainly has his flaws but a lot of the **** he gets is unjustified. He's taken a side that was finishing 30+ points of the top of the table and competing for nothing more than the FA + League cup and going backwards to a team that is now considerably closer to the top of the league and have been consistenlty one of the top sides in Europe (we're actually ranked number 1 in the UEFA standings iinm), and has done that with far fewer resourses (not to mention a poorer side to begin with) than 2 of the 3 sides we're meant to compete with.

Ultimately if he can't continue to progress any further than we have then he'll have to go but that won't mean he'd have done a bad job. He's done far more for this club than any manager since the King left and i still believe there's more to come but the real test is now; he's closed the gap so far but he's now got to take the final step and if he is given the control he wants (and i expect he will) i think we can take that step.

not if he keeps playing his whipping boy Lucas, the worlds worst left back dossena and Ngog the no show.

ur in a bad situation considering at one point u were running clear at the top. but bam 2 of ur players have injury spells and ur flopping around like a fish out of water. why on earth sell keane when hes the only proven premier league forward in Liverpool when torres is injured. if i was a liverpool fan i wouldn't care if u lost money atleast you'd be able to compete in competitions and premier league games. the teams a mess with absolutly no strength in depth.

starting 11: Reina, Carragher, skrtel, arbeloa, aurelio, Mascherano, alonso, kuyt, reira, gerrard and torres. ur problems lies in the fact u have 1 player on the bench who has a possibility of changing games for you and thats benayoun because the rest of the squad are terrible. and the starting 11 are regulely misfiring.

in the summer the only thing benitez can do is get rid of the entire bench and go spend some big cash on players that can actually cover for the usual 11.

He doesn't keep playing Lucas, Dossena and N'gog though. And considering how terrible our squad is, we're not doing too bad then.

I agree that our squad lacks depth in attacking areas and that's something we need to work on this summer. It's something we should have dealt with last summer but the main attacking player we signed flopped massively (who knows who was responsible for signing him though). The likes of Lucas, Dossena and probably Babel (which is a shame because he's got the talent to make it) should be on their way out and with the money from the Keane sale, hopefully we'll be able to bring in some more quality.

BTW i don't agree with you about selling Keane. He'd performed terribly and it was clear Rafa didn't fancy him. He was unlikely to play much (and based on his performances, he wouldn't have done much for us either) and him staying would have just caused even more unwanted speculation and distraction from what's happening on the pitch.

It takes a special kind of manager to engineer a what? 14 point turnaround from league leaders to third place in the space of two months.

Strange we have not seen Gerrard and Carragher with anymore "we are here on merit" quotes recently.

It makes me chuckle a bit to think that IF we win the league and equal the 18 league titles, it will come in a season that has seen Liverpool capitulate

:D

He's not done bad really, they are a top four club and to be fair he has won the champions league, now thats not to be sniffed at, plus Liverpool are always in the latter stages of the competiton every year also.
Granted he doesn't seem to grasp the premiership though, seems his tactics are wrong for it.
As a Villa fan I am pleased about that, because if we pick up our form again 3rd is possible.
Hope we get Liverpool on a bad day like boro did.

Not having a go but who do you think is a good manager then? It seems most Man U fans think Ferguson is the only decent manager in the world. :p

I respect Maureen, but wouldnt want him at Man Utd - ONeil I would take in a flash (and would have a few years ago before the AV appointment when Fergie first mentioned stepping down)

Moyes I like as well, although whether he could handle a huge club like Man Utd is questionable

Bruce I think has done pretty well nearly everywhere, and with little to no budget compared to others around.

I think there are few managers in Europe who could manage an EPL title to success (or even compete until March/April) quickly (I mean look at the dire effect of Ramos, and yet the same guy is a success in Spain)

He might not be in the top cream of the crop of managers but he has won La Liga twice, the Uefa cup, the champions league, an fa cup, been the premiership manager of the month on multiple occassions and been the UEFA manager of the year twice. Thats hardly the track record of someone who is a charlatan.
.
To be fair Grant can compare favourably to a fair percentage of that list, and he did that in 7 months or so - yet he was only ever going to be temp appointment

No arguement Rafa won a CL final that he shouldnt have and probably lost one he should have won - but I think Ramos doing as well as he has instantly after failing at Spurs so dismally, quite clearly shows the differences required between La Liga and EPL

Loads of other managers I like but just cant see them being able to handle a big team straight off

I guess I am not really for or against him, I think its undoubted that he has improved us in the last few years, but the question now is whether he can take us that last few steps. If he can, fine. If not then he needs replacing.

Irregardless of that, its still a record that hardly makes the man a stooge, charlatan or imposter.
