Weekend Football Thread - 15/8 to 17/8 *spoilers*

You have the best strike partnership in the world :/

Just not today.

Lets see if the refusal to give the pool soft pens and non existent fouls constantly around the oppositions 18 yard box in the last 5 mins of every match extends past this one match.

We were woeful in attack, Torres was barely offered a chance in the whole match. The worst thing though was the sheer lack of quality on the bench to come on and change things.

Credit to Spurs for scoring 2 good goals, they were far better than us today.

:D:D

"Man Utd and Chelski get easy starts  we get a hard start to the season :("

Only if thats the way you want to read it merely for the sake of starting an argument. Which wouldnt surprise me to be honest. Or are you disagreeing that Tottenham away would be considered tougher (not necessarily hard, but tougher) than home to Birmingham or Hull?

That just absolutely blew.

Gerrard and Torres are far far too deep now that Xabi's left; Torres wasn't playing on the shoulder at all, which is where he has been brilliant for the last 2 years.

We need to play Yossi week in week out now, as he seems to be our only player with a clue about creativity. We also need to seriously look at trying to sign Sniejder, although I can't see that happening.

A couple of little plusses were Insua, Yossi, and Voronin. Voronin managed to get in behind more in the last 15 minutes that Torres did all match; his movement is very good, it's just a shame that he's not the sharpest otherwise. Insua gets better every match, and Benayoun is just class.

No, nothing I just knew that it could crop up at some point, Liverpool having a "tougher/harder" start then Manchester United / Chelsea.

Thought Liverpool were very poor first half, much better second, but Spurs bossed the game :)

Torres lacked service, Babel was very poor, he's not improved much.

We were shocking, completely undercooked, and to be fair we came up against a commited Spurs team, King and Palacios are class, as is Modric.

Im still not conviced of the likes of Ekottu and Lennon, but the rst of the team does look good I must admit, keep King fit and you are a eshewin for 6th.

Us, well im not worried, sure everyone will be ready to slit their wrists, and blame everyone under the sun, but we were shocking in last seasons opener and the season before that.Rafa definetly needs a rethink upfront, the porn star didnt look too bad when he came on, Lucas didnt have too bad a game either.Early days.

So nothing actually wrong with my statement then..thats what I figured.

Nope, just nice to see you getting your excuses in nice and early :p

Babel, always looked like he could be come something special, he's quick and has decent feet, just hasn't improved enough. He's not very good from what I've seen of him.

However, Lucas is a far better player, and has improved a lot and still gets abuse

Ive had an amusing thought - that might be the last time Chelsea lead the Premiership this season (if Stoke keep or improve their 2-0 lead) :D

(I know its unlikely but it made me laugh anyway)

I've had an amusing thought too, at least Chelsea have been top of the league this season whereas Man.U. and Liverpool haven't (not even alphabetically) therefore they're better than both those teams on current form, just as pointless a thought which made me laugh, probably.

We were an utter shambles and as other have said babel is just useless, Benayoun is in my view far better player and should have started hopefully he will start our next game and the rest.

Not read any of the comments so far but I thought we were very lucky not to concede 4. Not got any complaints about either of Spurs two goals, one was a cracking strike and the other a very good header. What I have got to complain about is the amount of stupid fouls we gave away and that's what cost us imo.

Reina: 9 - Kept us in the game
Insua: 8 - Excellent
Johnson: 7 - Good debut
Carragher: 5 - Poor. Looked short of fitness and match practice
Skrtel: 5 - See above
Mascherano: 5 - Woefully off form
Lucas: 4 - Terrible. Looked good during pre season because players weren't pressing him. Bit of pressure today and he fell to pieces time and time again. Not good enough full stop
Babel: 0 - Anonymous. Not a footballer. Yossi did more in 1 minute than Babel did the entire time he was on the pitch.
Gerrard: 6 - Not the worst player on the pitch but didn't do nearly enough when he had the ball
Kuyt: 5 - Poor
Torres: 4 - Constantly tried to take players on by himself and usually fell flat on his face. Needs to find his form quick!

Them ratings do pretty much seem accurate, I just hope this player we have in for Alonso is good and can adapt quick i cant honestly see lucas doing anywere near as good for a season.

And what the hell was Carragher thinking jumping into the ball that skrtel had covered madness
