Weekend Football Thread - 15/8 to 17/8 *spoilers*

Would agree with this. I also thought we lacked width at times.

Babel on the left, who cuts in on his right doesn't help matters. Kuyt doesn't have the pace to penetrate so it was left to an unsupported Insua and Johnson, who looked pretty good going forward.

Disappointed with the result but hopefully it'll be the kick up the backside that we clearly needed, based on the first 45 minutes.

I only caught glimpses of your match as I have been slaving it for most of the day in the kitchen.

I noticed that Benayoun kept drifting in from the left but Insua didn't use the space that he had created.

What had happened to Skrtel and Carragher ?

I generally agree with those ratings, Reina was definately my man of the match.

I give Skrtel and Carragher a little lee-way, probably not easy to be a defender when you have 12 staples in your head.

Mascherano constantly looked as if he was about to punch someone in the face.

But Babel...get shot of him asap I say. What is it, 15 days of the transfer window left...get rid and get a replacement immediately. I really just dont see what he brings to the team, as I've said before his "game" can be summed up simply as "run, run some more, run some more, get tackled". He seems to play in his own little world where its 11 Babels on the pitch.

Carragher head butted Skrtel and lived to tell the tale

Simply a lack of communication between two players that have hardly had any minutes on the pitch together during pre season together.

I don't pay too much attention to results in pre-season but the lack of game time for the majority of our first 11 seriously showed today. We were underprepared and for the first 60 minutes we were all over the place.

I thought you rating for Lucas was a bit harsh too. In hindsight, we'd have been far better off playing Gerrard alongside Lucas and playing Yossi off of Torres. Masch looked way off the pace for the first hour.

cmon you spurs!!

Great result for the White Hart Lane faithfull.

Reina had a good game and prevented a few more going in. I was surprised at Liverpools lack of teeth going forward to be honest. Torres was dissapointing as was Gerrard.

But then again, im glad we took the 3 points.

Ah Benitez makes me laugh "we will try to play better football if we can" that should say we will play better football their should be no if,the players can play better

Rafa said:
"It's too early but I think we need to improve. The second half was positive so we will try to do the same things in the next game and try to play better football if we can."

Why can he not just come out an slate all the crap performers today, give them a public humiliation and let them know you can't do that sort of thing in a Liverpool shirt. Absolutely terrible performances from a good few players today whilst most of the others looked like they couldn't be arsed and need a good bit of humiliation.

I don't think he did nearly enough to stamp his authority on the game and he frequently gave away possession when pressurised. Also played a few hospital passes which we could've done without.

I think he'll become a fantastic player over time but in the Spanish or Italian league. His game's just not suited to the Premiership imo. He's got the creativity to be a hit in our league just not the composure.

Edit: Very disappointed Ayala came on ahead of Kelly given how good one was and the other wasn't during pre season.

Name me one manager that does that and has a successful team.

Phil Brown tried it, and his team went on a losing run. Go figure.

No Brown put them on the pitch like children, I'm saying Rafa needs to stop saying things like "we will try to play better football" and tell the team publicly that it wasn't good enough and they need to improve drastically.

Gomes - 6 - Was 100% fine until he gave away the pen foolishly and then seemed to lack confidence.

Corluka - 7 - Did all that was asked of him. No big mistakes. No nonsense.

Bassong - 8 - Great header for the goal and looked solid in defence

King - 6 - Was lacking match fitness...obviously. Did well but is showing what not training can do.

Assou Ekotto - 7
- Superb strike for the goal but almost gave away a pen and got turned several times. Great going forward.

Lennon - 6
- The pace is enough to give any defender nightmares. IF the final ball was there, he'd be amazing.

Huddlestone - 7 - Put in some great tackles in midfield, helping us control the game in the 1st half.

Palacios - 9 - My MOTM. Tackles like a beast, passes intelligently and went close twice.

Modric - 8 - Played a more static position than his normal free role but linked up very well with BAE and got the assist.

Keane - 7 - The work ethic was most certainly there. The finishing, was not.

Defoe - 6 - Dissapointing if I'm honest. Was anonymous in the 1st half and only started to come alive in the last 20 mins when Liverpool were chasing the equaliser.

Subs:

Crouch - 6 - A fairly decent debut. Shot on target and was mostly involved with build up play.

O'Hara - 7 - Good sub. Was there to chase down every ball. Did his job well.

Pavlyuchenko - 5 - No time to do anything.

Some players are frustrating to watch; see Walcott for example but i don't think i've seen Babel have one good game for Liverpool.

United were pretty awful as well today, Nani tries his best to put himself in the most awful positions to receive passes; he comes infield and just blocks up everything.

What he says to the press and what he says behind closed doors will no doubt be completely different. I for one have had enough of our troubles being aired in public and I don't want Rafa to continue that trend by humiliating the team after only one game of the season.

I've had an amusing thought too, at least Chelsea have been top of the league this season whereas Man.U. and Liverpool haven't (not even alphabetically) therefore they're better than both those teams on current form, just as pointless a thought which made me laugh, probably.

I so look forward to more of your sarcasm this season
