Weekend Football Thread - 15/8 to 17/8 *spoilers*

Voronin was absolute poo worst player on the pitch imo, we weren't able to attack, Lucas and Babel didn't play that well. And Torres didn't really have the support he needed to get going, gerrard had to play a more defensive role today.

Not the start I was hoping for

Thought Voronin did more after he came on than Torres did all match to be honest, and I doubt I'll say that often.

That's the best I've seen Lucas play in a competitive match, and if he keeps improving I'm perfectly happy to see Rafa give him occasional opportunities.

Babel did nothing, but by all accounts had a reasonable pre-season, and it's not as though the rest of the team played out of their skins today. Babel has one last chance in my book.

I don't think he did nearly enough to stamp his authority on the game and he frequently gave away possession when pressurised. Also played a few hospital passes which we could've done without.

I think he'll become a fantastic player over time but in the Spanish or Italian league. His game's just not suited to the Premiership imo. He's got the creativity to be a hit in our league just not the composure.

Edit: Very disappointed Ayala came on ahead of Kelly given how good one was and the other wasn't during pre season.

Whether he's going to have a long-term future with us is for another day but imo he had a steady game today, far steadier than Masch anyway.

Agree about Ayala-Kelly, although it wasn't a suprise considering Kelly had mainly played RB in pre-season.

What a great atmosphere at White Hart Lane today. Even when Liverpool equalised, the Spurs fans really got behind the team.

Really over the moon to see Spurs win without Woodgate or Jenas fit. Palacios has been a superb signing. He didn't put a foot wrong today.

What a bunch of cheats Liverpool are though. I've never seen so many professional fouls.

I would have loved Palacios at United :/

I said at the time when we were linked with him and Valencia that he was exactly what we needed.

He picks up too many yellows is my only gripe.

Oh come on, he only averages one a game. :p

Speaking of yellow cards, Liverpool really were a bunch of cheats today. I've never seen a team commit so many professional fouls. How they ended with 11 men, I'll never know.

I've seen much worse, I suppose many on here have as well.

Liverpool made some bad tackles, but weren't particularly dirty or anything today, just out played and the few yellows they got were out of frustration, not been dirty players.

?

Professional fouls have always been a part of the game. If you make one in the middle of the pitch you get a yellow card. If you stop a goalscoring opportunity you get a red. Players know what they're doing, and I don't see much wrong with it. They get suitably punished.

Cool, I'm sure I won't disappoint you and I so look forward to more of your pointless anti Chelsea posts this season, game on;)

Anti Chelsea - hmmm - base something on more than one post would be a good step forward

Everthing I have said in serious posts have stated that Chelsea will be the main contenders

but of course that doesnt matter - idle banter obviously matters more to you

Not read any of the comments so far but I thought we were very lucky not to concede 4. Not got any complaints about either of Spurs two goals, one was a cracking strike and the other a very good header. What I have got to complain about is the amount of stupid fouls we gave away and that's what cost us imo.

Reina: 9 - Kept us in the game
Insua: 8 - Excellent
Johnson: 7 - Good debut
Carragher: 5 - Poor. Looked short of fitness and match practice
Skrtel: 5 - See above
Mascherano: 5 - Woefully off form
Lucas: 4 - Terrible. Looked good during pre season because players weren't pressing him. Bit of pressure today and he fell to pieces time and time again. Not good enough full stop
Babel: 0 - Anonymous. Not a footballer. Yossi did more in 1 minute than Babel did the entire time he was on the pitch.
Gerrard: 6 - Not the worst player on the pitch but didn't do nearly enough when he had the ball
Kuyt: 5 - Poor
Torres: 4 - Constantly tried to take players on by himself and usually fell flat on his face. Needs to find his form quick!
Pretty much agree with that. Out of all the players today I thought Insua looked to be the most focused and determined and was quality when he got going forward. Everyone else, bar Yossi when he came on, looked crap.

I'll stick with my initial assessment that this was a poor first weekend of the season, great result at the Lane mind you. Didn't think Spurs were particularly great but Liverpool were so poor they didn't need to be.

Our game bored me to tears, absolutely no urgency in our play, no pace/tempo either but I guess when you're playing a team that will be fighting for their lives for survival for much of the season it's to be expected that they'll come to do 10 man behind the ball job - just a shame when it takes away from the initial excitement of it being the first game of the season. Just thankful that Rooney got the goal when he did otherwise we probably wouldn't of made the break through.

2 yellows = 1 red. There were plenty of occasions where the ref could have given a yellow but didn't.

The referee lost control of the game and was going mad with the cards. There were several offences committed by both teams which weren't dealt with consistently.

Woeful attacking performance today at times and a prime example of why we need to go back into the market before the window ends. Thought Ayala did well when he came on and Johnson looked good, which I suppose was a positive edge.
