Weekend Football Thread. Internationals. *spoilers* 4-6

Italy 2 - 0 Georgia FT

Convenient 2 x Kaladze own goals in the second half. Would love to see the 2 goals for myself.

edit:

I have and there is no chance the second was intentional. The first looks like a standard poor header.

Good result for NI in the end.

Yeah we could have won it, but we're still 3 points clear of Ploand.

Does goal difference count or is it performances against the team you're level on points with?

Yeah it would go to goal difference, then goals scored and if it continued on I think it would maybe end up on the result between the two teams. Not completely sure on that one though.

Good result, should have been a great one though. Disappointed we didn't get all 3 points. :)

LOL, how jammy was that?

First of all there should have been a card for Green and freekick on the edge of the box for that deliberate handball. Then Rooney hacks down their centrehalf, resulting in him getting injured, conceding a penalty and getting booked for his trouble.

I'm not going to comment on Defoe's deflected goal because at the end of the day that's part of football, you take a shot and sometimes that happens. Just a bit ridiculous how many decisions we got in the first half.

I fell asleep through parts of the England game :o (had a headache so the rest was welcomed)

I'm now just sitting down to watch all the South American football Sky Sports have to offer :D

Looking forward to the Argentina v Brazil game ! Paraguay V Bolivia should be good 'n all :)

England were pretty "meh". I don't know why Heskey gets near the first team, I don't really understand why a team full of "World Class" footballers look so bloody poor against opposition like that.

Still no clue why we were given a penalty. Few players looked good or half decent, on the whole England as per are massively over rated, and I'm looking forward to the game that matters, with mixed emotions.

Couldn't really care less if we win against Croatia, frankly we need to start that same team and get spanked to teach Capello a lesson about how to pick a team, IE form and good players, rather than ask McClown who he would have picked.

We'll qualify, we'll probably breeze the group stage of the world cup, and we'll be embarassingly poor when we get knocked out when we play the first CURRENTLY decent team we come up against. Same old same old, nothing has changed in the way we underperform, choose the squad, waste friendlies, ignore real quality in overlooked players, force multiple players to play roles they aren't good at and force big names into the team and squad, when they shouldn't be there. Nothings changed and I don't see any difference from before Sven's reign frankly. 8 years now of completely lame, underperforming, no formation or tactical awareness, no discipline, cheating crap.

Maybe 2018 + rioting outside rival teams hotels all night long will give us a real shot.

I actually kind of agree :o

I don't think we will "breeze" past the group stage, but I agree when we come up against a good team, and will probably been shown up.

Agree, underperforming, and the squad really hasn't changed much, I still think the manager is trying to keep the "big names" happy and the media. Sven got slaughtered in the media, and as result the FA gave in and he lost his job. England are still over looking talented younger players in selection.

We need to bring in fresh blood, and freshen the team up, too many players are playing without any real competition for their place, Capello isn't all that, he's a good manager but I often don't like his selection. (Beckham, James) I don't really think he's bought anything new to the England team either.

We need a defensive midfielder, I'm so bored of people insisting Barry is one, for the past two years, Petrov, O'Neill, Barry himself have all said he's not the defensive midfielder there. Petrov, or Sidwell have been the defensive player at Villa for some time, Barrys not very good at it, he used to be a leftback and left winger, he was never overly defensive, he's useless there for England as shown by the constant mistakes he makes defensively when we've lost with him playing. I think against stronger teams his strength and better defensively than most wingers(not least Walcott, Lennon, SWP, Downing, etc, etc), is a good option on the left. He's got a killer cross, has played the left side effectively loads of times. But against less good teams and weak defensive teams a better out and out winger like Young is the best option. Milner was useless today as he was the previous game bar 2 crosses. He's hopelessly predictable and a good team will eat him alive. Run the wing, get to the 18yard line, cut inside and cross on his only foot. Any world class right back will be able to read that and block every cross with ease, nothing else to his game at all.

Likewise Carrick is horrible at the defensive role, Lampard, out of Gerrard, lamps, Barry and Carrick is the best defensively, but its a waste. We need to bring in someone for the defensive role, even if its playing a CB or a left/right back in that role. Is Warnock in the U21's? he can play leftback or across the middle, he's not fantastic, but its not about glamour or playing the 11 best players in england, its about playing the best most rounded and capable team we can.

Gerrard, lampard and Rooney all like to play between the halfway line and the penalty box, and narrow, you can't have an effective team with 3 players all wanting the same role in the same space on the field.

Heskey, is self explanatory, he shouldn't be in professional football, not least as a striker. Slow, old, stupid, poor holding up, not a great header at all, no vision, horrible finishing, constant fouling. Cole's better at everything Heskey is supposed to be good at, yet he has vision, finishing, pace, SCORES.

He went down through no fault of the defenders and appealed to the referee for a foul, how is that not deceiving the referee?

Er, he went down while fouling another player and got a penalty for it. Do you really think Rooney's intention was to get a penalty? I think you'll find it was more to "lash out".

He got the penalty - so yes, he was dishonest if he didn't point out that it was infact, not a foul.

But there's a line between deception and dishonesty.

Was what Rooney did right? No. Does it make him a cheat? No.

What exactly was his intention then, we've seen it dozens of times before, a player holding onto another player on the blindside to try to make the illusion that infact its him being held. he then went down, for no real reason, which is still unaccounted for unless he dived. Please try to explain to stupid little me, why, he's holding the defender.

As a striker going for the ball he A, wants to get infront of the defender, B, wants to run into space, C, wants to jump for a higher ball or D wants to grab the defenders shirt, giving himself less room to manouvre, control the ball and shoot. Thing is, Rooney's a pretty big guy, with a lot of strength, yet despite holding the guys shirt, he didn't actually pull the guy, it seemed enough that it appeared the defender was pulling Rooney.

From the ref's angle all he can see is Rooney acting as if he's being yanked around by the defender, and being pulled to the ground. From the ref's angle its probably a penalty, linesmen should have seen who was fouling who though, and the age old, any video replay would have resulted in Rooney getting the yellow he deserved and a goal kick awarded.

Simple fact is he really did intend to con the ref, start to finish, it was cheating, and a dive, with a foul thrown in for good measure. If he hadn't intended that all along, with nothing the defender did at all even possibly causing him to go down, why did he appeal. He appealed, because he dived, after forcing what appeared like contact to the ref.

We've no chance with that defense, dear me.

We've no chance with that team, full stop, nor that squad.

I think I'd quite like to see,

Green,

Cole, Terry, Rio, Richards(who has been superb since back at right back)
Rooney(right), Lampard, XXXXXXX, Young
Cole, Defoe

with the big hole filled by a suitable DM, a real DM, one who can play defensively, stay back, track runs, etc, etc. England don't really have any at all though, in these friendlies we should really be trying people there, Warnock, Lescott maybe, King, someone. Its pretty much the key to the team, a real DM who can improve us defensively, leaving Lampard to play his Chelsea role and run the game in midfield without tracking back and covering the defence the whole game.

Rooney can't ever be trusted to play as a striker, so why bother, he was superb when finally stuck on the wing end of last season, played there game after game, made that position his own, he'd be equally as good on the right, if not better as he's right footed mostly. he's shown for 5 years he prefers to recieve the ball deep and run at defenders, he's a winger, I wish people would notice. HIs considerable improvement in form when moved to the wing should have been an indication to most people. Likewise, Gerrard can not in any way be trusted to stay in position, no matter where we play him. Liverpool for a decade has been built around a team focused on covering for Gerrard, a team that plays twice every couple months doesn't have that understanding. He puts in one good performance in every 20 England games. Youngs Englands only left winger, full stop, if only he'd stop diving, though frankly, that should make him a shoe in for the position(if he played for a top 4 club that is).

DM, i'm sorry but I really can't comprehend your posts so I can't answer what you're saying.

It seems like you've just repeated what I said but then come to a different conclusion?

He appealed though :/

Do you have a clip of the penalty being given? Admittedly i've only seen it once but I didn't see Rooney appeal, however I may be wrong. :)

Good result, should have been a great one though. Disappointed we didn't get all 3 points. :)

We've a better GD than Poland, so things might work out ok. Really need 3 points on Wednesday.

No, however i'm 99.9 percent sure that after Rooney went down he turned his head to the Ref and put his arms in the air. That to me is an appeal, or a response as if to say "thankyou" after the penalty was awarded.

Its a bit disappointing considering his controversial "i'm not a cheat" claim the other day, after the debatable penalty against Arsenal. No-one's expecting Robbie Fowler'esque actions from him but a bit more honesty in his play would serve him well.

Although I see his qualities i'm still not sure why he's being picked over Defoe and Cole, who in my opinion should be starting. I felt we looked a lot more lively up front when they were on and although Cole didn't score, he looked more like he was going to than a guy who had twice missed from 2 yards out.

An unconvincing display for me and if we turn up like that against Croatia we could well be on the receiving end of a beating.

Video of the incident

Around the 15 second mark he slams his hand on to the ground and then turns toward the ref with both arms raised.

so you'd drop rooney who scored i think 10 goals in 7 england games last season mainly on the basis of missing a couple of chances in a friendly game?
