Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 29-31

Hopefully Rooney and Eboue will be banned for 2 matches, but we all know it won't happen. Consistency and football officials just don't mix

I switched off at the final whistle, did Arsene give an interview?

Aye sure, but my point was that Rooney goes on unpunished, whereas at least Eboue's sort of been dealt with.

Wouldn't it be simply like a retrospective red card in terms of punishment?

So in Eboue's case, it would be upped from a yellow to a red.

Or at least that's how I think it should work. Any attempt to con the ref is cheating and the players found guilty of this should be banned.

I think the ref should be limited to a yellow for this during the match to allow for mistakes but can be changed to red post-match after investigation.

But then there's that 100% idiotic rule that they can't intervene if the ref has seen it.

lol at some of you arsenal fans.

Rooney was clever, simple as. As soon as Almunia puts his hands out like that he has every right to 'ride the challenge'. He did so and good on him, he won a penalty for his side.

With regards to Eboue, he was booked and punished, therefore the incident warrants no more attention.

Difference is the obviousness of it. Rooney's dive was the same as Eduardo's. Both went down themselves, pretending to have been brought down by the keeper. Rooney was just a bit luckier as Almunia actually put his arms out and there was eventual contact.

Eboue's dive was so obvious - ie 2 feet between him and the tackle, that it was easy to call it by the ref.

We all want diving eradicated, and punishing Eduardo can only be progress on that. If these folk are shamed, then it'll hopefully see less people doing it in the future. Maybe we'll even create a new generation of players with a bit more decency in them who do not see cheating their way to victory as hte correct way to play the game. To think that in sports like golf and snooker we have players owning up to faults themselves, whereas in football honesty needs to be tortured out of them.

As to why Rooney won't be punished. Look at the posts we had from Arsenal fans on this forum (and neutral pundits) regarding Eduardo. Loads of posts excusing him, saying he wasn't cheating. Ranged from him having had a bad injury trying to get out of the way, and 'blatent contact'. If that's the arguments you get from people when there's obviously no contact, what chance have you got when there is contact in Rooney's case? You've got no chance of honest reporting because too many have a vested interest, and too much grey added for Uefa/Fifa to take action.

Riding, diving, what's the difference? He still set out to get a penalty, and we all know he won't be banned for it.

He didn't 'ride the challenge'. He went down before even getting close the Almunia and then threw himself forwards.

LOL definitely looking for it and went down whether Almunia was going to make contact or not.
This is a perfect example of what I've been going on about for months. Liverpool's Johnson did the exact same thing to Spurs on the opening day of the season and Henry was the master of it.

What's the difference between Rooney and Johnson apart from the timing of the fall makes things look different? The intention is exactly the same... get your toe on the ball a split second before the keeper and go down for the penalty, nothing else in the players mind but trying to earn a penalty.

Why isn't he trying to control the ball and go around the keeper, using his own skill to score?

Poor sportsmanship at best, cheating at worst in my eyes and I find it annoying people just accept it as perfectly normal these days.

If a player gets his toe on the ball and just boots it out of play then how is the goalkeeper, wether he touches the player or not, preventing a goalscoring opportunity? It shouldn't be a penalty unless the player would have got to the ball.
