Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 29-31

This is a perfect example of what I've been going on about for months. Liverpool's Johnson did the exact same thing to Spurs on the opening day of the season and Henry was the master of it.

What's the difference between Rooney and Johnson apart from the timing of the fall makes things look different? The intention is exactly the same... get your toe on the ball a split second before the keeper and go down for the penalty, nothing else in the players mind but trying to earn a penalty.

Why isn't he trying to control the ball and go around the keeper, using his own skill to score?

Poor sportsmanship at best, cheating at worst in my eyes and I find it annoying people just accept it as perfectly normal these days.

If a player gets his toe on the ball and just boots it out of play then how is the goalkeeper, wether he touches the player or not, preventing a goalscoring opportunity? It shouldn't be a penalty unless the player would have got to the ball.

hes fouling the player in the box whilst its still in play, therefore penalty

Welcome to the real world guys.

The fact is, there was contact and Almunia didn't have to put himself in that position.

How people are comparing it to the Eduardo one is beyond me.

One is an example of cheating whilst the other is an example of the modern game. Regardless of if you approve of it or not it doesn't matter, get used to it.

All this coming from a Chelsea fan btw, some of the arsenal fans on here are so bitter it's not even funny.

Both are cheating. Both went down themselves pretending that it was the challenge that brought them down.

Riding, diving, what's the difference? He still set out to get a penalty, and we all know he won't be banned for it.

There's a huge difference. The defender/goalkeeper is at fault for sticking their leg/arm out and not winning the ball (they have fully committed themselves to the challenge). If the player is traveling in that direction with momentum on his side he'd have to be stupid to not 'ride' the tackle.

Have you not watched football for the last 15 years?

That's like hoofing the ball away and running into someone claiming obstruction.

Fact is, it's cheating, no matter how much you've come to accept it as part of the game.

And for the lulz:

The whole foul thing is messed up.... should it be it foul when big strong athletes go sprawling to the floor when they feel the slightest contact?

I'd love to see more ref's just say "GTF up" :D

All the uproar about Eduardo the other day when all he did was time his dive wrong. That's it because that's all everyone does these days and nobody says anything.

Because running into someone is like riding a challenge that a player has committed himself to ? :o

There is no fact, it's interpretation. Some people will see it as a dive whereas others will have watched football long enough to know it's part of the modern game (no I'm not talking about diving, I'm talking about 'riding' a challenge when a defender has committed himself and failed to win the ball)

:o

I give up....

I tried typing out a reply four times to it all and just gave up in the end because I knew that it's a waste of time.

Eduardo's dive and the Rooney penalty are like chalk and cheese, but there are some very bitter fans in here who will latch onto and pick apart anything they can, right or wrong.

Best just let them get on with it.

It's still cheating whichever way you try to paint it. I'm the first to admit Almunia was stupid for coming out and a penalty is always given in those situations, it's the fact that he won't be banned for it as he still "Deceived" the ref, which is exactly what Eduardo will be banned for.

Thanks for that personal insult, I'll report it now.

Personal insult? It was a question with a hint of sarcasm. Get over yourself.

You'll have to better than that I'm afraid.

And how about the neutral fans? I couldn't care less which one won today, unless I had confirmed that bet.

Both Rooney and Eboue should recieve the same punishment as Eduardo. As should Young for his antics winning two pens in the Europa cup.

yeah! consider yourself *reported* wise guy!
But anyway, Rooney decides to go down, in that respect he's cheating.
But by the letter of the law, any contact seems to = a foul?
I've never understood that myself, people should only be falling to the ground if their legs are tripped or something similar. Not just because a hands brushed their back.
But it happens all the time, all over the pitch.

I'm a neutral fan

To say Rooney deserves the same punishment as Eboue and Eduardo is complete rubbish. I'm not going to justify my opinion again, I've done so above.

I'll agree to disagree.

Because if we punish every player who "looks for a foul" then we're going to struggle to find 11 to fill each of the 20 teams every week.

Is it right? Probably not. But it's just the way it is. Rooney was on his way down when Almunia clattered into him. It still makes it a foul. If a player had done that it would still have been given.

Eduardo went down totally on his own. Rooney was on his way down (how do you even know Rooney was "diving" - he may have just been trying to divert the ball anywhere) and Almunia finished him off.

Also, note the way Almunia's arms were right out whereas Boruc's were withdrawn.

Hence allowing Rooney to 'ride' the challenge and Eduardo 'diving'
