Well I fell down the custom keyboard world.

i am very interested in a new Keyboard and want to go down the route of a custom.
But am looking for Fast but nearly silent keys
any recommendations on where to go for one and the switches

thanks

I like these Akko Fairy switches (linear), no 'thock' but more of a soft 'squidge' noise. Haven't tried any other silents like the Penguins (tactile)

Note you can make pretty much any switch or keyboard- doesn't need to be hot swap- silent using O-rings. Just pull the keycaps and slide them over the keycap stems. Costs pennies and works really well in my experience. Some very tall profiles like SA might need thicker, or maybe two rings, but it's pretty much foolproof.

If you still want silent and custom, then the world's your oyster- there's no real need to buy an expensive Aluminium board or custom plate (unless you really want the aesthetics) as you'll be dampening all the sound benefits they might provide anyway.

that sounds right up my street.

I currently have a hyperxalloy 60% but now for work and playing some new games its not cutting it so new KB is a must just not sure where to start.

I've got a ducky with GMK dots r2 and a Model O Wireless mouse, both in white, and both yellowing to the point where I look like I smoke 40 a day.

I would probably always buy a coloured / black keyboard from now on because it's such an exaggerated yellowing, but has anybody tried bleaching them or anything similar?

Retrobrite (Hydrogen Peroxide) would probably work. I think it looks pretty great though!

That looks like the stuff. I've heard of the chemical for whitening plastics, but didn't know it was branded in such a way for restoring old consoles. That's good to know.

I think I'm looking for a refresh tbh, new keyboard, new cable, new mouse, though there's nothing wrong functionally with any of them, and I'd love it if they looked like new again!

Got my first GMK set (8008). It's ok, very overpriced for what it is and not that much better than the Ali GMK clones it replaced. Overall not worth it, imo.

Board is the Monsgeek M1V3 with Boba U4T's.

Clones have got better in recent years, a few years ago the clones would have wonky letters, missing certain letters entirely and inconsistent colours. One of the benefits to authentic GMK is the feel is still better than clones - and they’ll take longer to oil/shine.

I still think GMK is worth it - but only for certain sets now. I recently put GMK Honor Dark on a board and that set is so nice and looks great.

In my experience the cheap Chinese SA profile keycap sets that you can buy literally everywhere have been universally excellent. Perfectly moulded, a full complement of full-size ISO and ANSI keys, a really nice almost oily satin feel, and they sound great. If you like SA, try some.

Yeah I have some Akko SA keycaps and they are my favorite. They look great and have the best sound profile.

Is capslock their choice or yours ?
What cheap ones did you get? I'm after some nicer ones than the cheapo sets I bought but that don't break the bank.

Edit: I like this theme but not with the extra characters on the keys.

Add me to the list of people who "accidentally" fell down the custom mechanical keyboard rabbit hole! :) having finally got back into the PC building world after a good many years I built up Fractal North setup. I wanted a real nice keyboard to go with it so settled on a Mode SixtyFive with walnut accent and I'm super pleased with how it's turned out. The pictures don't do it justice....the brown keys are actually the same colour as the Noctua brown which is used inside the case too but pics make them look more bronze than brown. Love the off-white of the main keys and the larger grey actually more closely matches the colour of the North.

*Mode SixtyFive in black with walnut accent and brass weight, polycarbonate plate, solder PCB for ISO layout, Mode foam kit, GMK Boho keycaps, Gateron Black Ink V2 switches (lubed).

I see a stepped caps, I immediately love it.

Big fan of the v2 black inks too, currently what I'm using in my daily keyboard and I've struggled to find anything that feels/sounds as good as them. I can recommend filming them too just for some added tightness to reduce any stem wobble - although that recommendation is not going to be helpful now that you've finished the build...

Love me a stepped cap! also the small ridges on F and J for touch typing.

This is really my first foray into the proper mechanical keyboard world and I was a bit concerned the ink blacks might have been too heavy for me as I've been using MX Cherry Red's for a couple of years on a Keychain K3 for work, but I really wanted a deeper muted thocky sound and many people recommended them for that use case. As it turns out, they feel great and actually the Cherry Red's feel far too light now! The blacks combined with the foam kit and polycarbonate plate seem to have nailed the sound and feel I was looking for

I’ll always love 8008, I did own it and the first gen ABS clones with the wonky letters that went around. They were acceptable in terms of sound and colour. I just hated the legends.

I still love buying keycaps but stuck with my trusty Mr Suit. I’ve not cared to buy another keyboard since.

I bought GMK nimbus and Retrowave. I haven’t opened either sadly. I thought I’d get around to putting them on or getting a new keyboard but a new house and family commitments just mean I can’t find the time.

Plus I have no space now for my damn PC :D
