What a moron

i've been in a number of situations that have required quick thinking. One time I had had a pint and came across a car stopped sideways across both lanes of a dimly lit dual carriageway, on a bend, with it's lights off. I managed to cadence brake (no ABS) down from 70 to a slow enough speed to choose a direction, steer around the car up on the verge between the back of the car and the crash barriers (tight fit!). My passenger was amazed that I managed to avoid it at all and I discovered an unnatural love for Toyos.

Kudos on the skills, and i accept that some old codger probably wouldn't have been able to react quite so tidily.

I do not mean to attack you as an idividual, but my feelings on drink driving are quite strong, having been in the situation.

At a house party not long after i passed, some years ago, i had had a couple beers and was probably over the limit. Anyways a situation occured that i had to get home for an emergency, and i decided to drive. Should i have taken a taxi? of course but i was young, stoopid and desperate to get home.

The drive home was about fifteen miles of A-road, and i absolutely carpped it! Didn't go over 40, kept well within my side of the road, almost on rails! If a copper had of seen me i would have been had, simple as.

I was absoultely terrified, and not because i felt unfit to drive, but because of the shame i felt DUI.

So you may call me hypocritical, which is understandable, but that one experience really made an impact on me as a kid!

Never before that, and definately never again! :)

I'm not going to rag anyone for having 1 pint and driving, as many of my friends and family do, and whether people agree with it or not it's *not* illegal.
I however will not have a single drop if I'm driving, as I think if I had and I was unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident I would be questioning whether the beer was to blame.

Getting shedded and driving is inexcusable, and should be a lifetime loss of licence, I don't care if you've learned lessons or not, people die due to this, and I believe in 0 tolerance.

What makes me laugh is all these do gooders in here

Bet half of the people in here have driven when still over the limit in the morning :p

Being a newbi can I just throw 1 into this thread?
When I left Uni 2 years ago the World woz my oyster. Then I got hit by some "nice, respectable gentleman" who was D&D. I finished up in a wheelchair 4 3mths. Now I walk with a permanent limp.Got a couple of 'dead-end' jobs(coz i cnt do *** i got my Degree in), an now i'm going bk to college. What did he get-2 yrs. ban 'n' £500 fine. Bt I dont let it get me down- lifes too short 'innit'!! :)

My 'do gooder' post was aimed at Jez who made it obvious he knowingly drives over the limit. Then thought he was special as he doesn't crash when other people do.

I don't see a problem with a pint then driving, as this is under the limit and perfectly legal.

I totally frgot about this thread, but thought you'd all like to know that Barry got away with it !! We are all rather surprised and felt he deserveda 12 month ban !!

Basically he told the law that there was someone else drivng the car, gave them a false name and discription, nobody saw him driving the car and nobody else was hurt in the accident. He wasn't on the A30 as such, but just about to get on it, he was coming from Camborne and joining the A30, if you've been there recently and don't see a lamp post, thats the one he hit.

It's all very well throwing number of pints/units etc. around, but to give you an example, I went out with a mate, he's about 6'3 and 16 stone, goes to the gym (very fit) etc. He drove into town, we were drinking bottles of lager. I think we were out for 4 hours, he drank 3 bottles and a pint. On the way home he gets pulled over and the cops breathalise him. I think they said the limit was 80mg, anyway he was at 20mg.

Maybe some people process it faster, or bigger people can absorb more. Might be worth investing in some of those portable breathalisers thingys because let's face it, if you live 10 miles out of town a taxi is going to cost you £30 each way and if you can pace yourself as to remain under the limit at the end of the night, why not drive? :)

The way i see it there is only 1 totally safe limit and that is if you are drinking don't drive and if you are driving don't drink, end of there are no second guesses you might pass a brethalizer but are you fit to drive??

I had it rammed into me 3 days after passing my test, the first time i was allowed to drive my folks car alone and was under strict instructions to not drink alcohol. Anyway long story short on the way home from the pub i was pulled over and brethalised, it scared the living **** out of me and taught me a lesson, i hadn't drank alcohol so i passed with flying colours but as it wasn't my car and i had no id / license on me (sent away to dvla) i was given a producer and was told if i had no licence or only a provisional i would be arrested. I assume everything turned out ok as i never heard anything after failing to produce a licence so i assume they checked with dvla and my licence had been processed.

I for one are for the zero tolerence and thinkonly trace amounts of alcohol should be allowed too many innocent people die or are seriously injured by people like the chap described in the op.

My 2p.

So just after the double mini's heading for the a30 then?

He lose it on the corner at the bottom?(right hander) If so then do you think excessive speed had something to do with it? I've been in a car with someone doing a tad bit too fast around there. Nasty corner.
