Personally, if i'm at some traffic lights that change fair quickly I keep it in gear. But if I know I have to wait a while i'll sometimes put it in neutral if I can be bothered.

Going down a nice long steep hill, match gear to speed but use the brakes to hold back the car instead of the engine, thereby increasing the chance of brake fade - fun for all the family. :/
