What book are you reading...

Just finished Well of Ascension, book 2 in the Mistborn series. Think I'm one of the few that actually preferred it to The Final Empire, a lot less dull exposition which frustrated me a lot at times during TFE. I like Sandersons style a lot and he's got an exceptional imagination, but the YA vibes that controlled so much of the middle portion of WoA didn't do the tone of the book any favours, though they're mostly overcome by the ending, though that in and of itself felt oddly abrupt given how long the novel is.

Had a really good time with it though, pretty much finished it in around 4 days which says it all really. Onto The Hero of Ages!

Finished the first book of Blood and Bone by John Gwynne the follow-up trilogy to The Faithful and The Fallen. It was great, set 100 years or so after the first trilogy so a lot of the characters from the first are long gone but the repercussions of the events of the first series are explored.

Been recommended the series a few times now. Need to make the decision to start either that (The Faithful and The Fallen) or the Stormlight series once I've finished Mistborn. I take it you've read both? Which would you recommend?

Well If you don't care about it not being finished then Stormlight Archives is one of my favourite series. Gwynne's books are on a generally smaller scale than Stormlight Archives, it has a much larger cast and a more 'epic' feel to it. Gwynne's are more the classic hero's journey style with a focus on 3 or so main characters journeys.

I actually wouldn't advise jumping straight into Stormlight. I'd read Warbreaker first. It's not strictly necessary, but some things you might otherwise find inconsequential, or at least odd, in stormlight might seem more important and/or make more sense if you do.

Currently in the middle of Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey.
I generally prefer to read the book first before watching the film/series, but I didn't realise The Expanse was an adaptation until I was nearly finished watching it.

I finished Lieutenant Hornblower (2nd book) last night. A very enjoyable read! I think I have about 8 more to go on my bookshelf, bought for £1 each in a second hand bookshop.

Just about to start "Zulu", by Saul David- a history of the British-Zulu wars.

Amphitrite by Brandon Q Morris - he is described as Hard SciFi.. and he is.. and its very good. Only got 3 or so of his books left to read. Only one weak one out of 10+ read so far

I abandoned the Zulu wars book as it descended into huge lists of regiments, political figures and boring detail.

Just finished another Hornblower book- The Happy Return. I'm itching to get into the next one, but will probably go for scifi for my next book, for a change.

I'm reading the John Decker series by Anthony M Strong (on Kindle Unlimited). They're ready to read, have short chapters that give me that "just one more" feeling and are kind of like an X-Files "monster of the week" episode or a B-grade monster movie. Just fun, enjoyable nonsense.

I also ploughed through "Prehistoric: A Dinosaur Anthology" (also on KU). A collection of short stories by various authors where the protagonists end up facing dinosaurs in some situation or another. Entertaining and a real example of how different authors can take the same premise and produce VERY different results.

Now Amphitrite #2 - I'm not hugely imaginative when I find a great author - I tend to read everything they have done

God help me I've started the Horus Heresy... Easy books to read, not a great deal of depth to them but I love the massive expansive world. Flying through them at a pace of knots.

Oof good luck, I gave up with that somewhere around book 30 something. Became pretty clear that they were dragging it out to sell more miniatures. Has it even finished yet?
