What did you do to your bike today?

Went up to Newlands corner today. Some nice bikes up there, some new BSAs, old Triumph Tiger 750, BSA Rocket 3, Laverda Jota, and the usual R1s, Blades, Gixers etc. Nice being around bikes again.

Where would one go for modified bike insurance? Is there any that don't require an extensive list of modifications.
Wasn't really looking for another bike, but a modern café racer popped up for sale.

I did a quick future quote, where I am freshly after DAS at the age of 21 with 3 years of NCB. For a GSXR 750 K8...

This is depressing...

That's not bad considering, I'm looking at a GSXR750 L2. Insurance quote yesterday was £800 FC. £500 FC on a Multistrada.

23 years old, 5 NCB, had licence 5 years, been riding 6 years. Only paid £270 this year on my 2005 ZX6R so gonna hang on.

Just got a quote from a local garage to get a full service done on the SV, while I'm happy to give most things a go I've got no idea when it was last properly checked over so want to get it done for peace of mind.

They want £330 for this

Full oil change – OE specification.
New oil filter – OE specification.
New air filter – OE specification.
New NGK spark plugs.
Replace coolant.
Brake calipers removed & cleaned.
Brake pistons cleaned and red rubber grease applied.
Full Hydraulic Fluid System flushed.
All levers & pivots cleaned and lubricated.
Throttle & clutch adjustment.
General lubrication and inspection.
Tyre condition and pressures checked and adjusted.
Chain adjustment and lubrication.
All lights / electrics checked.

Does that sound like a lot or a decent price?

I also asked them about checking the valve clearances as again I've got no idea when or if it's ever been done and the bikes rapidly approaching 25k miles, in terms of equipment needed for this I thought the only specialist bit was a set of feeler gauges which cost next to nothing but apparently due to a burglary they can't do it does that seem a bit strange to anyone else? Or am I missing the need for some expensive bit of kit?

Looks alright but you can do all those yourself

Hardest on that list is the fork oil change, purely because of getting the forks out

Valve clearances should be OK with that mileage but could just get those checked? Might need new rocker cover gaskets/adhesive

Yh feeler guages and shims if its shims and bucket

I would say an absolute rip off, most of it can be done by watching youtube videos and you will feel much happier to have done it yourself!

Cant comment on the valves though, but you will need a new valve cover gasket if you were to check them.

How many mods does it have?

This is what can be modified without notifying the insurers:

Bennetts accept the following modifications as standard – you do not need to tell us about them when you buy a policy, or if you add any of them later:

1.Disability Adapted

2.Air Filter Changes

3.Bar Ends

4.Braided Hoses

5.Decals/Stickers (unless Race Replica)

6.Grippers

7.Heated Grips

8.Huggers

9.Lights/Indicators/Mirrors

10.Scottoilers

11.Screen Changes

12.Seat Replacement

13.Seat Cowl/Single Seat Units

14.Sissy Bars (Long Back Rest)

15.Tail Tidy

16.Tank Pads

If your mods aren't on that list, you can declare an extra 3 mods to your insurer, this is with Bennetts.

I changed the oil filter and oil myself and its not a hard task. There are even walk throughs for it:

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/1999-2002+Suzuki+SV650+Oil+Change/6500

Note that the above guide uses FAR too much oil, but you get the jist. The same site also does one for spark plug changes which will enable you to drain engine coolant and access air filter along the way.

I bought the SV in March and only recently starting looking into this stuff as I havn't worked on bikes before either. I can understand being a bit nervous about some of this but once you have done it you will see just how easy it is

Looks about right. It's mainly time you're paying for.

I've changed my own oil and filter, rear suspension, chain and sprockets and other little bits and bobs so to be honest nothing on that list would probably cause me a major issue if I had the time but that's half the issue time is at a premium especially now it's going to be dark and/or wet for most of the time I could work on it and I don't have anywhere under cover.

That's a crazy amount of oil they specify! I used 2.7lt when I done my filter change and that took it to just under the full mark and they specify 3.4!?

Did you run it for a bit turnip off then check the level again it can drop one its been pumped into all the tubes etc

Rode it for the first time in a while without ear plugs . Pure awesome deafening noise :D

Taking my wheels off tonight, then borrowing a car tomorrow to get the tyres changed. Hopefully my torque wrench can handle taking the main bolt off without clicking... I don't have a breaker bar. Never been a problem before, but my other bikes didn't have the world's hugest nut on at 146nm :p. Torque wrench does go up to 210nm so shouldn't be an issue.

Visually a hell off a lot. Mechanically no idea.

Something along these lines, this one is a Yamaha thundercat or was.

Wouldn't have a clue on how to even get a quote for something along those lines.

Saw one like that in town the other day, proper rat bike, rear wheel sticking out, absolutely loved it. That one in the pic needs a more racey rear.

I don't get how race rep graphics count as a mod? Weird

If they ever ask me any mods I just say no,unless its got a whacking great turbo or nitrous I don't think they are too fussed

More costly to replace than standard paint job plastics I'd imagine.
