That's only for your first full licence, adding extra categories (whether that's bike/car/hgv etc.) doesn't reset that. And it's 6 points in the first 2 years and licence goes bye-bye.

I had a street triple test ride in my first year (and under 25) from a friendly triumph dealership. Although just because they let you, doesn't mean you'll actually be covered by their insurance. The guy basically said to tick the boxes. Ultimately I'd have had a huge bill if I looped it coming out the dealership. He wanted me to buy it though, and I almost did it was an awesome bike, but then my brain took over the decision and wouldn't let me spend so much money on a toy :(

If you got stopped by the police it would have been bye-bye licence.

Well it wouldn't. It was a demo bike and the garage would confirm that I was riding under their demo insurance. Technicalities wouldn't be checked by the police, those would only be checked in event of an accident by the insurers. That's what insurance companies do to weasel out of paying the claims (albeit rightfully so in this case).

No dealer would send you out on a test ride without insurance, it's normally the reason why they need a years riding experience. I was trying to get a test ride on a used Aprilia Shiver last year and as the dealer had recently changed their insurance company they couldn't let me out on it.

£1000 excesses however are pretty normal! Even the NC750x I rode the other day had a grand excess!

Conrgrats on the pass, did mine earlier this year and remember the nerves well, one of the few things I got right in 2015.

I didn't even think of that, there's no way I'm going anywhere near test rides with my luck.

I don't think paying an insurance excess deposit for a test ride on a brand new bike is unrealisable if you are a new rider. I didn't have to but I did have a salesman come with me, not sure if that was for insurance or just to make sure I wasn't going for a joy ride!

You only pay the excess if you crash, just like normal bike insurance. The only thing I've ever had to pay for on a test ride is some petrol! Just don't crash/drop it and you'll be fine :D

Its a state, and devastatingly the fairing has been cut so have to order a new left and right side. Plenty of right hand sides, but the lefts are proving to be harder to find that rocking horse poo.

She will be repaired with all second hand parts to keep costs down. I hope to restore her to a beautiful state.

I thought some places want to take a deposit off you before you test ride and then you get it back if the bike isn't damaged?

You can take insurance excess insurance out yourself too. Always recommended when hiring as car for example.

Typically it's about £30 and that covers you for a year so any cars you hire the excess is covered. You might be able to get something similar to cover bikes I dunno?

I have one of those policies for my main bike as my excess was £1050, I don't know if it covers me for hire bikes though, will have to check.
