What did you do to your bike today?

Does it not come out using the inner leg as a slide hammer, the bushes inside pushing it out?

Yep, getting them out is simple. A plastic bag to get the new seals over the fork leg and a piece or drainpipe to use as a seal driver are the only specialist "tools" needed to refit them.

It's a messy but easy job.

Yup, left fork was simple, 2 min job to get the seal out. Other one won't budge.

Give it a rinse down & then took it out for a good ride, Don't know why I bothered cleaning it though as I'm getting caught in the rain about every half hour, Good job it only takes a few minutes to clean/rinse down again.

Thought I'd pop over JST Biker clothing whilst out & about to have a look at some Waterproof Textiles & ended up buying a JST Jacket & some JST Trousers (Waterproof over trouser type) I spent ages in the shop trying on untold kit until I got the perfect fit jacket & trousers. They felt so good I kept them on & stuck my leathers in my Top box & went out for a long ride after leaving the shop, Comfort levels are now at Maximum :D

2 of us, one holding the fork leg, other holding top of the leg, pull as hard and fast as possible. 2 hours of that, knackered now lol. Got a feeling the bush might be causing an issue or something. Fork is sitting on the heater now in the hope that helps. Have heard of people using a blowtorch on the outside to loosen it.

its just badly corroded in there,a heatgun would help, you might have pulled the bushings together idk making it harder

just pull harder:D

Gave the chain a proper clean first one it's had in ages. Used some of the wd40 chain cleaner I picked up in aldi, that stuff pees all over the sdoc chain cleaner. Quick squirt and even my rear sprocket was shiny and silver it's not been that colour since it was fitted!

Be careful heating Aluminium- depends on the alloy and temperature, but it can become brittle if you overdo it. Probably best to check what the material is before doing it...

I don't have anything that'll make it particularly hot, was just something I've read when people have had the same issue.

Tried again today, no movement again.

Going to take it to the local shop tomorrow, hopefully he has some ideas or tools that might help.

It can't be the seal that's causing this, the bush below must be stuck or rust welded together or something. The amount of force and time we've put in has to mean it's something more than just the seal causing this.

Gutted as I've got everything else ready to go for it. Nice fresh oil, filter, spark plugs, battery charged up, new front left caliper, new pads and piston seals to go on. Could have had it all done this weekend if that fork hadn't jammed.

I know, it's bummer, it happens though. Take an accurate measurement of the amount of stanchion showing with the fork leg fully extended, then give it a few more big bashes and see if it's moving at all. If it's edging out then you could be right and something's corroded.

The top bush and circlip are the only bits that are in the way of the bottom bush. If you haven't already it may be worth pulling the damper rod out in case something's jamming up in there....

As it is now, it just needs some sort of tool which can be jammed in to the seal to yank it out, plus a decent bench clamp would help, which I unfortunately don't have.

Everything's out of the fork that can be out - spring, damper rod, etc.

I just wish there was a way to make that bush drop off so I can at least get the stanchion out which means I can then force the seal out with a screwdriver.

Oh well, all packed away for now, hopefully the shop can help tomorrow & hopefully it doesn't cost too much.

Thank you for your help & suggestions though :)

Nice wash & wax today.

Also shows my new stubby levers :)

Replaced one fork seal on my Hornet, no problem, all ready to go back on the bike.

The other seal though won't budge. Can't get it off. Tried for a good 3 hours :(

Hopefully your local garage can get it out. How much are new front forks anyway, hopefully it doesn't come to that but have you looked ? From the videos i've seen it looks so bloody easy ... typical. :( At least you have that sexy speed triple to help destress.

Today I had a little blast around the local back roads, stopped off at a gear merch in Glasgow called Firecrest only for a browse ... walked out with a leather jacket  to replace my cheap and rather poor Frank Thomas effort.

Did Llandow on Saturday, horrible rain in the morning but soon cleared to lovely sunshine and more importantly, a dry track.

Took a slight shortcut after locking up the back wheel braking for the Bus-Stop, stayed shiny side up though

Yeh, hope so. Just dropped it off with them, he said he doesn't expect it to cost much and knew exactly what the issue was. Basically the bushes have bunched up at the top, which is why it gets stuck when I pull. So I might have ruined the bush, but that's not the end of the world
