What did you do to your bike today?

What did I do to my bike yesterday....

Took a pillion (my Wife) for the first time ever!

Felt so odd when stopping for the first time, even though she wasn't moving (so she said), it felt like there was a weave going on when coming to a stop - I was all ready to say "nope" right then and there.

Glad we persisted though, as after afew hours of trundling around an industrial estate, we both got more confident, and it felt fine.

Looking forward to our first trip out on the bike now :)

Oh, and I had a new chain and sprocket set fitted, along with a new rear tyre :P

Well, I have been toying about with my old CBR in an on-and-off sort of way.

I got her running the other day, after leaving her stand for almost 3 years, and I did next to no work to do it either... I just bought a gallow of fuel and a new battery, about a month ago and then chucked the fuel in and the battery on last week and after killing the battery stone dead with me non-stop turning the started motor, I took it off and recharged it and proceeded to try again... This time remembering to flick the swicth to let her start up and in a few moments, I had a few pops and thensome more and more and then I was able to let go of the electric foot and it tok a little coaxing, but she was soon running. I think in total about 2 minutes of effort and she was ocne again ticking over like a dream.

With that custom exhaust however the dream was the estates nightmare as she gave a pant wetting howl that would terrify a banshee.

Only issue, is that she has a seriously bad fuel leak.

So, today I set about to find the source of that leak.

Carb 3 ( Middle-right ) its pouring out and after taking the tank off and the air box, I am buggered if I m going to be able to get at the carbs properly... Not sure if the fuel pipe is the culprit and that simply renewing the pipes would sove it, or if its the overflow or anything???

As soon as I turn the key, the pump started to push the fuel out, so Im not sure its even getting into the carb at all, but again I cannot quite see it?

Im in a wheelchair and and only have use of one hand, so its not the easiest job for me.

Whats funny is that my trike is almost ready and I have no intention if ever riding the CBR again.

I was surprised to read that there were not carb issues after it standing like that. I wonder if the float is stuck and its getting flooded? I'm no expert with carbs by any stretch though. Which model/year of CBR is it?

Managed to sort the crank case plug.

I remember I had the exact same thing happen to my old gsxr where the plug was jammed in solid and I couldnt even get it out with a hammer and punch. In the end I had to take the hole crank case cover off and get the plug out with a pin spanner.

So i thought I'd save my self a bit of money and do the same mod to my DRZ plug.

Started by drilling two 4mm holes the same distance apart as a pin spanner.

Next I ground the end of a 4.5mm drill bit flat and re-drilled the holes so they had a flat bottom.

Doing this means the pin spanner can go in further.

you only need to go a couple of mm deep with the holes as you dont want to risk going right through.

after that I filled the gouges made by the center punch and gave it all a light sand.

and then a few coats of high temp engine paint and its all done.

Using a pin spanner is much more effective than an allen key on these plugs as they are made from soft aluminium and prone to stripping.

I also much prefer using this method over a center punch and hammer as its a bit crude for my liking, unfortunately i didn't have the tools needed at the time so had to resort to the hammer and punch.

I recommend this little mod to every one with a similar OEM plug, its easy to do and will save a lot of stress in the future :)

I polished out the exhaust header and attached the numberplate, I also got rid of all the rusty spots around the bike which were visible. The hidden are yet to be sorted out, some day... :p

I've also adjusted and lubricated the chain. :D

Edit: With the oil heatsink cover, I'll get some plastic sheet and paint it with a brush. The screw is F and I don't want to risk messing the thread. :(

Edit2: The bike was serviced 1000 miles ago, I had another look on the service manual. I'll service it on Friday, still waiting for some bits to arrive...

I can't get the mudguard off, sprayed some WD40. Will spray some more later and try to take it off tomorrow, I already snapped 2 allen keys. :p

Edit: It looks like, no one really taken anything apart, only the brake callipers had some of that copper gel applied to the screws. Another job for some other day, clean the brake calipers. :p

If it was only serviced 1000 miles ago I'd probably just leave it for a bit to be honest that's only a months millage for me I'd be skint!

The front mud guard is held on by screws underneath the Allen bolts on the outside aren't what actually holds it on. You'll need to drop the front wheel out to get a good go at the screws.

Cheers for the tip, that service was 7 months ago though. I guess it still good, literally the pads have so much life left in them. So I'm guessing the old bloke gave it for a full service, but he said that the V-Twin isn't for him anymore he missed his old bandit so he got another one. :p

The pads I changed out a few weeks ago had done 9k with me and however many with the previous owner and still had plenty of life to be honest I only changed them because I picked new ones up cheap and wanted totally fresh calipers and pads. There was probably easily another 6 or 7k in them.

I'd maybe drop the oil if it's been sitting around for a lot of that time but apart from that if it had a full going over 1k miles ago no point doing it again unless you just fancy fiddling with it. I'm guilty of just spending a day messing about with mine just because rather than because it actually needs anything doing :o

I don't have anywhere to store all the stuff I bought so far, so it'll get a service on friday if the rest of bits arrive. I want to do it all in one go...

What is that black thing for? :p

I bought some new coolant, 4 litres of oil and an oil filter and the realised I've got nothing to drain the old oil into sigh.

Might as well buy a cheapy £5 oil bucket as I'd rather not make a mess.

New tyres are just mocking me sat next to the bike but I'll get that front wheel off soon. There's a mobile tyre fitter I'm waiting to hear back from before I take it to a garage.

Just need to take the tank off and see what the air filter is looking like before buying a new one

Dropped it on the drive.. Really mad, been on a bike for just over a year without issue and then this stupid moment. I've just moved house over the weekend, had 3 long days sorting the house out and moving, did a night shift last night without much sleep, just about to go to another one and somehow dropped it while moving it on the new drive.

I basically just ran out of space behind me and the bike started to tip forward and I couldn't pull it back, not major damage but just so irritating, I desperately need a rest but I have to be awake for the next 12 hours.
