What did you do to your bike today?

Was a sunny day yesterday so left mine at a dealer for a quick blast on this:

Great fun, absolute child-play to get on and ride, so easy. Turns in really quickly, at first you feel like you are right on-top of the front wheel but very quickly get used to it. The engine is buttery smooth and the stock system sounds pretty convincing. The only things which let it down a little and could use some improvement were:

- Throttle: About an inch of free play and at times was a little snatchy rolling back on the power
- Brakes: No linked brakes. Could use a little more bite, especially on the front. Felt like there was nothing and you really have to pull to get into the meat of the braking ability.

For the money it's a cracking bike though. Definitely worth a test ride if you want a no thrills, no electronics, no rider modes get on and go kind of a machine. Reminded me of riding lower capacity bikes which let you wring them out more - despite the 125PS and 900cc engine it was quite forgiving.

Dat green frame though

You can limit the system to only shift above a certain RPM. Mine is set at 3k before it works. the cut time is only 60ms at the mo and next time I ride I think I will cut it to 55ms as there is still a small lurch at 60ms.

Fitted a R&G Chain guard a few days ago, had my rear Ohlins set up yesterday and it's off to PCR Performance in 2 weeks to be dyno'd and remapped.

Washed the bike completely at the weekend, cleaned the chain, lubed it, cleaned the brake discs/pads and GT85'd the lot.

Got home today to find my forks are way off being aligned properly :(

I have to be honest, not pointless for me. I still really enjoy it, especially on a bike that'll happily run at low revs when it renders the clutch pointless.

I've owned half a dozen bikes with quickshifters fitted. The BMW quickshifter is in another league, any rev, any speed, it works perfectly. Aprilia one isn't bad, but you just can't stir the cogs like you can the Beemer. Be interested to try the new 2017 RSV/Tuono out, which I will in a few months when I take mine in for service, for comparison as they now have up and down quickshift/blipper.

Popped in my local Ducati dealership today, other half asked about the Supersport and 959, they've offered her a roadtest this weekend (that's when they're getting their Supersport demonstrator) if she wants it, she's tempted.

I had a close up look at the KTMs, new Super Duke looks good as does the new 1290 Super Adventure. Checked out the 765 RS and a ltd ed. Street Triple R with etched paint work, looked like a hologram on the tank, very smart. Only 50 of them apparently. http://www.triumphworld.co.uk/pages/news/news-and-events/street-triple-r-dark-limited-edition.htm

Hopfully diagnosed my cutting out issue.

See my previous post:
Had my first run out on the tuono this year :D however, things did not go as expected...

Went to have a look in a dealer who had both a pre-vtec VFR800 and a CBR900RR just the other side of Chelmsford. 50 miles, about an hour away.

I get to the dealer but they're closed for lunch, so i pop over to Maldon down the road and gatecrash a car meet :D

Rode back to the dealer and the bike cut out/surged a couple of times, didn't really think anything of it.

Looked at the bikes quickly then went to ride home. Got a little way up the road and the bike started cutting out, stalling, and running really tough, back firing at 4k revs.

Pulled over just before i got the A12 as it wasn't even idling properly, would splutter and then die. Let it cool down and gave it another go, got about 500 years down the road, same thing - dying at any revs, like it was struggling for fuel (plenty of fuel in the tank though). Stopped in a village and let the bike cool down again, it then let me ride about 40 miles at between 50-70mph, taking it easy as i didn't want to be in the fast lane if it cut out again. Just coming up to the Dartford crossing and it started again :(

Gave it another 20 minutes, the bike was still not even able to idle, then it starts running ok... I go to pull away and 20ft later it's cutting out!!!:(

Doesn't she look pretty waiting for the AA man to come though...:p:rolleyes::(

Got a ride back in an AA flat bed truck. The first AA bloke got the bike running as the battery was dead and it ran perfect idling for 10 minutes.

So the issue only happens when the bike has been running for a while, so something is getting hot and making it run like that. The fuelling seems very rich, you can smell the petrol when it's running. Giving it throttle when it's cutting out just makes it cut out more, if you get my drift. Could be stator or the coils, but both cylinders are cutting out/running rough.

Any ideas?

So, I did 120 miles on the bike on Saturday when it was a little chilly. I've been using it since Tuesday this week to go to work, all good until on the way home tonight it starts cutting out again about 10 miles after the fuel light came on!

So, low fuel level, only when it's warm (air temp and bike temp). So I pop open the fuel cap and there's no woosh, so there's no blocked breathers. I start the bike with the fuel cap open and see what I think is vibrations in the fuel...

What it is, in fact, is a mini jacuzzi in my tank!! When the pump primes it's like someone's farted in the bath, and with the bike running it's full on hot tub levels of bubbles. Now the fuel pump is a submersed one with the intake at the very bottom so air is getting in somewhere! The fuel pump sits vertical with a hose in a U bend which goes to the fuel filter, and it's common for this hose to crack or get a hole in it. When the fuel drops below the level of the hose I'm guessing it's pulling in air to the system, either making the bike run like crap due to not enough fuel pressure and/or the fuel pump to overheat as there's air getting into it and it's cooled by the fuel.

To prove this, I went to the gym on the bike, after filling up - no bubbles (maybe a tiny one) on priming the pump and non when running, or at least nowhere near the level it was before. And the bike is running perfectly!

Now just for the job of draining the tank and removing the filter. At least a workaround is to keep the tank above 2/3rds full!! :D

Put Renthal 658's on and lubed my clutch cable, things to do tomorrow: align the wheel with the handlebars, re-position the bars and controls... oh and bleed the brakes.
