What did you do to your bike today?

I'm ****** off.

Took the bike apart today to see how bad it is, it's a bit worse than I thought. Also couldn't get one of the pegs back on properly so now it's flopping about. Looking at my insurance, it's a £500 excess, and the elevated insurance premium. Other options are to get the bike fixed on my own dime which will probably be less than £500, or take the hit on the trade in.

Probably just going to take the hit, cba dealing with this nonsense.

You'd trade the bike in because of the damage, or were you already selling it?

What's the bike?

Really sorry to hear it. Insurance is unlikley to be worth it in the long run. So I think you need to take a look at whatever is the smallest loss between getting it fixed and trading it in. If the difference is marginal then just trade it in as it is to save the hassle.

Any photos?

If it's plastic damage- fairing brackets etc, get a plastic repair kit, or even a low temperature soldering iron and a chunk of donor ABS, it's amazing what you can fix. Fairing mounts can be bent back super easily.

I had a bunch of broken brackets on my S1000RR. No idea how or when it happened, it may even have been BMW when they serviced it: It only came to light when I had to disassemble everything to fit a Schnitzer bar conversion (because BMW). All sorted in an afternoon.

Took my bike to work last week, fancied a change from the car. Put main beam on and didn't light the road up as much as usual. The Denali cansmart had burnt out rendering my aux lights inoperative, great! It's only been on the bike since 2018.

Ordered a Hex Ez-Can to replace the Denali as it's identical but cheaper. Installed it today and got my lights all working again. Couple of hundred quid I could've done without forking out!

Had a lovely ride down to Lyme Regis via Crewkerne, then onto Weymouth and back, yesterday - though Calimoto picked some right dodgy roads at times; the worst being a single track with loads of gravel and no passing places for 3 miles

Both me and a mate also had a proper close call coming out of Bradford-On-Avon, must have been a gravel spill on a bend, as we both span up the rears, I was then heading towards the verge and most gravel - the corner was in shade and we didn't see a thing. Thank **** for modern electronics!

Day off to give the Hayabusa a blow after this horrendous summer. 120 miles all told, Old Stores Cafe at Corwen, 7 ducks in the seating area quacking up a storm and demanding your chips, made my day :) Up to the Ponderosa for an ice cream, may be expensive but the mint choc chip has HUGE chocolate chunks in it and I got there just in time for a new tub so it starting that lovely melting as soon as I got it outside.

Down into Llangollen, avoid that place today as the Spar is being refurbished (I think) and the delivery vans are snarling the town centre up something fierce. Along the A5 to Shrewsbury, the A49 to Whitchurch and the Midway Truck Stop for a leg break and a drink, then the A41 which was eerily and GLORIOUSLY empty for a solid blat all the way to Chester and home.

Now to clean the flies off the old visor and put the little beauty back under her cover once she's cooled down.

Pushed the ******* thing about half a mile in that blazing heat today -.-
Was on my way to work when she started running rough, rev counter starts going back and forth, like the ignition was being turned on and off rapidly, then she just straight up cut out. Was close-ish to work, so pushed the bike to a random driveway (asked at the house first, obvs) then after work took the van to get the bike home. Got home about 1/2 hour ago, thought balls, I'll see if she'll start,.......yup. On the button.
Overheated maybe? But my thoughts are electrical, with the rev needle fluctuating wildly like that. Sigh. Old bikes......

Yes sounds electrical. The only thing that occurs to me related to heat is a connection expanding when hot. E.g. An old car used to cut out going over bumps because the connection to the battery was flakey.

Found that when BMW repaired it - they not only chewed up the gear lever bolt, to the point it'll need drilling out, but when inspecting pigeon damage this morning; they have also chewed up the fairing torx bolts, ripped a rubber damper on one of the fiaring bolts on the radiator (probably too tight), and completely didn't bother fitting a rear fairing bolt!

Disgusting service - so I've fired off a few complaints
Bit of an update on this.

Had a very apologetic call from BMW in Bristol, they offered a free 'health check' on the bike - but as I told the guy I spoke to; the bike is running perfectly fine, so it'll just be a waste of our time. Opted instead for them to just send me replacement bolts, and I'll fit them - a bag of which arrived this weekend, more than I needed, so nice to have some spares!

Sadly there might also be something else knackered - there's a engine spoiler at the bottom that won't clip in now - so the clip has either been broken, or it's [hopefully] just and alignment issue. Certainly wasn't there pre-crash, and I don't think they replaced it - so either missed it from the scope of work, or...???

Had an apologetic email from BMW UK too, so my email to Germany didn't go into the abyss after all - oddly they wanted photos of my V5C, I presume to check I was actually an owner, and not some troll. Anyway, sent that off last week, and they are 'investigating' it now. No idea what the outcome might be, free stuff hopefully, maybe they'll give me some more HP goodies to fit :D

If the plastic I'm thinking of, it just clips in..

It does have to be lined up correctly to clip in.
Yeah that's the bit - I can push it in (ooh err) but it comes straight back out, but only on th left side - the right is fine. I reckon when I get around to taking it off, I'll find the clip is snapped :(

Either that or they’ve tightened up the torx that holds that panel on before they tried to clip it in and it’s at the wrong angle.
It should be clipped in first, then the torx bolt tightened.

The bracket on the underside of the oil cooler was bent:

Straightened it out and the fairing slots together as it should, phew!

What was mental though, was the bolt that holds the gear lever to the frame, had worked itself loose! Probably explained to really aggressive shifting from 1st to 2nd I've been getting lately! I think I found the correct torque spec for it - 19nm and thread lock; but there wasn't a drop of lock on it! So yet another top job by BMW Motorrad Bristol.

Edit: excuse the mess - that's all the packets of bolts from BMW, that my daughter "helped" me to get out :D

What a faff. Slightly related, when my S1000RR was briefly nicked via being thrown in a van, I had my local BMW do the six grand of repairs. In Teresa May's 'hood. Mechanically I had no complaints but the place they sent the new panels to for adding stickers and lacquering were utterly useless. Took I believe three attempts at side panels, nose cone etc before I gave up and part exed it out of my world.

I'd been hoping putting stickers on (the Motorsports stripes of 2018 year) would have been simple compared to any paint, but not for those 5 year olds!

I found over my decade ish of BMWs that the dealer service varied wildly with a bit of turnover. They had no process for succession management etc and so one or two people leaving changed the whole affair.

Saying that my KTM dealer just had the owner retire and/or sell it, and I'm in tomorrow for valves... so we'll see if it retains its decent-for-ktm reputation :D.

Funny you mention it - as the panel they replaced, got re-done twice before BMW were happy with it, maybe their paint/sticker combo is just too much for some to get right :D

The Bristol branch seems to really struggle with staffing in the workshop, and the workshop manager I had been in touch with when they had my bike, left a few days before I picked my bike up. The reviews online seem to be a big thumbs up for sales, but not for servicing.
