What film did you watch last night?

What a load of rubbish.

WWI and WWII are taught in schools worldwide, they are burned into kids minds form an early age. Iraq and Afghanistan are piddling little conflicts in comparison, and no-one really takes huge interest in them as they don't affect us in general. We see it on the news, but it is distant and remote. Also, the events are nothing compared to the epic atrocities committed in WWI and WWII, so it also lacks impact form that angle.

Historical war movies are about as far from irrelevant as you can get, and I have seen or heard nothing that would make me think otherwise.

On top of that good action is good action and always well received by us action fans.

I think the "older" war movies are not relevant in today's age.
So any war movies made in 2014 would focus on recent events, eg. the Afghanistan war or Iraq war.

A lot of cinema-going public have no interest in wars which occurred 70 yrs ago.
Its easier to market an Afghanistan war movie, as more people can relate to it.

Of course, if Steven Spielberg or James Cameron do a historical war movie, it'll probably make heaps of cash.

This post is highly conflicting with that last sentence.

I recall The Pacific doing quite well, albeit a tv series.

Later this year "Fury" is being released starring Brad Pitt as a Sherman tank commander; I'm sure there will be plenty of appetite for it.

Bourne Legacy wasnt a bad movie.
It was just that it was same old, same old.
Basically more of exactly the same, albeit with different actors.

If you are doing a reboot, you should wait about 20 years.

There are plenty of other movies more than 20yrs old which can be re-made.

It's not a reboot, the story is parallel to what you see in the damon Bourne Trilogy.

So what's changed since, I don't know, Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line in 1998? Has everyone got bored of World War II in 16 years? How did Band of Brothers end up so highly acclaimed? Were people still interested in World War II in 2001? Enemy At The Gates also came out that year, and did quite well. Downfall was released in 2004 to a very good reception, so clearly people were still interested ten years ago. Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima came out in 2006 and did alright. Valkyrie and Inglourious Bastereds were a bit silly, but they fared pretty well in 2008 and 2009 respectively. We had The Pacific in 2010, which did well. Not as well as Band of Brothers, though, so perhaps that's when we all finally got fed up of World War II. Pity the producers of the 23 World War II films currently listed on Wikipedia as being underway worldwide, they're on a hiding to nothing.

Watched a few films on TV over the last few nights-

The Losers. Never even heard of it before but sat down to watch it and can;t say I was disappointed really. A bit formulaic, but a pretty solid action movie. 7.5/10

The Bourne Supremacy. Seen it before and think it is really, really good. Best of the Bourne films imo. 9/10

Pitch Black- Again, I have seen it before. another very good film for what it is. Not quite as good as I remember it the first time though. 8/10

None of these films are going to win any awards, but they were all good fun.

WW1 and 2 changed the face of the planet. Fury starring Brad Pitt is on the horizon. Recent war movies based around current wars lack any real sentiment as not enough time has passed to build up that deep narrative. WW2 movies in my humble opinion are films about honour, sacrifice and duty. Enemy at the gates, was superb, seeing the Russian front, and the carnage that it was. Saving Ryan opening scene is historic in its depiction.

Ww2 movies have a continued awe because the type of Warfare was up close and tactile and the sheer weight of bodies involved puts anything else into the shade. They were and will be epic in scale and great source material.Modern wars are little more than Police actions in comparison. I also find modern movies based on current conflicts all about the 'tech' and not about the men. Then when it is about the men, they end up all whiney like in Jarhead. Generation kill is another depiction of whiney opinionated soldiers .

Modern conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq are not global game changers. Look at the Hurt locker, the Green zone ...good movies but very forgettable . None will forget Saving Private Ryan.

When ww3 is done and dusted, then we can have serious source material again.:)

Agree with most you said, however i'd say Black Hawk Down is the exception here when talking of modern war movies.

Seen a few recently

Boyhood 9.5/10

Absolutely superb, only a 0.5 off because the mum irked me a little. Everyone else was brilliant, had superb flow and I was never bored.

Inbetweeners 2 7/10

Technically atrocious, but I did laugh a lot, even though I went in not thinking I would!!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 9/10

Jim Carry was superb, I was hooked from the get go. I love melancholy films, and I had to listen to some radiohead after to keep myself in the mood that the film leaves you!

Godzilla 4/10.

About the only positive thing I could take from this film were the special effects, and even they weren't great. I was not expecting a masterpiece, I don't mind plot holes in my big budget action blockbusters, I was hoping for a thoroughly enjoyable ride like Pacific Rim... this just dragged. Would not watch again.
