What film did you watch last night?

The Martian - 9/10

Only part I didn't like was how he survived the storm at the start after being hit by a huge rock

He wasn't hit by a rock, he was hit by an aerial from their communications array.

(Not spoilering as its like 3 minutes into either the book or the film)

Star Wars: the Force Awakens

10/10

Can I ask you a question that /isn't/ about TFA, but is about your 10/10 rating?

Does 10/10 mean you couldn't have enjoyed it more, or does it mean the film is perfect, and couldn't have been better? Does it mean both? Or does it mean something else?

I'm only asking because I don't think I've ever rated any film 10/10.

It means it was among the most enjoyable films I've ever seen. 10/10 isn't perfection but it is a very good film. I don't think reserving 10/10 for out-and-out perfection makes sense. Realistically I rate good films from 7/10-10/10, while watchable but badly flawed films get 5/10 or 6/10 and anything that gets 4/10 is drekk.

It is, of course, a very personal grade rather than an attempt to judge the objective merits of the film.

Do we need to add a rule to the OP about wether this threads ratings are rounded up, rounded down, or absolute numbers only :p

Actually joking aside, what these numbers mean to different people is actually an interesting discussion. Well, it's interesting to me anyhow :p

For example, many people would rate an "average" film as a 7/10. And if you rate something as 5/10, many people will see it as a negative review.

Yet 3/5 stars is roughly 5/10. So it's interesting how the numbers have different interpretations.

Or maybe I'm just really, really dull :p

I'm with you on the 10/10 thing. To me that means absolutely nothing wrong and its perfect, which nothing ever has been to me.

But others have a different scale and may rank all their favorite films 10/10. But its not the end of the world. I think we can all be relaxed about it and accept that 8's, 9's and 10's means "Pretty dam good" and 1's, 2's and 3's means "Pretty dam bad".

:(
I hope not, looking forward to watching that.
Is it because it's more a documentary film, rather than a film film.

The characters are awful...They are fleecing Tourists 60,000 dollars to climb Everest.

They have no respect for the Mountain really and have normalised the climbing experience. They have cheapened it and are blinded by its true power through greed.

I didn't care if they lived or died tbh...

Some of the set design is woeful...and the acting in parts is just dire....

Not being at work, I get to watch films.

Both Ant Man and Battleship have surprised me. Battleship is weird one, enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons according to the folks over at imdb but hey.

Ant Man works because it's got that Disney dust sprinkled all over it, little laughs, likeable characters, and a blow up Thomas the tank engine... chain yanked yet again. That said it's one of the better marvel films.

I enjoyed Ant Man a lot...all the things you say make sense. It new what it was and got on with it.:)

Not sure what the first two have to do with the film, that is what Everest climb is. It's meant to be heavily based on two real climbs, not an out and out film.

If we don't connect with the characters then very little Drama is created.

If we don't care there is no point...

Film regardless of genre is all about Audience responce...If the audience is indifferent a film is nothing more than watching Paint dry.

Don't agree at all, especially for a docu film, you want them to change reality. So it's not 60k?

Everest is not a documentary. It's a dramatisation of real life events.

I agree that the characters were not compelling. Their motivations for climbing the mountain literally amounted to "because it's there" and it was just all so dude bro about it that it was really hard to care why they were there, or to feel any sympathy for them when it all went horribly wrong.
