What film did you watch last night?

Don't agree at all, especially for a docu film, you want them to change reality. So it's not 60k?

No

Thats not what I'm saying...But a Film as to connect in some way...

When the credits ran..I sat there and just said AND?

“Everest is not real climbing. It’s rich people climbing. It’s a trophy on the wall, and they’re done,” he says. “When I say I wish I’d never gone, I really mean that.”

Everest is not a documentary. It's a dramatisation of real life events.

I agree that the characters were not compelling. Their motivations for climbing the mountain literally amounted to "because it's there" and it was just all so dude bro about it that it was really hard to care why they were there, or to feel any sympathy for them when it all went horribly wrong.

Ghastly people...Or depicted as such.

I felt more like "serves them right" more than anything else...

Breaking the Waves - another odd one from Lars von Trier, this was set in a very religious isolated Scottish village where a newly wedded immature (or at least simple) girl's attempts to get her husband well go from bad to worse. Emily Watson was fantastic in this but was so clearly disturbed that it felt wrong from the off when the guy married her. 3/5

Tomorrowland, really like it. most seem to hate it.

It bombed at the Box Office...

Guess what?

I really liked it too :)

I watched this a while ago, maybe in it's day and for it's time it would get that, these days it felt pretty dated to me.

Totally agree. Its not aged well....My students Gasp when they see the wires at the end....They can't compute :p

On the whole though they do seem to like its storytelling...And oif course the queen sound track :D

I enjoyed most of Tomorrowland, but it gets a bit silly at the end.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 7/10
Too much deus ex machina and comedic moments about it and the plot lacked a bit of depth, but there were some scenes that cracking and both the young leads are very good.

Too much deus ex machina...

I'm not sure what you thought was deus ex about all I can think of is
when R2 has the rest of the map at the end
, the rest of it seemed contrived but foreshadowed
e.g. we see the two guys at Maz's calling in the Resistance and the First Order and then the Resistance show up just in time to rescue Han and co., or we see Finn helping load the explosives they then use to explode the Thermal Oscillator

...and comedic moments about it...

I liked the comic touches, I thought they were well timed and laid on at about the right level but, of course, that's always going to be very much a matter of taste.

I love it how some people in here actually believe that they are the authority on movie reviews :D top class delivery. Thank you.

Vanilla Sky - 7/10

Gets progressively stranger from a slow first hour or so (it's a long film). The ending was less convincing than the build-up, but a solid film overall.

Deduct at least a point if you don't like Tom Cruise, because he's the character around which the who film revolves ;)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 6.5/10.

Reviews probably been done to death but thought I'd post my 3 positives/negatives in spoiler tag for those that haven't seen it yet.

Positives:
1) Visually fantastic. Really gave you a scale of the ships, brilliant flight sequences and even some visually stunning worlds. A feast for the eyes.
2) Generally good actors. I thought particularly the Finn storyline was good and I warmed to the actor immediately. One could say Disney was playing the ‘politically correct card’ but certainly it didn't seem forced (pun intended).
3) The Score: John Williams + Star Wars = match made in… space. The sound just felt so familiar yet new at the same time. Genius.

Negatives:
1) Rylo Ken: by far and away the biggest let down to me. Acted well but basically nothing more than a petulant child (clearly what they were going for). Not sure if they were trying to give us a new Vader but they failed if that was the case. Only thing I can think of is his daddy issues will now drive him to be more ruthless in episode VIII.
2) Starkiller base: will these evil groups never learn to put a bit better security around the weakest part of their big killer weapons? They had two relatively recent occasions to learn from, let’s be fair! This part of the storyline was hugely obvious and ended up being nothing more than a subplot in my eyes when it was clearly the main event/storyline.
3) Overall it was exceptionally predictable: the only surprise (to me) was that Poe Dameron turned up alive and well later on. I predicted quite quickly that we wouldn’t see Hamill until the end (clearly he was in it at some point), Solo would die by the hand of Rylo Ken, Rey would have a lightsabre battle, none of the other protagonists would die.

I’m still trying to decide about the Rey character - Jury out on my opinion of her. She looks the part but far far far to many things that were glossed over such as how she (basically) wiped the floor with a reasonably well trained Rylo Ken. Writers could have been explained ability to use force so quickly by some unexplained ‘abilities’ during her youth which led to the point we saw in the film.

Star Trek [2009] - 8/10

Caught a few minutes of this on Sky a few days ago so gave it a proper watch again last night. I know some have given this some flack on here but I really do like this film, a lot. The opening sequence on a good audio/visual setup is just brilliant.

I appreciate the new Star Wars film isn't a reboot but directly comparing these films (if that's possible) I prefer what JJ did with Star Trek. Yes both had big plot holes i.e. transwarp beaming and points listed in spoiler tag above; maybe it was casting or maybe it's that I grew up with Star Trek but IMO this film reminds me of the feeling I had when I first watched the original cast films (particularly II and VI).

Star Trek 2009 is definitely something for fans new and old to enjoy. Into the Darkness is also a very good film IMO but let's hope these continue on but perhaps move away from original timeline Spock now that Nimoy (RIP) has passed away.
