What film did you watch last night?

Ghost in the Shell 5/10

I think I have a very uncertain relationship with the whole GitS franchise. After seeing the film I feel it kind of amplifies what I feel about the whole thing, anime inclusive although to a lesser extent as it's generally a better experience - Ghost in the Shell tries to be about the bigger picture of the human condition and what it means, but for one reason or another it never quite gets there. The film, despite trying to shoehorn in the anime checklist, doesn't feel very interesting and doesn't really explain it's world very well. I stuck through it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they had 2 hours of time to waste.

Whilst I pretty much agree with everything you've written there, surely it's worth an extra point for Scarlett Johansson in a skin tight outfit though :p

I'd go for a 6/10 :)

The Visit.
Totally missed this when it came out which is odd as I do like M Night Shamathingy films.

Started off a little slowly and wasn't really expecting or wanting the found-footage style but when it got going and the oddness started I really liked it.
The scene under the house really did make me grimace (in a good way!)

I felt the finale wasn't the best and had started to lose concentration by then, although the several cans of cider consumed by then may have had an impact, but all in all I thought it was a good film.

Life of pi - I’m not sure if I enjoyed it or not really. It wasn’t terrible and it kept my attention but I can’t imagine I’ll ever want to watch it again

Red Sparrow (2018) - 7/10

A great, committed performance throughout from Lawrence who manages to humanize the character whilst looking stunning in every scene.

The story is a bit predictable and the twists are nothing special, but it never felt as though it dragged – it is long, but it just meanders along, focusing more on the character development of the titular ‘Red Sparrow’ rather than modern day spy craft.

Good use of colours and architecture at times, and the shocking torture and spy school scenes create a good contrast to the glamorous side.

Veronica - 5/10

Run of the mill horror film that falls short of being remotely scary. This has 100% on Rotten Tomato's... which I can only assume has been paid for by Netflix.

Well acted, but too slow and cliched.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Middle America black comedy that straddled a range of emotions really well without feeling like Oscar bait. 7/10.

The Big Short - I found it disjointed and a waste of talented actors. It tried to go for a Wolf of Wall Street style but failed, plus the regular breaking of the fourth wall was silly. 5/10.

Koyaanisqatsi - Mesmerizing coming together of Godfrey Reggio, Philip Glass and Ron Fricke's skills. 9/10.

Veronica - 6/10

Netflix exclusive horror film. Made by the same guy as the original REC so had high hopes, and to be fair, as modern horrors go, it's not a terrible film. Does a good job at building suspense and doesn't try and over use jump scares. It's in Spanish so you will be reading subtitles for 90 minutes
