What film did you watch last night?

The Matrix
9/10

I watched this with my 11 year old son who hadn't seen it before. As soon as the music started it took me right back to 1999. The CGI is looking quite dated now. But the sound effects and story are superb. I'd forgotten quite how much I enjoy this film. Maybe it reminds me of a time that I was very happy and carefree. Yes 9/10 is a very high rating and it's not going to quite stand up against a truly classic film. But I gave it that rating for the sheer entertainment factor and nostalgia. My son utterly loved it.

"I know kung-fu"

"Dodge this!"

"Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?"

"Guns. Lots of guns."

I must admit I didn't realise it was a 15 until I just checked. But I didn't find anything in it too concerning for him. I guess each child is different and he's very level headed and robust.

Bladerunner 2049 -

Not sure whether it was because I was tired or somthing but it didn't really grab or excite me.
Of course it looked & sounded great but I just felt I was missing something.

Plan to watch it again in a couple of weeks.& score it then

Wonder - (IMDB-8/10)

Tells the incredibly inspiring and heart warming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. I enjoyed this, good family film.

Ladybird

In retrospect, I really enjoyed it. Twas a lovely, quaint and charming coming of age story. The performances are fantastic and the pacing was perfect. Twas nice to see a movie this year that isn't 6000 years long! However, on occasion I did feel that it was a poor imitation of a Noah Baumbach or Wes Anderson script. It's themes are hugely relatable and all the characters are made masterfully empathetic, but I just felt I'd seen it done better and more stylistically before (see 'Squid and The Whale' or 'Moonrise Kingdom', for example).

Still really enjoyed it though.

Pretty much seen all the best picture nominees now bar 'Phantom Thread' which I'll be seeing next week. Can't say any of them have truly grabbed me except 'Call Me By Your Name' and 'Get Out', neither of which have a chance in hell of winning. 'The Florida Project' is still the best movie I've seen and I can't believe it didn't even get a nomination. Scandalous I tell you!!!

Ah yes, the matrix, great film :) It's been copied endlessly since it was released. Says it all for how genre defining it really was.

One of the best films of its type, no doubt about it.

Shame the sequels utterly sucked though :(

I'd give it an 8/10

Well, she's been dating Noah Baumbach since 2011 so that might have something to do with it :) I haven't seen The Squid & The Whale. Is it good?

I actually feel that the more time goes on, the more I've grown to like Lady Bird. Myprediction is that they never go for the real frontrunner to win, whch in this case is Three Billboards. Therefore I think Lady Bird has a good shot. I just watched The Shape of Water this afternoon and thought it was gash. Well-made gash, but boring nonetheless. Not a patch on his other work. 5/10.

A Cure For Wellness - 5/10. Started off well, kept me watching in to the 2nd hour then lost my interest and I pushed on only to witness the most ridiculous ending. I did like the actors in it and the premise but just didn't deliver.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword 6/10. A Guy Ritchie film based in a fantasy realm telling a story. I quite enjoyed it for what it was. Some funny moments and kept me interested until the end.

The Mummy - 3/10. Had already read many times it was pants and didn't fail in that department. Tom Cruise is well short and annoying. Could have been so much better and they've left it open for more films. Please dont.

Love The Matrix, 9/10 from me too. They should have left it at just the one though, sometimes it's best just to leave a movie to the imagination...

Easy 9.5/10

Still remember watching it in the cinema and just thinking WOW!

You don’t get many films that have that effect on you. Great when it happens though.

Lost count how many times I’ve seen it since. It’s just one of them films I can just jump into whether the beginning, middle or end. Never get bored of it!

Excellent sound track as well.

Quality.

Black Panther

MCU knock it out the park again. Visually stunning, really funny but well crafted so it doesn't detract, plenty of great action, and a plot - which while hardly groundbreaking - that held together well and delivered real interest.

I was struck, though, by how much it felt like a black American vision. The movie was very much cast in the light of the American history of slavery rather than any genuinely African take.
