What film did you watch last night?

Game Night

Good, so many twists though, funny in places that shouldn't be but it works. It's like a lighthearted version of Flincher's The Game.

Red Sparrow

It thinks its clever than it really is. It's okay, a little too long, little chemistry between the 2 leads and Joey's Richardson's portrayal of a Russian mum doesn't work. Lawrence's fake Russian accent is kind of pointless but she is good, better than this movie deserves.

The Dark Crystal UHD
Loved this film ever since my mum took me to the local pictures as a nipper.

The transfer is excellent on par with the equally brill Labyrinth. Audio is top notch too seems they have sprinkled some Atmos magic on it.

Well worth another watch if you have not seen it for a while.

Black Panther not bad 6 or 7 put of 10 for me. It only suffers in comparison to the quality of the other MCU films. The plot is good, no major missteps, the cast are good reasonably well acted although I think Boseman was better in Civil War. The Korean fight scene was a bit meh, hard to follow not as crisp as other recent movies have achieved. I didn't have the emotional involvement in this film as some of the better MCU films have produced. Compared to Star Wars and DC this was box office gold, it only suffered compared to the best of the MCU. But when you consider Cap 3, Strange, Guardians 2, Thor Ragnorok and Spidey Homecoming (only one I haven't seen) are all in MCU Phase 3 it's a quality field to be left behind in.

I think I seem to remember watching this at some point as a kid, but not sure.

Both are completely different....in tone, pace, ideology , mise-en-scene , music, cinematography, sound, editing, and messages and values, performance and character.

This is too easy.

In fact apart from the Heist bit....they are two completely different films on every level.

Lol

:D

You can throw the petty insults my way ...that's fine keep going...but base them on facts...Just because you have no argument and don't get Baby Driver, is not my fault.;):p

They are both very different films despite similar subject matter.

But drive is a massively better film ;)

I disagree. I enjoyed both.

Baby Driver is a quality produced film. In fact I would argue the editing and sound design blow chunks all over Drive.

But that then does a disservice to Drive and the lack of any real action sequences as thats kind of the point.

So for me they both stand as quality pieces of cinema.

Baby driver is a pretty loud and in your face film. Not much subtle about it.

I much prefer the atmosphere and pacing of drive.

Just my own preference though. I do tend to lean towards more intelligently crafted films.

Although I will come clean, I haven't actually sat and watched baby driver. I saw a few trailers for it and it just looked like it would give me a headache.

Yep. Both very different, but both very good in their own way. Drive is the more interesting film though, for sure. Baby Driver is very middle-of-the-road with regards to story, set-pieces, audience expectation etc.

I watched Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, last night. Pretty good 7/10. Interesting to watch but sometimes I just wonder what would have happened if somebody got fed up of him on set and just told him he was being a muppet :p

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Not quite as good as the first, but still a decent romp.

Why have Channing featured in marketing when he has maybe 15 minutes of screen time? Also, having Harry on the cover kinda spoiled that 'reveal'. First Elton F-bomb got a big lol from me.

6/10

Despicable Me 3

Snorefest, even 80s nostalgia couldn't save it.

4/10 for the music.

Coco

Much better animated offering! Gorgeous graphics, non-annoying child lead, and even has some feels in the end.

Missus did a great job predicting the twist very early on.

8/10

Daddys Home 2

Erm, no. The first one was by no means great, but this had fewer laughs, and the little girl on the phone made me want to ragequit for some reason, haha. Also, the other girl, from Lucifer, is the least believable child actress of many decades.

4/10

Sometimes I like in your face films depending on mood. Baby driver is a well crafted entertaining film thats interesting as it blurs the lines between diegetic and non diegetic sound.

Not only very cleverly but extremely nuanced.

The opening scene all in one take is Brilliant.

And one of my pets hates...Is people commenting and having opions based on nothing but a trailer without actually seeing the films. So I'm not going to discuss BD with you any further.

I disagree that BD is middle of the road. Its bigger than that. Its a different film. So It shouldn't even be compared to Drive.

BD is a clever well written and produced film with really exceptional set pieces. The opening car sequence is pure cinema and should be celebrated. Sometimes you have to have background film knowledge to look past the facade and actually technically what is going on.

I teach Drive at A level. I know it inside and out. Both are worthy films to deconstruct. One just has to look for different things.

I'm not going to argue that, although personally I feel "pure cinema" is overstating it a bit. I do want to see BD again though, I suspect a single watch is not enough to appreciate a lot of it.

I've worked at one of the big six studios for >4yrs now and have worked in post production before that for around 12 years. I just got back from helping setup in the house of a DOP working on one of our tentpole movies (budget $160m+) and deal with the production office almost daily. Don't make assumptions ;)

Then you should get BD in an instant.
