What film did you watch last night?

Unhinged - DNF/10

Despite Russell Crowe being pretty damn good in this film, albeit in a poorly presented character, this film is utterly crap.
Stopped watching after about 45 minutes. It’s a good concept but just executed awfully.

Unleashed/'Danny the dog' - The story is not Oscar-winning but the fight scenes are spot on. Jet Li and Bob Hoskins film :D

A man raised as a savage fighting beast and with no human knowledge is used by a gangster for extortion purposes. An accident lands him in the care of a blind pianist who changes his life with music.

How could you not watch this

Sound of metal. 7/10

Erm a film of nothing. After the first 15 mins the entire film was set and it plays out exactly as you predicted.
Its fine but. Yeah.

Palm Springs 7/10

I love time loop films, this one started really well but I felt it kind of lost it's way. Some funny moments though and a good cast.
tbh, I thought the ending (or how I interpreted it) to be a decent change from the norm.

It's been a good while since I saw the film, but I seem to remember leaving it thinking:
usual groundhog day films the protagonists leave the loop, and that's it, the loop is forgotten. but here it shows multiple people (3 that we know about) all in the loop, joining it at different times, so while Andy Samberg and the girl leave the loop, the old dude (roy?) is still in it. I don't think we know how Andy Samberg joined the loop originally, so I'm assuming it's set up to imply Roy gets Andy into the loop, in revenge for Andy getting him into it. thus restarting the entire loop. (but then this doesn't explain how Roy gets to leave it, only his joining, over and over - causing a build up of Roys in the universe...)

Love and Monsters (2020) - 8/10

A light hearted take on the apocalypse with giant insects where a loveable loser goes on a journey for love.

Quirky and silly with a few weird moments but it’s mostly run of the mill with its plot and characters.

Good special effects and acting, the emotional scenes make it drag a bit in the middle and the ending feels a bit rushed, but other than that, it’s good harmless fun.

In the Shadow of the Moon (2019) - 5/10

Interesting set up, but bland in execution. As police thrillers go its ok but the mystery and what it does with it is pretty dull.

The chase scenes are stylish and the acting is good, but the drama and the human impact of the events (the race riots, losing loved ones, obsession) isn’t great.

Street Kings - 7½ / 10

Keanue Reeves as the 'do anything to get results' kinda cop gets mixed up with a load of bent cops... good action, good story, well filmed. Recommended.

As others mentioned Foxcatcher has superb performances, Steve Carrell is truly amazing in it. The documentary Team Foxcatcher about the whole case on Netflix is even better than the movie, if anything Steve Carell underplayed how creepy Du Pont was.

Mark Schultz is pretty messed up from it even recently having to have all his teeth replaced.

I saw that terrible new Netflix Bruce Willis sci fi movie that even got different names for the UK and USA, absolutely terrible low budget. Bruce just looking bored and lazy the whole time.

The most realistic line of all was when Bruce told a younger actor to "get the **** out of my chair" which he probably would say on set for real going by what Kevin Smith has had to say about him.

Not last night, but in the last few days :p

Godzilla vs Kong - 4/10 - just meh

Mortal Kombat - 6/10 - maybe because I was expecting it to be really bad, but was better than I thought

Nobody - 8/10 - was a cool movie

Promising Young Woman - 7/10 - good movie to watch in the afternoon

eh

before andy and the girl leave the loop, she leaves a message on roys phone saying how they are going to get out - he gets the message and drives over, arriving after they have left the loop, he meets "default" andy at the wedding who doesnt recognise roy - thats because this is an andy who hasnt experienced the resets every day, and so has never met Roy before (just like everyone else in the loop who isn't experiencing the resets) - so roy knows they made it out, implying that he can go do the same thing to get out as well

Stowaway.

Utter, utter bobbins. A plot with enough large holes you could drive a fleet of London buses through.

The acting was probably okay, but I was too busy going “How the **** did that happen?” and “Even Ryan Air space flights would have a spare X...” to notice.

Just recently finished watching the Marvel films in the Spaghetti order; which follows the logic that if a post-credit scene in a Marvel movie alludes to another film, you should watch that film next.

Iron Man 2 (2010)
Thor (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
The Avengers (2012)
Iron Man 3 (2013)
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Ant-Man (2015)
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Captain Marvel (2019)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Part of my reason was that I finally took the plunge and upgraded my old LG Plasma to an LG OLED, which seemed a perfect excuse for immersing myself in some 4K, HDR and Atmos. ;)

The continuity in parts is very well done and easily missed when watched years apart. Overall I'd give it a 9/10.

Mortal Kombat - 5/10 - Adequate film, effects are OK, story is weak as gnats pee (understandable considering the source) but it had some good nod-backs to the game. Kano's various Aussie insults were the highlight for me but it's not the sort of film I'll be rewatching any time soon TBF. However if the film had been as good overall as the opening scene was (the one on Youtube) then the film would've been far far better than what we ended up with.

You've pretty much said exactly what I was coming on here to post, Mortal Kombat doesn't really move on from the cheese of the 90's version apart from improved fight scenes and effects.

Kano was a standout, after watching Josh Lawson for years as Doug in House of Lies, this was such a nice surprise.

Mortal Kombat

Better than I expected... some good bits in there that I sorta remembered from the game (never owned one as I didn't have consoles growing up but had still played it a bit at mate's houses), glad to see an obligatory "get over here!" in there... I always like seeing Hiroyuki Sanada in stuff, the Kano guy was good too (though not a character I remember)... main complaint was the character they seemed to be setting up as the main dude felt fairly useless compared to the others...

I'd not watch it again, but I'd watch a sequel.

Mortal Kombat - It was fine. Not great, not crap. Better than I thought it would be. 5/10

Nobody - Very much enjoyed this one. Bob Odenkirk was great, not what you'd expect from him. The soundtrack was also great. 9/10

Outside the Wire (2021) - 4 / 10

A slightly futuristic take on modern warfare with robots fighting alongside soldiers.

The special effects and action scenes are good, but the story’s poor with awful dialogue at times.

The lead characters are interesting enough and show some development, which is good as most of the supporting cast are just filler, but it’s not very realistic and gets more silly and nonsensical as it goes along.

I probably overthought it, but
really got the impression roy was going to bring andy back into the loop before escaping it himself. As you say, he sees "original" andy who doesn't know him in the mid-credits scene, so he knows the escape plan works. I know he was a lot calmer with andy than earlier in the film, but kinda felt that in 1 of the loops before escaping he would get drunk and drag andy back, thus completing the circle why andy started the looping himself.

cool idea but I looked at a load of forum / reddit posts after watching it and you are "unique" in your theory :D

Requiem For a Dream (2000)

It's hard to say that I enjoyed this film since when the story is of four people hitting rock bottom as a result of drug abuse.

I will say it definitely worth watching and has some really original visuals that really help convey the character's emotions.

Great work from all of the cast, particular Ellen Burstyn.

Just like the original Trainspotting, this is a film young teenagers should watch to see the perils of taking drugs.

Excellent 9/10
