What film did you watch last night?

The Father : 8.5/10

What an absolutely fantastic film and performance by Hopkins, his portrayal of someone with dementia was superb. I thought it was going to be quite a depressing film but it wasn't at all and they way they presented the story using methods to induce confusion in the audience was genius as it really connected you with Hopkins plight.

Mad Max and Bohemian Rhapsody are 2 films i would have walked out of were it not for my partner.

Wut? Out of all the crap movies in the world, i think you are in the minority here! MM, good, but not great, BR - amazing!

I've never walked out of a movie, but then i only go the cinema when it is a movie i know i want to see.

You Were Never Really Here. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5742374/

Relatively short but probably wouldn't want to be too much longer anyway.

To the point... and a good watch.

That ending scene in the diner...

Good cast. Always interesting to see the same actor play a different role.

Not quite the ending I imagined but it worked out well, I think. Also, I was a little surprised that his girlfriend just disappeared from the movie. An unusual outcome in general where cinema is concerned, but quite realistic nonetheless.

Hereditary - 6.5/10

Overall quite enjoyed it, had an old school horror vibe about it, so more about the build up and keeping you on edge than out and out scares. But the ending let it down for me, just didn't quite gel with the rest of the film and left it feeling a little unsatisfactory

Bad Samaritan. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3203528/

Refreshing to see David Tennant playing an evil character, and he pulls off the accent and overall performance very well indeed.

A little bit predictable in places but not so in others.

Worth checking out.

American Hustle. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1800241/

Some good cast members in this one though Bale being in it was the main draw for me. Overall, a solid movie with some amusing moments thrown in. It did drag a little in the middle for me but after a break from the film, I came back to it and enjoyed the second half.

Spy 8/10

Pretty good fun. Melissa McCarthy is excellent and looks a bit like Dawn French. Some very funny and not so funny dialogue and gags, and great action scenes. It's a Bond spoof and reminded me a little of Kingman.

The Dead Don't Die (2019) - 6/10

Peculiar and odd but pretty slow and sort of funny, but not.

It captures the atmosphere of small town America perfectly, from the characters personalities and attitudes to their semi-realistic approach to dealing with the abnormal.

I liked the strong sense of foreboding, the good acting and how everything was a bit strange, but I didn’t like the 4th wall breaking.

There was also too much deadpan humour, the ending was a bit flat and there were too many pointless characters in it.

Saint Maud.

While probably having to do it to show the context of what she believed in her head, i lost the fixation a little when the cgi stepped in half way through the film. Dropped in the hot seat with no idea what this was this morning with somebody showing it in Big Screen VR. Not something i would have watched through choice, but turned out worth it.

Interesting central character though, the location and depiction of her existence endeared me to her, along with the conflict of redemption when you see in graphic detail why she turned away from that life.

The only thing that got me was some of the narration at the start of the film, very self aware and assured in realism of the situation and of others, certainly not of the character or the film going forward.

Good watch if you want to try and figure that out.

Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017) - 5/10

It has a cracking start with some really tense moments and plenty of horror, even if it’s not that scary, but after that, it just didn’t feel like RE at all.

Although the characters looked good, the fast fight scenes were entertaining and the story rolled out at a good pace, it was all a bit boring.

The characters were dull or underused, the later fights had too much slow motion and posturing and the ending didn’t suit RE at all.

Army of the Dead - absolute tosh.

It starts out interestingly, the opening credits are done in a kinda stylised comical way and so it seemed promising there... but the rest of it is just so bad (but not in a way that makes it good again)... characters saying they can't do a thing (when blatantly they could), tired cliches, the entire thing makes no sense either once you get a bit more info... the effects are the only non-terrible bit.

The one interesting thing I learned after seeing it, was that one actor got caught in scandal so was digitally erased and replaced by someone else... I guess I'd dismissed any time people weren't looking at each other as being just the general jank of it, but I kinda wished I'd known before so I could at least have had some fun spotting out the bits.

The Matrix! - 9/10.

Was looking through my collection and and thought why not? I'm only an hour or so into it, the part where Neo takes the red pill and starts his training. I didn't realise Agent Smith was in it so little!

But on amazing movie and one of my all time favourites.

I watched this last night, well about an hour of it until I got fed up.

Your first sentence nails it for me.

I expected it to be much better given some of the solid cast members.
